Subnautica 2 is being developed with Unreal Engine 5, adopting a Game as a Service model. Players will explore an "oceanic world in stunning stylized graphics.".

The report indicates that the game will feature a single-player mode, or players can team up with friends for a 4-player co-op session to "uncover the mysteries on an entirely new alien planet."

Subnautica 2 is scheduled for release in 2024. Currently, details are scarce, with no screenshots or gameplay footage available yet. Consequently, as you can see, we're relying on screenshots from the first Subnautica for this report.

We should hopefully learn more soon, as we expect an official announcement with more details will be forthcoming.

Since its launch in 2015, the original Subnautica has maintained a robust community, reaching a peak concurrent player base of 51,156 on Steam. Over the years, its popularity has grown, leading to the release of a new chapter in the franchise, Subnautica: Below Zero. This installment acts more as a DLC or expansion than a direct sequel.

Financial Report

Per the earnings results;

Multiplayer sequel to the original IP pursuing fandom snowballing

*Explore an oceanic world in stunning stylized graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5

*Single or 1-4 player co-op to uncover the mysteries on an entirely new alien planet

*Game-as-a-Service model with enhanced replayability

I'm holding off on judgment until I see it. But it would be devastating if this turned out to be a MTX hell...

I wasn't really feeling Below Zero and I'm definitely not feeling this

They're turning it into a GAAS? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

At least it will still have single player, not interested in multiplayer, kinda takes away the feeling of being isolated and alone on an alien world and having to survive for yourself

Subnautica is one of my favourite games in the last ten years.
Hopefully the gaas approach doesn't distract from it's core concepts, because that would be really unfortunate.

The multiplayer is a good thing.
I can finally built bases together with my niece.
And she always liked the game, but is too scared to dive deeper alone and because of that never played it far.

Doubtful that it's coming out this year, considering how long it took them with the other games and how they released it (early access first) and isn't the model figure game still in early access?

really hard to know what anyone means by GaaS nowadays. That article saying 95% of studios were doing it only to be clarified that they meant all games with updates counted as GaaS... lol

As long as it's not online only and gaas only means it'll get a ton of more content sure why not. It's when a gaas game is focused around no offline support along with pushing micro transactions there is a problem.
A regular game getting a lot of content over several years is not a bad thing.

Sounds great if you like multiplayer, which I do. A lot of potential here.

I saw that. But they're still building the world around multiple players with a GaaS philosophy. Hard to see that not impacting single player.

Yeah, I 100% did expect them to add co-op and wasn't expecting to be concerned about the inevitable announcement. But this is actually making me worry that the game will be designed more like, well, every other game in this genre. Subnautica is awesome because of how focused it is on the single player experience and progression. Making it more like every other game in the genre would be saddening, especially because I've tried so many of them hoping for 'another Subnautica'.

The biggest worry would be a crafting economy balanced around daily tasks and limited events. Meaning you're struggling to get certain components unless you're constantly engaging with the GAAS busywork treadmill, or spending real money to skip it.

Grounded has co-op and an amazing handcrafted world that's a joy to explore alone, or with others. It's possible to have both.

Coop is awesome and potentially game selling on its own; but yeah GAAS could ruin this whole thing.

Hope the Singple Player experience holds up too.

Could be good, even with GaaS. If they push towards a model like Deep Rock Galatic's GaaS, I see no issue. I don't think these devs are in it for the quick buck

I'm very worried about the single player portion of the game and always online and etc.. Will wait to pick this up after 6 months.

One of the things that made Subnautica great for me is how alone you felt. Multiplayer does not sound like it fits.

Some are really whining for the sake of whining. GaaS doesn't mean anything specifically, especially in a stakeholder-focused report. If you don't like the multiplayer focus though, that's another issue altogether.

I hope they'll make the movement and the swimming even better. A swimming/survival co-op game sounds good.

If the GAAS element is an ever-expanding map, I'm cool with that.

Or maybe GAAS like Monster Hunter where new stuff just appears every X period of time.

I mean as long as they fix base building.

Base building being terrible in both games killed the experience for me.

There's actually real potential here for a GaaS model, assuming it's tastefully done.

It is hard to pass judgement on this until we know exactly WHAT the GaaS elements are.

Hopefully it doesn't need to be always online.

So does this mean you base will 'break down' over time and you need to keep up the farming grind in order to not have your base go away?

And/or the story will be doled out piecemeal to keep you on the grind?

Seems....like a terrible fit - I also have no idea on how you'd monetize things, aside from cosmetic options (which seem like it wouldn't really be a huge source of revenue?)

I wonder how many of the people who made Natural Selection 20 years ago are still at Unknown Worlds.

Gonna wait to see what they mean by gaas in the context of this game as I loved the first two. Just having another Subnautica is already great news for me, hopefully they don't fuck it up.

Like I said above thread, this seems like a decent fit for the Monster Hunter model. Release stuff for free to constantly expand the game but charge for smaller things to support long term development.
