I feel like I've heard a variant of this sentiment before every major release from Bethesda.

rewrote

ctrl+c ctrl+v into Visual Studio

I really hope this is true and it's actually up to proper AAA standards

I'm going to stay grounded and keep my expectations in check, so I'll only be expecting slightly better animation than TLOU2 now.

That means nothing regarding the animation quality. It means they changed the way game handles transitions and telling each object which animation to play at any moment depending on its state.

You should see how gratuitously I spin small projects I've worked on in my linkedin lol.

Lol. So he's been spending all this time working on an animation system to repalce Havok (which Microsoft owns).

I get the pessimism but it's not like we are learning this from a calculated PR piece or from Todd. This is something lifted off a resume. Sure, always question, but this makes me more hopeful than any official statement from Bethesda.

Todd Howard mentioned this in an interview back before 76 came out. Sounds like they've done other engine upgrades too based on recent interviews, very curious to see how big. I feel like after 76 they kinda know they're gonna have to make some major changes

Man oh man, this is gonna be a massive killer app for Microsoft.

Elder Scrolls and Fallout are obviously massive exclusives not to mention Doom, Wolfenstein, Dishonored, Prey etc. but Starfield feels like it will be one of the defining games of this upcoming generation.

And we still know so little about it.

As much as we joke and take stabs at Bethesda, most of us would like nothing but a new game from them that stands should to shoulder with the rest of the AAA industry in terms of production value.
Ah, yes, because implying that Bethesda lies about upgrading their engine with every release obviously comes from a place of love.

Not sure about Starfield but I think Elder Scrolls 6 will turn some heads. It has to when it releases almost 15 years after the last game. They take their time and I think (hope?!) it will be worth it.

Have they been working on this game since 2015?

They better; they're like 15 years behind on that department. Probably the worst animations in the AAA industry (with Mortal Kombat).

They may not lie about it but it's almost always underwhelming results.
Oblivion's engine was a big step up from Morrowind's, and Skyrim's engine was a big step up from Oblivion's. There's no lie there. Yes Fallouts' engine upgrades were very small, but Bethesda tends to put a lot of work into TES (their own IP) while the Fallout games get only minor improvements. Starfield, as an IP they created, is very likely to get significant upgrades.
