I realize it's kind of old news by now, but I couldn't find a thread about it, so I thought why not make one.

Sony Interactive Entertainment's free-to-use game engine, PhyreEngine, appears to be compatible with Nintendo Switch.

PhyreEngine has been used to power many games in recent years, including but not limited to Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, OlliOlli 2, Gunslugs, and Dragon Quest Builders. PhyreEngine is supported on all recent Sony PlayStation hardware, as well as Xbox One, iOS, and Android.

The revelation of PhyreEngine's support on Nintendo Switch came from the licensing document of the free Dragon Quest Builders demo, which was developed by using PhyreEngine.

All in all this is pretty great, since some games that were made on this engine now have a better chance coming to Switch.

Makes sense, given that Dragon Quest Builders is developed on it. Probably got it out just in time for that release.

EDIT: Should've read the rest of the release, lol.

Long time ago the DS received a Viva Piñata game and almost received a Halo one because Microsoft didn't considered portables an enemy to the 360.

So ... does Sony still considers Nintendo not competing the same race?

Probably best optimized for Playstation.
Doubt that otherwise there would be no reason for most Sony first party studios to use their own engine or even Unreal Engine 4

Phyreengine was first made when PS3 was hard to develop for so they made this multi platform engine to make it easier and they just increased their number of compatibility platforms

Thats cool, but is there some kind of catch?
I just find it weird devs using a sony engine for non-sony platforms, when its free too.

The reason on why Phyreengine is multiplatform.

https://www.engadget.com/amp/2008/02/21/gdc08-phyreengine-sonys-new-free-cross-platform-engine/

But why make it easier to make games on a competing console? Well, it's undeniable that developers are increasingly focused on multiplatform development. It's been rather commonplace for developers to neglect PS3 with inferior and oftentimes delayed versions of multiplatform games. With PhyreEngine, Sony is making a much more attractive plea: make games on PS3 first, guaranteeing high quality games that will not only match their 360 counterparts, but in many cases can exceed them. Sony's message is clear: start games on the PS3, and they will be better for both PS3 and 360 owners. It appears to us that PhyreEngine is a crucial part of that plan.

If the switch was handheld only maybe (but most likely not). But the switch also competes for the big screen of the living room so not a chance.

Sony cant be that arrogant, they even consider entertainment as rival, anything that can prevent people from playing PS is a competition

I mean, it says right in the OP that the engine is compatible with XB1.

Most of falcoms recent 3d games have been made with PhyreEngine. Also a alot of recent NIS games use it as well.

Which makes sense why were seeing Switch ports for stuff like Ys VIII.

I literally had no idea you could use Phyre Engine on anything other than PlayStation and this is coming from someone who has used Phyre Engine lmao.

Sony working with Nintendo in the same sentence feels weird. That aside, that's some awesome news, hope more devs jumps in on Switch's ecosystem.

Thanks for the info. I guess it just started as a rumor then.

I think it was put on wikipedia without sources and spread from there. I also thought it had run on phyre

Thats possible. I've thought for years that it was based on Phyre Engine :)

Probably because of the extended version of this GDC 09 video that showed a character walking around swinging a sword looking very DeS like
