This news might resonate more with the film crowd. For folks who don't know the guy, Shane Caruth directed the time travel movie Primer, along with the trippy drama film Upstream Color. Both were well received, and he was held up in the film community as an indie darling for a long time. He most definitely inspired a lot of filmmakers in the 2000s and early 2010s. In recent years, though, he's distanced himself from movies after failing to get his third movie off the ground and has been increasingly antisocial and bitter. This all came to a head when he had a falling out with his former girlfriend Amy Seimetz, and she subsequently filed a restraining order against him after their breakup. She's a prolific actor and director in her own right -- She Dies Tomorrow was her most recent film. Caruth, out of spite, shared details and documents about their relationship during the release of Seimetz's film, which took away a lot of attention from it.
This particular arrest was with another girlfriend he met later. His behavior over the last decade got increasingly more toxic. I feel for these victims, and I hope they'll be able to recover and get some closure. But it's also so disappointing to see such a talented creative waste himself and be so shitty for no reason. He needed to get help a long time ago.
