The SoC is top tier and will be expensive, iirc Switch SoC was $50 originally and Nintendo allegedly got a good deal for it. But this one will likely be more expensive.

That said, i think the determining factor of its price isn't that it can run the Matrix demo but probably other parts to the device like the type/speed/amount of ram used (we have a leak from a reliable source saying it is 12GB) but unknown if it is LPDDR5 or 5X , nor do we have any insights into the type of storage used and amount. 128GB seems like the floor here given game sizes and the 3rd party interest shown so far (Switch launched with 32GB )

Those variable amounts plus Nintendo's willingness to eat a loss on the launch units will determine final pricing.

Yeah, I'm expecting 12gb LPDDR5 and 256gb UFS storage. Everything seems to be lining up for a powerful hybrid console so it's hard to see where Nintendo could save significantly on beside shipping cost due to smaller size. There's no way Nintendo can eat a loss comparable to Sony and Microsoft either. There's also the precedent of the Switch costing as much a PS4 back when it was released if I remembered correctly

It was nearly double the price of its predecessor (the 3DS, after its price cut because it was a flop at $250) and more expensive than Nintendo's competitor's device (Vita) which flopped potentially due to being too expensive.

Nowadays you're right as it is cheaper than its only relevant competitor, the Steam Deck, which has not had Switch-level success. Of course I'm cherrypicking by ignoring ultra-niche enthusiast devices like the Aya Neo.

The hybrid concept puts the Switch in an interesting spot that I think is often overlooked. The Switch is also the successor to the Wii U and competes with the Sony and MS consoles more than it does the Steam Deck.

I think the Switch routinely clears Steam Deck's lifetime sales every like 3 months. None of those high-powered PC handhelds are really competing with the Switch. They are great niche gaming alternatives that were able that benefit a bit from the Switch's success and found themselves in their own market. They do not get any sort of exclusive ports and are meant to play existing libraries.

As for the 3DS to Switch price differences. It's twice the price but roughly 20 to 30x more powerful. It is also the same price as the standard Wii U which launched at $299 (with a Deluxe $350 SKU).

The market decided pretty quickly that $250 wasn't an acceptable price for the 3DS while the Switch was gobbled up by the masses ranging from $200 to $350 and that $200 model isn't even the most successful one.

I usually like to look at the price of Nintendo's competitors to get an idea of how they like to price things. This gen is an interesting one because there is a $299 Xbox and the PS5 sits at a $399 entry price. I can only assume that we will get a Series S-like console next gen as well. So I lean towards $350-400. It's still $100-150 less than the most expensive SKUs of the current-gen consoles.

When the hell is the Switch going to get a price drop then? It better be significant too. Like -$100-150 honestly at this point.

$450 for an LCD screen just ain't gonna cut it for me. I''ll wait for the inevitable OLED revision.

Assuming there's any credence to this rumor, no OLED hurts a bit, but I'm sure it'll come later (for $500...). All I care about right now tbh is BC and what, if any, performance benefits those games will see (whether it's via patches or otherwise).

If Nintendo was like Sony and Microsoft I would think this too but they tend to wanna make a profit off of their hardware instead of taking a hit and then making it up with software sales.
True but not having to include a display, massive battery, separate dock (bigger box = less shipped), grips? (if they keep doing that) should have some savings! If we assume the $399 one is profitable, then removing all of that likely makes a $299 version slightly unprofitable or breaking even at launch.

Now, if the Switch 2 has a big emphasis on AR like some rumors are saying then an affordable "Home" console goes out of the window.

This actually is in-line with my prediction that I made on the thread here when we were placing bets on an announcement month.

I've said announcement video = Mar-May 2024, with a launch in late Summer/Fall 2024.

It makes sense if you look at the Switch release schedule and the rough alignment of annoucement to launch for the Switch.....which is why it could be fake, lol.

-----------------------------------------

I don't take the knowledge of a launch target date as a red flag necessarily. Its a target which could move. Sept 24 could be relevant because its the last Tuesday of 4th quarter in Japan and 3rd quarter in USA, which could reflect a business launch goal.

Part of me thinks it's more likely that the different SKUs stuff was told in this way: $400 with no cart; $450 with cart.
One is the base model, the other one is the base model with Super Mario. 🤭

Regular console + portable. Dock sold separately. Same performance but targeting different resolutions (no difference if playing portable docked).
Backwards compatible with digital stuff and controllers.

That's my guess.

Wish it was earlier and no OLED is a bit of a bummer.

It's my birthday month though, so I'll be all in.

I only ended up buying two games physically for Switch, so I'm in for a cheaper digital only option.

I suspect that will be the case for many. Portable systems and fully digital libraries go well together.

Two SKUs will actually be:
Super Nintendo Switch Home: $299
Super Nintendo Switch: $399

Lock it in.
I've been screaming for this. You had the Switch (Home and Handheld), Switch Lite (Only handheld). I've always wanted a Switch home (Home only).

A tiny little box that's maybe overclocked due to no battery constraints.

I'm usually very critical of these leaks/rumors, but this one seems to tie them all together in a very satisfactory way...

I think it makes so much sense especially since one of the biggest selling points seems to be 4K.

I don't feel like I really believe these rumours, but I'll say that $600-650 CAD for a Switch 2 is fucking bonkers. Especially if games become $90 CAD MSRP after the launch. I really hope it's not that expensive because I think that price will cause a lot of people to balk and/or stick with the first Switch.

$449 would work for me. That's not overly expensive and should allow them to add some extra power to this thing. I think they'd definitely need to do a price drop at some point during the gen though.

The biggest news is from that Famiboards thread actually…
nintendo just ordered and got shipped millions of sound-speakers from vietnam to china from a new producer.
That type of order does not happen for test runs, so it means the production of the next console is slowly under way.
