Sony literally just said they aren't releasing major franchise games this year in an investor call. They aren't going to lie to their investors.

Why even bother with this kind of rumormongering, Jeff? Trying to make people speculate only for it to be another remaster would just be embarrassing.

Major franchise games can be broken down to, no $70 sequels to an established series will be announced or released.

Didn't they specifically say no AAA games from established Sony IPs are coming until March 2025 like... today?

I want another Astro but I dont want to now buy a PSVR to play it. That ship sailed. So I just want a normal PS5 Astro game (which if it's compatible with VR then fine but not if it's exclusive).

Maybe they're just relying on the use of "major" in their investor announcement to indicate that there isn't going to be full on sequel like Ragnarok, or Spider-Man 2, but there will still be something.

Tbf what Grubb said doesn't really contradict.

He said before Asobi's game will be revealed this year and implied it'll come out this year, and that's not a major franchise game but is an established IP.

I understand that Grubb feels he is just reporting on what he is hearing, but I wish he wouldn't say this.

The whole point of Sony's statement of no major established IP's coming in the fiscal year was to temper expectations: for investors and therefore by extension gamers.

And the net effect of Grubb's comments will be to inflate expectations again.
Era - and the internet - cannot handle nuance.

He never said major.

Sony as well as the likes have Nintendo have franchises that are well known and of good quality but wouldn't be considered major.

Sony: We don't have Spider-Man or God of War type games coming this year

Everyone: Sony has no games this year

Ya you should never take what a company says to investors as a catch all, they are hyper specific in their meaning. "No Major franchise titles" doesn't mean no established IP or no first party. They have franchises they consider bigger than others

I find it confusing because his reply was to someone who specified "AAA exclusive games coming this year" which Sony specifically said was NOT happening until Spring 2025

No they didn't. They said "any new major existing franchise titles" and the examples they gave were GoW Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2.

That doesn't exclude new IPs or non-major exclusives.

I wouldn't say the $70 price tag is a cut off, as for example if a Returnal 2 was made, (probably won't), that would be a $70 game that I don't think Sony would consider a major IP. The major franchises are the 10 million selling ones. GoT2 isn't happening this year/ early next year as that would be a major franchise. Something like Astro Bot 2 fits with what Grubb is saying.

Only thing that would be interesting about that to me tbh is that means Horizon mp isn't going to come out this year, as Horizon is 100% a major IP.

I doubt it. None of their studios really seem primed to drop something like that before the end of this year.
Just as an example, like that statement was vague enough and we have had games of that scale being announced and released within 12 months.

Yeah I can see that happening.

If you take the statement as it's written, then, factually, that Sony has lied to their investors in that case, because they are contracted with Major League Baseball to deliver a new MLB the Show game every March so that MLB Advance Media can publish the game on Xbox and Switch.

So yeah, the they are clearly going to release games developed by Sony's own studios that haven't been announced yet before the end of the fiscal year that has "no new games" coming out
