GTA Online will get some big updates this year, but no large content updates for Red Dead Online any more, except a few more missions. And they will continue to highlight existing content.
So basically, Red Dead Online will just continue to exist without any new content and everyone else works on GTA Online or GTA 6. So much wasted potential, but we've all seen this coming over the last two years without anything happening. It's just on life support now.

Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Online Community Update - Rockstar Games

As we look at what’s in store for the Rockstar Games community in the weeks and months ahead, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their unmatched enthusiasm and commitment to all our titles. It’s your support that drives us to keep...

We would also like to thank the Red Dead Online community for their continued support and dedication.

Over the past few years, we have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series — understanding more than ever the need to exceed players' expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be — and as a result, we are in the process of making some changes to how we support Red Dead Online.

Firstly, with both new and experienced players engaging in the wealth of activities already added to this massively rich world including Specialist Roles, story-based cooperative missions, competitive Showdown Modes, and much more, we will continue to showcase these unique additions through Red Dead Online's monthly events as we move forward, so players of all levels can enjoy everything the vast frontier has to offer.

Alongside seasonal special events and experience improvements — plus other changes to enhance and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment — we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years, and we will continue to highlight and share the creative efforts of our Red Dead community at every opportunity via the Newswire and beyond.

I wish RDR2 online had half the success as GTA online, it has the best open world ever realised by a long margin.

If they can go ahead and do a 60FPS patch for current gen consoles, that would be great.

The writing has been on the wall for a long time. I still laugh to myself at those who thought this game was going to be another GTA Online. It was never going to be that from the start

It is what it is. It could've been bigger and better, but ultimately I've moved on and i imagine maintining GTA online and making GTA 6 is an absolutely gargantuan task, combined with rockstars new and improved work culture, it does not surprise me one bit and honestly its probably for the best.

you think GTA 6 will be set in modern day? I think it'd be cool if it was set in the 80s.

This sucks for anyone who was enjoying it, but to be honest from my perspective can't really feel too upset about this, anything to get us GTA VI sooner. It'll be 9 years now in a few months since the last GTA, and realistically it'll prob be 10+ year gap before GTA VI is out given that all indications point to it still being pretty far off.

Just ridiculous stuff.

Just posted about this.

The upcoming updates to GTA Online is huge.

Sell missions in Invite Only lobbies??? About damn time. Now I also can use the Terminal in the Arcade in invite only sessions.

This is such a big quality of life improvement.

I mean, it had like 4 years of strong support? That's a decent run.

It was never going to be the juggernaut GTA Online is.

They never made a flying horse with heat seeking missiles, so I lost all interest. Still haven't lost interest in GTA Online 3 consoles later.

Thank God. Hopefully we can actually see GTA6 before this generation is over with. I think Tom Henderson and Jason Schreier both suggested a 2025 release window? That'd be the dream.

Pour one out for Red Dead Online

Single player rockstar content in this era….
What's that?
It's in abundance in an amazing game released in 2018? I am baffled about people who complain about the lack of quality SP content after playing RDR2. Or they just really would have wanted to be nickel and dimed for DLC?

GTA6 is never coming out just like ASOIAF6 (Winds of Winter) haha. Crazy wait, I hadn't realized it will be 10+ years when we have just a teaser.

Pretty sure the RDO playerbase has been very disappointed in the updates for a couple years now. Compared to GTA Online, RDO is pretty rough content-wise from what I've heard.

I dunno, I kind of wanted to see how GTA 6 would play in a post-2020 world.

It's modern day vice city.

IMO, I think its easier to have it set in modern day just for the cars and other content.

The MkII getting nerfed is also welcome news.
As an owner of one that has never used it for griefing....my K/D is 0.00, lol... I just want it to still be good for some of the contact missions and nightclub promotion jobs. Its really one of the best ways to get around fast in the game.

I play mainly in invite only, only going into public sessions for business sell missions.

Not surprising, though part of me was hoping there would at least be 1 big update to leave the Online portion of the game in a better sunset state. It had a lot of potential, but they were quite aimless with what they wanted the RDR2 Online experience to be. I enjoyed the RDR1 Online component a lot more. At least they've properly addressed that they're done with it now instead of leaving things ambiguous (not that it was well worded)

Such a shame to see all the course-correction that GTAV Online's success has done to Rockstar

Calling it 'strong' support is a far stretch honestly. Compared to all other current games as a service, Red Dead Online was always lackluster. They didn't even bother to add the feature of buying a property.

Overall the online version of rdr2 is a huge miss even comparing it to the original online from rdr. I would have been more than happy if they just had expanded the original one. Oh well. Terrible mismanaged product at the end of the day.

Man I read this as Red Dead Online Baseball and got excited for a second. I'm disappointed at the news. I loved going back into RDR Online from time to time.

Four years of strong support lol?You obviously haven't played the online.
Let me put it this way, everything that we got so far should've been included day one. That's how barebones the game is.

In the mean time, they will continue to go after any modders who try to make their own RDRII Online or role-play servers because reasons.

At this point it won't surprise me if GTA6 is online only, basically an MMO. And that will suck.

Honestly...
They should find a way to have single player and online seamless.
Like if they did 3 characters again then 1 should be a custom character.

Meanwhile Online needs a bit of the RP thats going on out there even if its just simple jobs/classes like
Police
Criminal
Driver
Firefighter
Paramedic

and then expand from there later

Well, it was a good ride. Put hundreds of hours into RDO.

The part where they abandoned porting RDR1 into 2 after doing so much work to seemingly make it happen is the greater disappointment.

Yep, lone wolf play is becoming ever more viable in GTAO. That game has evolved so much since its original launch, and the PS5 port has gotten me to fall all the way back in love with it.

The next online mode will be a metaverse unto itself.

Yeah that's all I want at this point

I love RDr2, but it's combat was serviceable which makes rdr2 online not that great. The grounded realism works well in an immersive single player experience, not in a multiplayer sandbox.

No way in hell they're gonna pass up the chance to comment and absolutely dunk on the last six years of US politics.

They most likely need all hands on deck if only because the SP portion is as ambitious as RDR2. A reminder, they don't launch online and the SP at the same time. They launch the ambitious SP mode, let people sink their teeth into that and get an overall feel for the gameplay, location, etc. and THEN after the playerbase even remotely thinks they had their fill they release the online mode filled with tons of exclusive features, custom characters, new story interactions with the game's cast, etc.

There is no reason to believe otherwise.

All I wanted was Undead Nightmare 2.
Same. It still hurts.

RDO can burn in a fire for what it did to RDR2's DLC plans.

Amen and what makes these games special is being immersed in the world and feeling like a character there. Being a mute weirdo with a bunch of other mute weirdos that never says anything is just so odd.

I think from a business perspective, a modern day setting has more potential. For example, you can sell DLC content like music from contemporary artists as well as retro tracks.

Whereas if it's set in the 80s, you're kind of limited to what you can offer.

I wish they'd just retool it to a offline game instead of just letting it dwindle and then shut down the servers in a few years. Would love for more Red Dead gameplay but I don't enjoy online games. I always felt the single player world felt so dead and lifeless since you could exhaust it's content. RDO seems to have far more varied replayable content.
