I don't think this image quality will be as notable, but the PS5 boost was actually quite notable for more than 10 games.

Monster Hunter World runs at 60FPS locked on PS5 at resolution mode and it didn't have an update for example.

It wasn't the Xbox stuff where they did work on the backend, but it impacted many games nonetheless and in some instances, like MHW, produced better results than Xbox.

that wasn't because of a system-level feature, though, that was just monster hunter running better on PS5 because it had an unlocked framerate in the first place.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is specifically for PS4 games with checkerboarding. No idea why. Just a hunch.

Got the image from someone i know on discord that got the console early from a retailer, not sure yet what it specifically does or how well, but presumably sony made a systemwide upscaling pass for all PS4 games to improve image quality, so this should even affect games like Bloodborne (no it wouldnt unlock it to 60fps).

It wont be to the level of PSSR because its system wide and does not rely on motion vectors, but will be super interesting to see how it works.

Can't your friend try Bloodborne and share some screenshots? You know, for science!

Might that just be the equivalent of SteamOS's FSR that works for non native games (so PS4 games that aren't 4k)?

I wonder if this is nearest neighbor upscaling or something more crazy like Sony's version of Microsoft's Auto SR.

Imo the writing of "some games" / "selected games" indicates it'll be a whitelist sort of situation. Ik Sony's more careful about saying "all games" becasue of legal issues but when it's a global setting they use some other language (ex: "HDR Always On", "Force VRR", etc.)

Can your friend confirm if there is a 'Boost mode' toggle like PS4 Pro had?

Or is it like PS5 where Game Boost is applied automatically?

Also is Astro's Playroom PS5 Pro Enhanced?

It's not new. But why would 120hz lower the VRR floor? Isn't the PS5 48hz on the lower band regardless of whether you use 60hz or 120hz.
You're right - it doesn't lower the hw-floor - I misspoke there. But it does allows LFC to be used, which is lowering the floor in software.
But indeed for that to work system-wide Sony would have to make further system changes.

It would be funny tbh
At this point - I half expect it.

PS4 games will be running via BC and as such the function might not work as intended, so the off switch needs to be there for the. All PS5 games will be running using native hardware.

Thanks.
I studied playstation.com right now.
And every presented PS5pro "boost" has an asterisk that says at the bottom of the page that PS5 games need a patch to profit from said boost.
For now i will take that as the case, until i see some Digital Foundry comparison of unpatched PS5 games.

Yup, VRR too.

I'm just pointing out the 'some games' and 'turn off if having unexpected behavior' text.
Yeah. With the VRR for unsupported games, I leave it on but only had a few games with issues. Mainly GOTG and The Medium.

Hopefully there's only a few with issues but you can set it and forget it for most games.

Well to be fair, out of the sample of one game we have so far, it didnt really seem to do much lol. But maybe we are missing something here. Hopefully DF's review figures out whats the deal here. Maybe its an experimental feature that requires whitelisting the game.

Heck, they might have not even released the whitelisted lineup to production so the feature is not doing anything prior to launch (pure copium on that)

Sony needs to start providing examples instead of leaving it to everyone else to figure out what's different. Like they have to know of some games it works with otherwise there's no point in adding it.
