The story goes that the Taiwanese player brought his Switch to the ATM to withdraw some cash. While he was taking the money, he put his Switch on top of the ATM and forgot about it. His Switch was picked up by a stranger, who send it to the police. Fortunately the Switch has a copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so the police send a message in the game to his AC friend, with the address and numbers of the police station, and tell his AC friend to contact the owner and get his Switch back. It worked, and the owner was notified by the friend who managed to get his Switch back successfully.

If he didn't have AC, they wouldn't have a way of contacting his friends...
On a games console, in the year of 2020.

I wish they'd sent it in the form of a ransom note. Imagine opening your mail in Animal Crossing and it says "We have your friend."

See if Nintendo had Cloud support for Animal Crossing he would've bought another Switch, transfered his Animal Crossing save and remotely wiped his old Switch to be lost forever.

With how easy the back of the switch smudges you would think they could track the owner using fingerprints.
