At least seven at launch. Garchomp, Greninja, and Rayquaza will be added in DLC, I think.
I compiled a list of all the starters and the order they placed in.
- Pikachu and Eevee are on the list because of the original yellow and the Let's Go games, but because they cannot evolve in the game, their evolutions are not listed (Otherwise the eeveelutions will be in the higher placements on the list.
- Cyndaquil, Treecko and Fennekin had all stages make it into the top 30 of their region.
- Tepig and Chespin are the only starters that had none of their stages in the top 30 of their region.

Thing is, Greninja became the fan-favorite of the Kalos starters the literal second the final designs were revealed. Getting in Smash and then getting a super transformation in the Anime were just the icing on the cake.
if you consider those Pokémon forced then Mimikyu would be forced too lol

Squirtle and Blastoise being so low is what surprises me the most. Like I know quite a lot of people just don't like Venasaur's design, which is why the gap between it and Bulbasaur is so hilariously large, but Blastoise's placement surprises me alot.
Not even close for greninja. Froakie was the least liked starter. Everyone liked frogadier the most, a lot of fennekin people still stuck with braixen. Then everyone loved greninja because its a ninja frog. Long before knowing ash would have it or smash.
Sakurai picked greninja before xy were even revealed and early in development. So guess right. Same with the anime writers.
I hope we get a full list of all the pokemon and all the placements, just so we can figure out if Simisear repeated as the least popular pokemon in the poll.

It's probably because in my bubble of Pokemon fans, everyone I saw actually liked and did fan art for Mimikyu, but most people I've observed bemoan or genuinely disliked Lucario and Greninja.
Which makes Froakie the least liked. Because nobody likes Chespin.

I went to two Pokemon Centers in Tokyo last year because I desperately wanted those Umbreon socks. They were sold out everywhere (so I settled for Jolteon) and so was most of the other Umbreon merchandise. It's crazy popular, had no idea either. I was so happy I was able to get my hands on one of those mini Umbreon plushies, it was the last one.
Things change over time. Froakie was absolutely liked less than chespin back then.
Definitely a bubble then because they are generally loved by tons of people.
I'm not sure a loud and proud punk rocker counts as "mysterious".
This is really funny to see Greninja up top and Froakie on the bottom. What an ugly ducking story.
Or maybe it's just because anyone who would vote for Froakie just had to vote for Greninja instead.
Garchomp is the gen 4 pseudo, it's a land shark, it's competitively good, it has the Cynthia boost, a mega, of course it's crazy popular

No, it means there are too many great designs and just one couldn't be picked to syphon votes. Gen 5 is easily the best by far.
I'm quite surprised at how well Zeroara did considering how little advertisements Zeroara actually got at the time of it's release. Managed to outdo Meltan and Melmetal combined who came out at a similar time and got a much bigger push with Pokemon Go (plus the anime as well).

Similarly, I'm seeing a ton of people starting to claim that Bulbasaur is confirmed to be the most popular first-stage starter...when we still can't really know that unless they did a poll of just the first-stage starters. I'd wager most of the Charizard voters would switch to Charmander, giving it the lead again.
Gen V has the fewest overall votes as well, though. It was the most skipped region (in the poll).
Pinsir is infinitely cooler than Heracross and Scizor. That's right I said it.
