If my calculations are correct software on PS4 have sold around 1400 million copies.
Do we think it can surpass PS2 in terms of software sold sitting at more then 1537 million?
Games being released now are crossgen or further along the year only sold on PS5 so that will cut into the PS4 sales.

I wonder how the supply situation is evolving. This week in Canada there have been quite a few PS5 drops on retailers, all selling out within minutes to half an hour. Seemed like more drops than usual.

Actually, ArmGunar estimates total PS4 software sales are near 1500 million already. So, yes, PS4 will surpass PS2 in that metric.

Same in UK all week there was drops and next week some more drops. It's definitely getting better. Scalpers with large stock are gonna start sweating soon.

It seems the supplies are improving from the markets we get data from (Japan, US, Spain, UK) they all improved in/throughout Februari.

Thats impressive considering the install base of the two.
I would have expected otherwise, with back in the day of PS2 gaming being still seem as something "nerdy" to do so less casuals where buying consoles in my experience and also the competition of mobile gaming being present (time wise if you only can play certain amount of hours on gaming a week and a certain amount is spend on mobile gaming less time there is to play on consoles)
Although to counteract that the more "casuals friendly" games like CoD, AC are getting (almost) yearly releases which wasnt the case then so that will probably help with the software numbers.

What going to be crazy is PS4 will blow pass PS2 software sales with 35 million less hardware .
Then again PS2 was also pirate city so that also a factor lol .
I totally agree piracy affected PS2 software sales. But PS4 SW sales number also had other "negative" factors, like free PS+ games, PSNow and F2P games.
It is very possible to buy a PS4 console, to play hundreds of hours to multiple different games, without really buying any of them.
Or just buy a PS4 to play Fortnite :-)

Nice thread. It's been hard not to miss news with them scattered over all the PAL/NPD/MC threads. Hope you keep updating it.

Considering the recent stock improvement I wonder if they can outpace PS4 sales by the end of this quarter.

I think it's amazing that the PS4 hasn't surpassed the PS2 because of digital indie games. There are more cheap accessible games than ever whereas on PS2, it was physical only.

I don't really contribute much in sales thread, just lurk, but great thread OP!
Thanks!
I hope others can contribute to the thread with PlayStation sales info from their countries.
I plan to update the thread with news regularly, if it helps to have nice discussions, and to add more historical data when I find time for that task :-)

While true, during PS2 era you also had multiple games by the devs cause developing time was much much shorter. Rockstar release 3 GTAs during PS2 Era and none during PS4.
I think if you compare the number of games released between PS4 and PS2 i think they are pretty close. Would even give the edge to PS2.

edit:

I know it's not a good tracker, but Wikipedia says there are 4380 PS2 Games and 3155 PS4 Games

The irony of that statement is that one single GTA on PS4 has certainly sold more than any GTA on PS2 and probably even more than all of them combined.

I also think comparing straightforward software sales is misleading now if the PS is just a Fortnite or Warzone machine for people. It would be interesting to know how big or small that number is but Sony will likely never tell.

PSN blog has removed, since January, the section "DLC and Expansions" from its monthly Top Downloads posts.
So, it is a bit more difficult now to estimate, for example, the popularity of F2P games.
I think in ERA we normally ignore how big that part is for PlayStation business nowadays. Only every three months we can see that "DLC and Expansions" actually generates more revenue than retail and digital software sales, combined!

I love seeing those hardware sales figures in the OP, crazy to see how much of a beast the PS2 was. Would love to see PSVR sales someday.

As others have said it feels like PS5 stock is dropping more frequently in the UK. It still sells out almost immediately but it's a good sign.

Yes, hopefully coming months are fun and we can discuss here about sales on PS4/PS5 of upcoming games like Returnal, Resident Evil 8, FF7R Intergrade, etc. 😊

Thanks! I will update with weekly/monthly news. For example, sales in UK, Japan, Spain, etc. And more posts with historical data as well.
Although I prefer if I am not the only one adding news and information here. If you, or anyone, find something interesting, please, feel free to post it.

Good thread OP. Posting so I can keep track of the discussion.

Wonder when PS5 supplies get a bit more normalized. As I recall for the PS4, there was a drought and then a large shipment of hardware was delivered to stores to coincide with the inFamous SS launch.

Welcome!

It would be interesting to know when PS4 was normalized in different countries. Like, I think in Japan the console neved had stock issues, and in Europe it was possible to buy one easily during spring, at least in some countries. I have no idea what happened in other regions (USA/Canada, Australia, etc.).

As I don't see it posted here yet, below are the estimated US PS5 sales in relation to other consoles (LTD Nov 2020 - Jan 2021, taken from Welfares post in a NPD thread):

PS4: ~2.27M
PS5: ~2.22M
XB1: ~1.95M
XBS: <1.65M

True. My experience is purely from a US pov. Would be interesting to know how other regions did in that time frame for PS4

I can speak for the US, at least anecdotally. Stock issues lasted until about April 2014, after the system had a big March, and then nearly stabilized (ie I could walk into a store and see the console sitting on the shelves regularly) in May.

The first comparison has same amount of weeks, 17, for both systems. PS5 is behind but selling more units now per week.

I added week 9 in 2014 VS. week 9 in 2021 as this can be useful later. To see how the first March-May period was for both consoles, for example. Or during same weeks of summer, September, etc. Moreover, this is now one way to estimate total sales during FY2020 compared to FY2013.

Nice!
What's the update plan quarterly?
Goal of the thread is to compile news and discuss about PlayStation sales data as these are published or announced officially.
So, global PS4 and PS5 hardware sales will be probably updated quarterly. But sales in US monthly, and sales in UK, Japan, Spain, weekly.
Anyone who finds new information about PlayStation hardware or software sales can post and share data/links here for others to find it easily.

Cool stats. Do we have any stats on how well PSVR games sell?
Welcome!
Yes, every month we got that information in the PlayStation Blog (top downloads PS5, PS4, F2P and PSVR games).
blog.playstation.com

PlayStation Store: February 2021’s top downloads

FIFA 21, Grand Theft Auto V, Beat Saber, and Call of Duty: Warzone top the charts.
About LTD numbers, we don't have a source for sales, but gamstat is a reliable source for estimates of number of players, although it does not update since last November :-(
