Panic! at the Disco Announces Split: ‘It’s Been a Hell of a Journey’

Panic! at the Disco, the long-running band fronted by Brendon Urie, has announced its split.
Panic at the Disco, the pop-rock band that formed in Las Vegas nearly 20 years ago and gradually became a solo vehicle for frontman Brendon Urie, announced on Tuesday morning that the group will end after its forthcoming European tour. Urie says he and his wife are expecting their first child and "I am going to bring this chapter of my life to an end and put my focus and energy on my family, and with that Panic! At The Disco will be no more."
With Urie as the sole regular member of the band, it is unclear what the distinction between Panic and his future projects will be, but apparently he felt the name is no longer representative and, at the age of 35, decided it's time to move on from it.
His statement follows below in full.

Well, it's been a hell of a journey…

Growing up in Vegas I could've never imagined where this life would take me. So many places all over the world, and all the friends we've made along the way.

But sometimes a journey must end for a new one to begin. We've been trying to keep it to ourselves, though some of you may have heard.. Sarah and I are expecting a baby very soon! The prospect of being a father and getting to watch my wife become a mother is both humbling and exciting. I look forward to this next adventure.

That said, I am going to bring this chapter of my life to an end and put my focus and energy on my family, and with that Panic! At The Disco will be no more.

Thank you all for your immense support over the years. I've sat here trying to come up with the perfect way to say this and I truly can't put into words how much it has meant to us. Whether you've been here since the beginning or are just finding us, it has been a pleasure to not only share the stage with so many talented people but also share our time with you. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Europe and the UK for one last run together.

I love you. I appreciate you. Thank you for existing.

Brendon

Probably something with the rights of the band name with the original members, so the singer is going to use his name going forward is my guess.

It would be like Smith announcing The Cure is breaking up.

Even as a fan, I feel like aside from whatever legal relationships this might be severing -- this probably resonates more internally with him than with the fanbase.

Or perhaps I'm wrong? I dunno. Does he just go full broadway with his stuff? I'd be cool with that. He's got chops.

Sometimes I wish I could do shit like this, when I get sick of myself and want to start a new leaf.

It's weird that people are having trouble understanding this from a creative perspective.

Haven't you people ever heard of closing the god damn door on a chapter of your life?

Maybe now we can finally get the unreleased demos from the cabin album.

In all seriousness though, despite not listening to this band past the 3rd album, it's sad to see it finally come to an end. Their first album was the first CD I ever got as a pre-teen, and loved every second of it.

I thought the song reference would be people saying thanks for the memories, but this was way funnier

Man, I remember when they were an actual band and put out that epic first album. Good times.

Everything since then has been crap.

I really liked their first two albums back when they were a band. After that I kinda dropped off, and would only listen to the occasional song from each subsequent album.

Tried listening to the latest album when it came out and it just did nothing for me.

I'm not sure what this means if he was the only remaining regular member of the band, but... I'm still kind of sad to see it? I love PatD.

Looking forward to whatever Urie does in the future.

They had a good run with a remarkably broad range of material. I got to see 'em live a couple times and they always put on a great show. Their transition into being a Brendon solo act was a strange one to follow, but he's put out some pretty consistently great pop songs over the last few years.

It's for the best. All of the many allegations against Urie that have surfaced over the last few years have really soured me on him. Plus their first 2 albums were the only good ones anyway.

Good fucking riddance.

The last album totally flopping probably helped with this finally happening. Urie should have just committed to being a solo act like a decade ago anyway.

Panic! is one of my favorite bands ever, but given the fact that it has basically been a solo act for the last seven years/three albums, I can't say this news is disappointing me.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him return in a couple years just using the Brendon Urie name.

Last we heard Urie had bought the rights from all of the other bandmates so this is really just him announcing he is retiring the band name and using something else going forward. I would guess probably just his own name at this point. Might also mean he stops playing some of the older songs as well.

So is this like a mitosis situation, does he form two different side projects that are exactly the same?

Good on him for wanting to dedicate himself to spending time with and taking care of his child. As a new dad, I'd do the same in a heartbeat.

The Brendan + (insert backing band members) formula post Vices and Virtues has been hit or miss at best, but he definitely did have some undeniable hits in that time, and never stopped being a great live performer.

I'm not too torn about this but Middle School me definitely would be. Ryan Ross has finally won.

After an unlistenable new album and, far more importantly, continuing to hang around with and personally employ the guy who sexually harassed the wife of his former bandmate, I say good fucking riddance. I was a massive Urie fan since Fever dropped but the dude is a certifiable prick and his output has been dire since he lost all of his co-writers post-TWTLTRTD.

Don't let the door hit ya on the way out. Raise your child to be better than you.

Funny enough I was blasting their first album at work a couple days ago.

.. and that still remains to be their best album.

No idea how representative it is but I keep seeing on TikTok that people hate their latest album

It's much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality
