Week 35 - Retail (Ukie / GfK)

EA's Madden 21 debuts at No.10, with launch sales 43% lower than its predecessor. Meanwhile, Project Cars 3 lands at No.17, with launch sales 86% lower than the last game. Project Cars 3 is by Slightly Mad Studios, which released the Fast & Furious video game earlier this month. Both games sold roughly the same number of copies in its first week, however Project Cars 3 has performed far better critically, so may see an improvement in sales over time.

Note: Digital sales are not included in these charts.

That means it's Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons at No.1 again, followed by PGA Tour 2K21. The 2K golf game holds its No.2 position with a 28% drop in sales, which is impressive for a title in its second week on shelves.

Project Cars 3 has debuted in UK selling barely 2.000 units, this is a massive drop for the more than 50.000 units the first entry sold 4 years ago.

And as expected Captain Tsubasa is nowhere to be found.

Until a couple of years ago I would have said that Sony had no rivals whatsoever in Europe (France aside) but now I'm impressed at Nintendo's comeback

don't think sony consider Nintendo as a 'rival' in the traditional sense though as the players are interlap. The people buying switches for animal crossing can also be a person buying ps4 for fifa.....unlike the xbox which is a 'true' rival as if you bought xbox for fifa, you are unlikely going to buy it on PlayStation.

i will say that, as usual, Nintendo is charting its own territory instead of eating over others'.

I agree. But people have a limited amount of money. They could buy PS4 games, but they are buying Switch games too. So, it's less money going to Sony. In the end, they are rivals.

Wasteland 3 not even in the TOP40 is a surprise. Maybe Gamepass is not only killing some retail sales on Xbox (what I thought when The Outer Worlds released) but also on other systems when the games are simultaneous releases?

While they might cater different audiences, Sony and Nintendo are definitely competing with each other for consumers' money.

Wasteland 2 didn't chart in the top 40 either when it released iirc.

Wasteland 3 is a niche RPG and its market is PC mainly and PC is mostly digital.

Wasteland 2 on consoles was a late port and it's not something the console audience is used to play.

It's not surprising to not see the game chart on consoles

One thing is being niche and other not charting in the top 40 adding PS4 and XONE sales combined in a week when number 17 sells < 2000 units. That's why I was surprised

But I thought Captain Tsubasa would chart too, I guess the series was not as popular as it was in southern europe. Here in Spain the anime was pretty huge

Captain Tsubasa was mostly popular in the usual anime-loving countries. I hope we'll see it chart in Italy, Spain and perhaps Germany and Switzerland next week (I don't think it will be able to chart in the top 5 in France tbh).

Animal Crossing has got some serious legs.

I wonder how long GTA 5 will chart for as I'm sure it'll be until the successor is out.

I'm waiting for a price drop, and I never wait for price drops. It just doesn't feel worth full price to me for whatever reason. Hard to put my finger on why. I'd pay anything for Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 and Kingdom Hearts Theatrythm, so I'm definitely not a genre snob either.

Captain Tsubasa is pretty much completely unknown in the UK.

Animals are still crossing. Also, I love that the Crash Trilogy is still charting over three years later. I remember the naysayers when this title was rumoured. I'm please to say that they've been proven wrong. Heck, it's even led to Crash Bandicoot 4!

not really most of ps4 players only play sports or online games only those who play those games already bought them. switch players on the other hand almost all of them only buy Nintendo games (I'm one of them lol) which is why thier games sells a lot

From PAL Charts Week 24 thread when it crossed 1.5 million in UK:
It must be New Super Mario. Bros (Nintendo DS) but I don't exactly know how much ended up selling. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy must have already outsold New Super Mario. Bros. Wii so it is currently the second best selling platformer ever in UK.

Could become best selling platformer ever in UK.

I expected pCars to bomb but 86% down and no.17 is abysmal.

The new direction put a lot of people off but it's interesting to see that sentiment actually filter through to sales.

Animal Crossing is a goddamn monster. Wouldn't be shocked to see it at 35M+ by the end of the year. With just over 9 months of sales, it could be right around Mario Kart Wii's sales, which would be insane. Most other top selling video games had multiple releases on different platforms or were bundled extensively.

Captain Tsubasa with only 5 days of tracking was the second best selling game of August in the biggest retailer in Spain, which approximately has 35-40% market share.

vandal.elespanol.com

GTA 5 domina las ventas de videojuegos de agosto en GAME España

El popular juego de Rockstar no pierde fuelle y continúa arrasando en ventas. En segundo lugar encontramos a Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions y en tercer puesto a Animal Crossing.

Only the first five weeks of data were shared of TLOU2 and GOT. It should be noted that ACNH had a big second week drop, but obviously had tremendous legs over the following months, due to COVID-19.

This is UK data only.
