FF7 Rebirth is around the corner which of course features a rearranged score of Nobuo Uematsu's classic soundtrack for an important game released 27 years ago. On that new score Uematsu will contribute with a new theme song called "Promises to Keep" sing by Lorren Allred, but outside of that the overall soundtrack is handled by several new composers and Uematsu has declared that "he probably won't compose an entire soundtrack for a game again" to German newssite Zeit. This means the RPG "Fantasian" released on Apple devices back in 2021 was his final project.

What a legacy though!

Deserved and understandable tbh.

Fantasian OST is a solid way to go out.

That's a shame but totally understandable. He shouldn't have to do 100 song rushes anymore with where he is in life now. I do hope he gets the chance to at least help produce or direct an overall soundtrack production for final fantasy at some point just to cap off his legacy, even if he has composers under him to do a lot of the brunt of the work.

Man has left quite the legacy and has nothing left to prove. Do what makes you happy in your sun-setting years.

In the gaming sphere he's well known but he's such an underrated composer and musician. Much of his work transcends gaming but no one would ever know unless they are gamers. I'm sad to read this, but it sounds like he'll still be doing some music from time to time. Legend.

Don't blame him. It takes a lot out of musicians, even when they don't crunch like he and Mitsuda seemed to in the 90s at Squaresoft.

This reminds I never properly checked his Fantasian work, what a crime. The greatest.

I imagine he'll work on a few tracks for that dark fantasy game Sakaguchi is making (that might also be his last!).

Sakaguchi said this on his behalf back when Fantasian came out, but it's bittersweet to hear him say it himself.

Hope he still has a lot of time left. I might consider him the greatest living composer.

God I hope Fantasian eventually comes to consoles.

Uematsu is alongside Koji Kondo and Joe Hisaishi just an unbelievable fucking legend in my eyes. The music these three put out absolutely deserve all the accolades they've been given and so much more.

Yeah, Uematsu has nothing to prove and can do whatever makes him happy. Not only is he the GOAT video game composer, he's one of the greatest contemporary composers period. I'll look forward to whatever work he does decide to do in the future. Here's hoping for another theme song to close out the FFVII:R trilogy.

Guy's deserved a well earned rest for years now with the amount of work he's put out. Hope he can enjoy a long and peaceful life.

Hope I get to play Fantasian someday. Legit started Lost Odyssey last year and got chills when I heard the main theme and felt the same when I heard some tracks from Rebirth (don't know if he worked on them but they were certainly built from his original work). The man is a legend and I'll miss hearing new music from him when I start a game.

Genuinely insane how good of a composer this guy was and is. And every time he comes back he has another absolute winner with him. And he's good at everything. Battle, boss themes, field themes, everything is a banger.

Can't think of anyone that's written as many absolutely phenomenal final boss themes in particular.

What a legend! Just his PS1 titles alone put him in the top, not to mention everything before and after. My all-time favorite video game composer.

I love this man and I respect the fuck out of him and he is infinitely entitled to pursue whatever he pleases.

I mean, he didn't do all of FF7 Remake, and it ended up being my favorite soundtrack of all time. His contributions there were lovely, even if they weren't all of them.

Airbuster was a cool remix, hell yeah, but the original new boss themes by others such as Ghoul and Valkyrie? Badass.

I don't know if Crab Warden was a different take by someone else or if Uematsu helmed the whole thing, but a HUGE thumbs up for that terrific theme.

Greatest video game composer to have ever lived. He deserves the rest and to focus on passion projects.
