On December 14, 2017, an international patent application by Nintendo Co., Ltd. for a "Passive Walking Device and Passive Walking Module" was published with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). To get a basic understanding of what this patent is about, take a look at this video:

They use these drawings also (background art from a different patent):

Passive walking device and passive walking module

Technical Field

[0001]

The present invention relates to a passive walking device and a passive walking module

Background Art

[0002]
A conventional passive walking device is disclosed in japanese patent application laid-open no. 2011-131677 (1) there is provided a passive walking device according to the present invention. In a passive walking device described in patent document 1, (2つ) of legs and a hip joint including a waist axis. (2つ) of legs are attached to the hip joint by being rotatably connected to the waist shaft

Patent document 1: japanese patent application laid-open no. 2011-131677
Summary of the invention

Problem to be solved by the invention

[0004]

In the passive walking device described in patent document 1, (2つ) each of the legs does not have a mechanism operable in cooperation with each other. Thus, in the passive walking device described in patent document 1, it is difficult to stably continue walking

[0005]
The present invention has been made in view of the problem of the prior art. More specifically, provided is a passive walking device capable of stably continuing passive walking

Means for solving the problem

[0006]

A passive walking device according to one aspect of the present invention includes a first side part and a second side part, and a second side part located on the opposite side of the first side part; a first leg connected to the first side part; a second leg, a second leg connected to the second side part, a first leg side crank part provided on the first side part, a second leg side crank part provided on the second side part so as to have a phase opposite to that of the first leg side crank part, a crank shaft for connecting the first leg side crank part and the second leg side crank part, a first leg-side connection part connected to the first leg-side crank part and a second leg-side connection part connected to the first leg-side crank part, and a second leg side connection part connected to the second leg side crank part and the second leg side

[0007]

When the first leg is in contact with the walking surface and moves from front to rear relative to the waist, the first leg side connection part rotates the first leg side crank part, the first leg side crank part rotates the second leg side crank part via the crank shaft. A second leg-side crank part includes a first leg-side crank part and a second leg-side crank part, the second leg is moved from the rear to the front relative to the waist through the second leg-side connection part
Effects of the invention

[0008]

According to the above, the passive walking device can continue stable passive walking

Why Nintendo has decided to file a patent application for this I do not know. But remember as always that a patent application is not proof of an upcoming product, it is just an idea. Whether Nintendo will enter the field of passive dynamics only time can tell.

I searched but found no prior thread on this topic.

The way to hack Pokemon Go so that you have a pair of robotic legs walk for you?

...

Ok, stupid guess, but at least it wasn't another post saying ROB (even though ROB has no legs...).

Nintendo has dedicated R&D to hardware at all times. Work on the next system begins the day the latest one ships. This isn't close to the strangest patent they've filed.

Reminds me of the Nintendo Ultra Hand. If they don't call them Ultra Legs, I'm gonna be disappointed.

This could be as simple as an engineer cooking something up in his free time and Nintendo filing a patent on it with no plan to do anything with it.

OR, the QOL project/team could have expanded in a way no one ever anticipated lol.

FNAF: Real Life Nintendo Edition

But seriously, I'm betting this was something they produced while working on some theme park animatronics for the Universal Nintendo World theme parks. A lot of patents are filed when companies develop something they find patentable when working on tangential projects.

QOL finally bearing some fruit? Looks like an interesting take on a metal exoskeleton for people with problems walking, although I admit I'm confused why a set of legs that can walk downhill on its own is super interesting. I don't quite get how it works, but it certainly looks neat

Looks like that weird health tech division Iwata started produced a few ideas.

They are either going to make a sequel for ARMS named LEGS or they plan a machine uprising giving legs to all the Switches is our houses to enslave us all.
