New PS4 games must also run on PlayStation 5 from July, Sony tells devs

Sony has told PlayStation 4 game developers that any new titles submitted for certification must also be compatible wit…

This doesn't bode super well for their BC approach - putting the onus on devs to do this work means is a bummer for everyone:

Sony has told PlayStation 4 game developers that any new titles submitted for certification must also be compatible with PlayStation 5, beginning 13th July.

This means all PS4 games received by Sony for testing after the middle of that month are technically forwards compatible - playable on Sony's next-gen console - though it is up to each game's developer to ensure this is the case.

Sony has told developers it will contact them individually with details on how to test PS5 compatibility, in the order of their various projects' release.

If a game was originally submitted to Sony before 13th July 2020, any new patch or remaster after that date would not require PS5 compatibility, but it would be "strongly recommended".

If a game was originally submitted to Sony after 13th July 2020, any future patch or remaster to that game would need to keep PS5 compatibility. Once a game is PS5 compatible, it must stay so.

The whole article is pretty interesting.
Seems indeed like more work and policies than you'd expect.

From July? So only a few months before launch? Weird that the timeline is so short.

I'm not going to read much in to that for now, it could be a simple process that Sony wants done so they can get on with testing older stuff.

This means for all games? Inclucing smaller ones?

I sure hope Sony has provided enough devkits in that case.

I really dont see a problem

Latest games releasing having a ps5 version will makes things faster

They will really not have enough time to test the latest games which will delay their compatibility

Imagine releasing a game on october and then testing for compatibility

Most likely means it needs to work at the console's native clock speed but let's jump to the less logical conclusion that no game submitted before July will run on PS5.

So basically we won't see situations like this gen where there were still 7th gen exclusives launching after 8th gen was out, like Borderlands The Pre Sequel.

This thread will be a disaster of people making inferences that previous games won't work, when Sony has already confirmed multiple times that they expect the vast majority of games to work.

It just says that new PS4 games will also have to work on PS5, .....
Kinda like "smart delivery"

It says nothing about BC.
But lets get this thread rolling ....

It's the same as their requirement for PS4 games once the Pro launched. You're reading too much into this. The article itself says it's for games applying for certification starting July. Essentially it's a "You can't release PS4-only titles from now on".

since we have official PR on Ps5 BC status FUD should get warns. speculation on things we know for sure are tiring.
