I'd say it's probably the most scared I've been playing a game since playing the original Silent Hill trilogy, 1, 2, & 3, for the first times when they were new. Outlast, Resident Evil 7 (even in VR), RE2 Remake, Dead Space, Amnesia, etc. None of them compare. Puppet Combo uses the presentation and technique of riffing on classic PS1 games to outlandish success. Something intangible yet immeasurably effective about the game's captured moment in time, technologically, makes it so much scarier than I can imagine anything with cutting edge realistic visuals, like the new Resident Evil games, even if they were designed similarly to Murder House. However, it's specifically the sound design that I think is the ultimate trick to this game's ridiculously unsettling appeal. Some of the ambiance, piercing screams, and "music" feel scientifically applied to be as miserably unpleasant as possible, especially with headphones, and cranked just hard enough to be almost physically unbearable, even if the sound design is utilized in rooms or scenario where literally nothing is actually happening. Also, the general plausibility of the game's scenario compared to most horror games (taking place largely in a house that is actually like designed and laid out like a real house, not an Umbrella mansion estate or art museum precinct) and obvious inspirations from classic B-horror slasher flicks might have you reckoning that the game is light on imagination, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It balances cheese, gory thrills, jump scares, unbearable tension, genuine unrestrained horror, and sickening subject matter in extremely creative ways. It's literally one of only a handful of horror games I've ever played where I've felt tempted to take a break from it because of how suspenseful and scary it is.

It's only like $10-$12 on all major platforms, and I highly recommend it to any horror game enthusiasts especially if you're a fan of the classic style Resident Evil and Silent Hill games. Since it's also pretty easily finished in just a sitting or two, I think it would also lend well to be played with a friend or audience of some kind to share in the scares.

I've also played The Glass Staircase, also by Puppet Combo, which was a lovely little game and has its moments but it does not compare to Murder House at all. How is Power Drill Massacre?

Play stay out of the house next. Really great atmosphere and gameplay loop.

Powerdrill is scary but doesn't have quite as much depth as his most recent games. Dude has evolved a lot over the years

That cursed PS1 artstyle + The fact there is exactly 0 reviews for this game on Metacritic and Opencritic, is giving off "I found a glitched off brand copy of X obscure horror game from the 90s, I played for an hour last night, and now i'm hearing knocking coming from my second story bedroom window" creepypasta realness

I might just have to buy 😂

OH BABY

even scarier

Thank you both. Once I've sufficiently decompressed from Murder House I'll check out those two. Can they also each be finished comfortably in a sitting? I think doing some kind of "viewing" party for one of them for Halloween would be fun.

Power Drill is harder and much more esoteric

It might be good for a single-sitting "lets get fucking scared and pass the controls around", but don't expect a deep story or even being able to finish it

there's also a lot of hidden depth to it you gotta kinda look around for if you want depth

its much more shallow than Murder House, but it is still FUCKING terrifying and great for a halloween party

You should play Babysitter Bloodbath as well, it started out as an unofficial "Halloween 1978" game

it has a bit more structure than Power Drill

fuck it, have a full Puppet Combo party, get all weirded out and creeped to the max

You sold me. You should get a commission.

Switch or PS4? Would it make a difference?

edit - pulled the trigger on the PS4 version

I just played through it. Credits are literally rolling as I type this. LOVED IT. I didn't find it quite as scary as you did, but it's genuinely creepy and unsettling. But also kind of amusing, with how bad the voice acting and graphics are, in a very earnestly nostalgic way. I normally am not into graphic filters and such, but the whole VHS look works for this too.

If you like 80's slasher films and PS1 horror you absolutely should check this out.

It's not as good as Murder House and a bit repetitive with the back tracking but the recently released Bloodwash is pretty great too. While not published by Puppet Combo directly its from friends of theirs and was promoted in a post on their Patreon:

store.steampowered.com

Bloodwash on Steam

A serial killer is terrorizing the city, and Sara's deadbeat boyfriend hasn't done the laundry. Can Sara survive a late-night trip to the laundromat, or will the Womb Ripper perform an early delivery?

It's short but I also recommend Night Shift by Puppet Combo. You can get it either in a bundle with some of their other stuff on itch or through their Patreon:

Scary Tales Vol. 1 by Puppet Combo

Four of the scariest VHS soaked shorts in one shocking anthology! PS1 style survival horror!

it is VERY grind house in its style, Texas Chainsaw Massacre like (as you'd expect from the name), but also it is brutal in how quickly you can bite it and get got, lots of trial and error.

theres also an absolutely terrifying basement maze that made me shit bricks

Just from the trailer I'm seeing where the OP is coming from, this looks dope.

I imagine it'll see a discount in the Halloween Sale when that starts around the 28th.

Eveyone who enjoyed Murder House should definitely subscribe to their pateron for at least a month at 10 bucks, gets their back catalogue. Tho I'd suggest leaving it running for at least a few given the quality.

Of course this is pc related, and doesn't help the console only users discovering them through Murder House. They tweeted they wanted to port some others to console tho

Any love for Phasmophobia on PC? one of the few games I had to stop playing because of how much it was getting to me at times.

Of course, Phasmophobia is great, though it doesn't quite scratch the same itch stuff like Murder House does. The lo poly psx style visuals really do evoke this surreal, impressionist like vibe that is perfect for horror games. Your mind sorta fills in the blanks.

I haven't been back to Phasmophobia in awhile since there have been several large updates, though it's for sure one of the most compelling multiplayer horror games out there. I hope the dev or another studio iterates on it with a larger budget. The only thing that bums me out is one of the coolest aspects of it, using the Ouija board, only ever worked once for me in god knows how many hours of playtime. Oh yeah and the VR mode desperately needs a snap to hand function for item pickups like HL: Alyx does it. Dropping my flashlight for the umpteenth time in VR gets annoying with no snap to hand ability.

You know how Silent Hill games have this crazy dark unsettling theme that just makes you exhuasted/tense throughout the whole thing? That's what Murder House replicates really well, especially the intro. It's just nonstop dread and tension. I do think the intro is the scariest part. I wouldn't be able to play that on my own honestly.

I find this game more relaxing/fun honestly. I really don't find it scary at all probably because you're supposed to play it with friends but even if I'm in a room by myself while they're all off doing other things in the map, I'm fine sitting there in the dark waiting for stuff to happen. I think the issue is it's extremely easy to find the limits of the AI and learn that you're safe almost at all times. The AI is really dopey and ez to cheese, though new updates have helped some. It really needs more unpredictability and randomness because after like 3 rounds, you know what to expect every time.

Still a fun game though that I really enjoy.

Never heard of them before, but the trailer looks fun as hell! Will definetly try it on switch!

Does the game feel clunky to play? Are the controls responsive? I'm perfectly fine with fixed camera and tank controls...as long as it feels responsive like REmake for example

I have fond memories of survival horror games from that era, so my interest is definitely piqued. I watched some footage after reading the OP and now this game is on my To Play list.

It's not as smooth or tight as REmake, but still controls totally fine. The big difference in how it plays is that the camera can swing around and track the player pretty awkwardly, which can make specific spots clumsy to move through, and the rooms in general are probably a bit smaller than a typical room in Resident Evil. There's also no 180-degree quick turn.

Started playing last night and loved the little bit I played but the default "dolley" camera is way too floaty for the tank controls which had me turning into the walls and getting caught in the prologue without a chance to use the hide mechanics.

That and the lack of borders/obstacles to prevent you from going too far away, obstructed from view with no sense of where you are or which direction you're facing.

I don't want to switch to first person as that isn't how I want to play a Silent Hill psx game.

It's awesome. I immediately bought the rest of their catalog on itch, along with some games with that same style. Much respect to Puppet Combo.

Alright you convinced me OP, I always loved watching Dashie play these on youtube. I was gonna get it initially, but even though it's only $12 hours that 1 hour playtime put me off a bit. But fuck it, it's spooky season.
