It's noticeable when you fight them a lot. I mean, the Kula Yaku in this event is pretty gigantic.

Small is far more noticeable than big if your a melee user. Twice now I've noticed a small gold crown monster invading a quest to kill something else, but sadly both times where online and people dungbomb it away and didn't see my chat explaining why we should kill it. Tiny bazel is almost cute.
You will know when you get a big or a small one and not an avarage. I mean small great girros was almost the size of normal girros, I couldn't tell them apart lol. Big pukei was the size of a fucking rathian and big Jargass was huge and I mean huge, like he ate 3 other Jargasses haha.
It just a few examples but trust me, you will know when you get a big or a small one.

I'd like to know that as well, while searching on google there doesn't seem to be any kind of buff to different size monsters, specially since it is LR.
Odogaron Mini doesn't feel like showing up to me, so many runs and it is the only one I'm missing from that bunch.
Next week has an event that will have a guaranteed mini Odogaron. Imagine this week's Kula event, but on the other end of the spectrum.
as long the quest have at least a silver and a gold reward it really dont matter.

They all can give you crowns, even all bronze rewards can give crowns. Conditions matter more than rewards. You have better chance of getting a crown from 2 player, 15 minutes, 1 faint investigation than 4 players, 50 minutes, 5 faints. It's still only a chance, only evdnts with fixed sizes can guarantee a crown, like kulu or anja events.
Right but what's the value of tempered rewards? Same as silver or something? Is gold + silver like the magic combo?
You can still have a chance to get an crown but from my experience I only gotten a gold crown for the event or from quest that had those rewards.
Had a productive session earlier, got all the weekly bounties done, and picked up some more crowns....4 in 2 runs of the weekly event.
It was just enough to get me my 10 large and 10 small achievements.
I also got to use my new HBG more. I find the automatic block slightly finicky at times but with guard 3 and guard up it seems almost as good as the GL shield. Not sure I would use it for tempered elders but for everything else it's good fun.
Yoshichan if you really want to get crowns, the type of investigation matters less than "sniping" the crowns. Load in, measure the creature (after watching a YouTube video) and quit if its not what you need. Keep doing that until you find one big or small enough to be worth killing.

There is no such a thing as magic combo. It's all luck based. Like I said some conditions may push that luvk a bit more but it's still luck. I got both crowns for some monster with as little as 14 kills/captures and I got monsters with 150 kills/captures with only one crown for them.
Next weapon I will try out is the Long Sword. Already had the Bazel Varga Rookslayer lying around and just forged a Legia Stealer because of its description alone: "Slash, and may any foe your blade reflects be laid low upon the silver ice."
I have officially given up on the crowns. I came to the conclusion that the Plat isn't worth the lame grind. I can almost see the smug Capcom designer who dreamed this up having the laugh of a lifetime. I think there's a good reason why the Plat is at 0,1% after a couple of months. :) I only go for the Plat when I'm having actual fun doing it, like Bloodborne. Even the chalice dungeons were fun due to the new enemies and challenging bosses.
10 small, 10 large should have been the end trophies. I don't even have that after 230 hours. I think I was at 7/8 last night when I took a look and then immediately said fuck that.
If a useless trophy is making you not have fun with a game you previously enjoyed that's on you.

Like every fucking thing because I didn't know this game was Pokemon until I had reached 400 hours and started looking at the fucking trophies
I'm just hoping the festival is bringing all the events back so I can at least get a couple of free ones like small Odogaron and big Legiana (???)
Real talk. Glad I've got off that shit some years ago, i regret spending so much time and nerves with some bs trophies back in the day.
As a fun fact, I've only ever got all crowns in one MH game to date (abusing the RNG) and I've played all main line entries since 2007.
For reference. This is MHFU. The small crown for Monoblos was really hard for me (first guild card) while my friend got it in his first try (second guild card).
You are correct! And it's not really impacting my overall fun with the game. I'm just saying that I gave up on that particular part. I like trophy hunting in certain games and in this one I had fun with it up to this point, that is all. I still like the game. But I haven't played anything other than MHW since it came out, so I'm playing other games and only checking into MHW to farm the weekly gold ticket and mess around a bit. I definitely got my money's worth out of this one and it was my first MH game - I absolutely love it, but I think I've personally exhausted the content at this point. But I've put in far more hours than in any other game in recent memory.
How? You hunt monsters and you get a shit ton of mats while doing it. Crowns really don't matter unless you are a freak like me and needs to have everything done cause otherwise it will bother him forever. I'm long past 600 hours mark, I have crafted both versions of every armor in the game and now I'm doing the same with weapons and I just farm crowns in the process. You can have fun while doing it, you don't have to kill one monster 50 times in a row while going for crowns. You can also learn new weapons in the process or make different builds for the ones you have.
If the crowns and the trophy is the only thing that keeps you playing than take a break and sooner or later Capcom will have mini or huge monster events.
I remember chatting with a rando while playing Toukiden, the guy tells me he is playing for the Platinum (he had lots of them) and I couldn't avoid laughing while thinking "You've come to the wrong neighborhood."

The problem is that this game is so good that you need more. Not many games make me feel this way and even huge arse RPGs, which I love to play, I only spend around 100 hours on a single playthrough and then move on. I can't stay with one game for too long.
Didn't Capcom say that a monster takes them roughly 3 months to make and implement? I can why these things take time, I really can. It just makes for a loooong wait for something substantial like a new area inhabited by four completely new monsters (if that's even what they're going for). But I'll take something substantial down the line over one new monster at a time here and there.

It's ALL rng. I could see a Kirin bigger than my left testicle, compare it to the other Kirin who's smaller than my right testicle, and there would be NO crown from any of them.

Just play overly cautious keeping your distance when it is all red and crispy, safer to not do damage than risk it all.
Why are these crowns suddenly so important to you? You put over 400 hours in this game without caring for them. Suddenly you discover them and you hunt them like a man possessed.
I mean, I can't tell you how to play the game and I understand it's frustrating since the crown RNG is even worse than gems and shit. But it feels like this would be a great new goal to work towards over the course of the next few days, maybe even weeks.
I don't get why you need to collect them all in one night like your life depends on it.
Actually, the devs give you hints if it's a larger than normal monster. I've had fought several Nergigantes in my adventures. Two weeks ago, I encountered one with a lower then usual pitched voice. Turns out he was a big enough boy to give me the large crown for his encounter.
