Microsoft and SIE both made competing bids for Valheim and Immortality to have those games on their subscription services. Microsoft won both bids.
Sony typically does not require subscription exclusivity for games included on PS Plus. Microsoft often requires day one Game Pass titles to not be made available on competing subscription services.

It's good that this got confirmed now, because last year we had a thread here with over 30 pages about 'Microsoft claims Sony pays for blocking rights to keep games off Xbox Game Pass'.

Even The Verge's Tom Warren wrote an article about it and called it an "explosive claim".

Meanwhile Microsoft is doing the same thing. Signing deals to block 3rd party games coming to PS+.

That was already known, I remember reading this a few years back.
Well I guess this time it's « official »

This is a Sony document, "typically" is doing a lot of heavy lifting lol.
Day One releases is no different from a marketing contract and as we saw with the RE8 docs that's industry standard.

If Sony wants more Day one releases they can pay up more, no one forces these devs to sign these.

The two games listed aren't even on PS consoles, they simply got outbid for timed exclusivity lol.

This situation is exactly like Stray.

I mean it's the same reason some of the Bethesda stuff was delayed on game pass, Sony had exclusivity and they had to wait that out.

I feel like this has been obvious for like two years now despite people constantly trying to pretend it wasn't.

This sucks for the PlayStation community. Immortality is damn good.

Lmao Microsoft really was the pot calling the kettle black there weren't they?

I think the interesting note is that Sony was looking at those games as day one PS+ titles, and currently neither of those games are even on PlayStation… Although I guess it fits, MS has been buying exclusivity on a lot of those smaller games

If the game is on PS+, then its ok to not be on GP. But if its not, then that's another thing....

This was clearly established as a normal practice and anyone saying otherwise was absurd to say so.

I've heard that buying exclusivity for individual games is worse than buying publishers. What if you're doing both?

Man is it. It's not even on the same planet. " You can't get this game in Sony's subscription service." vs "You can't get this game period on this console."

Eh, this is more in reference to when the RE Village marketing contract leaked and blew up due to a "competitors subscription service clause", not timed-exclusivity.

Ok, but do we know who did it first? It's obvious the later party has to adapt.

No, just people acting like Microsoft doesn't partake in these things because they believe every word from Phil Spencer's mouth. They know who they are but they're busy in another thread.

Reminder this came in an email from Jim Ryan who of course is going to paint it this way.

Also how many Day and Date games have launched into plus? Less than ten?

Keeping it off PS+ is a different beast to keeping it off PS entirely. I'll feel bad for Sony when I have the choice to play FF7R on my XSX.

Sounds pretty standard honestly.

Didn't Sony pay to keep Resident Evil off Game Pass? Or maybe I'm thinking of another Capcom franchise.

Of course they did, but that didnt stop people for trying to let Microsoft play the victim.

At least these deals are a value add to GP. Whereas Sony blocks games not even on their sub service.

Everyone pretty much knew this. Tunic, Sable, The Medium and now probably Scorn all released Day 1 Game Pass and consequently were timed Xbox exclusives because of that.

Sony did the same with Stray, Tchia and Humanity.

Not good guy MS! say it isn't so.

People were losing their marbles when the accusations were levied against Sony (end of last year or so yeah?)

Goal posts will moved again I guess.

Well, Sony DID pay for specific games to not come to GP, not sure how MS doing the same is a gotcha.
especially since MS values GP a lot more than Sony values their own subscribtion service who rather pay 3rd party developers to not release games on Xbox at all.

If I'm understanding this correctly....there is nothing wrong with that??

Ofc if the deals also meant to not release the games on other consoles, this is another matter.
