No-One-Gets-Out-Alive-Netflix-1200x900.jpg

Going into this film I wasn't expecting much. At first glance you've got your fairly typical haunted house set up with a dash of creepy sibling action in the mix but this time around our protagonist is a young illegal immigrant in dire straights working a terrible job and with nowhere else to go. You know where this is going, ghosts of past residents, increasingly weird antics from the brothers, horrible dreams of a dead relative and even a cursed box this time from South America. It was not something I expected to think much about after a first watch after the intro.

I was expecting a possession story or something along those lines but with the demon being of indigenous American mythology but in the last 20 minutes it actually threw me a twist I was not expecting. The box turns out to be some sort of non Euclidean construct or gate that when opened allows a pretty gnarly looking monster to come through. Its a great fucking design that would have made Miura proud but it wasn't Berserk that I was thinking of when I saw it but another horror film a lot of people liked from a few years back, in part because of its fantastic monster design, The Ritual.

This is where the spoilers for multiple films comes in. No One Gets Out Alive actually seems to exist in the same universe as The Ritual featuring its own stunningly designed monster. The creatures share from both films are striking in design and have similar features and seem to work in similar fashions like preying on those who feel guilty or are plagued by regret and offering worshippers extended life through the capture of more sacrifices or potential worshippers.

Looking into it further it the films have the same director and are based on a series of books which explains the connections but I don't really think there was any real marketing around the fact they're connected which seems odd in the age of cinematic universes and their potential if they catch on. It's actually rather hard to talk about the spoiler without bring up the other movie but it does make for a cool little extended universe and potentially sets up a third film if the creatives want to go there. Hopefully the future monster design is as strong as the first two creatures. They're some of the best I've seen in a decade, maybe two and I love all the implications of what could be found in this world by those encumbered by extreme emotional scars in the dark places rarely traveled.

Do we call it, The Ritual Cinematic Universe? What other regions of the world or pantheons might you want to see the director explore for a future film?

I am always VERY appreciative of horror movie monsters that aren't just dudes in suits.

Given we've got "spirit of nature" and Indiginous mythos creatures, I'd love to see a "thing that exists past the edge of perception" type creature, a technological monstrosity, or something really hard to pin down like the memetic spoken virus from Pontypool that lives in words.

All I know of The Ritual is the monster, and that was from a thread here about it.

I'm not a huge horror fan, but that's because its boring. Nothing really pushes the envelope these days, except maybe 1 or 2 movies a year.

Sure, but I'm a very casual horror film watcher. My father was super into the weird arthouse horror films and the old weird ones, and I just haven't kept up with anything that's not really advertised.

Both monsters are definitely cool designs.

The movies aren't by the same director though. The Ritual was directed by David Bruckner, who just put out a new movie called The Night House. No One Gets Out Alive was directed by Santiago Menghini, and it appears to be his feature-length directorial debut.

Thanks for making the thread though, I didn't know the films shared any connection so it's cool to know they were both based on books by the same guy, Adam Nevill. Knowing that might make me pick up one his books to see what other monsters he's come up with.

Interestingly enough, both films were Executive Produced by Gollum-himself, Andy Serkis.

I don't do horror movies but the larger concept you're talking about sounds dope as hell.

Not to highjack your thread but how do you trace a song in these movies that are uncredited? There is a track playing in the background when the main character was discussing getting her papers with her African co-worker in a bar of sorts. The song isn't on the official soundtrack.

Most of the creatures seem to be incredibly ancient in origin. Moder was being worshipped and contained in the forest area for ages going off how large the contingent of praying corpses held in that upstairs room in the village and the creature from NOGOA was discovered in some ancient site of worship in Central/South America. Not sure how a technological monstrosity would fit in persay but you could certainly do tons of variants on the idea or perhaps expand beyond it into other supernatural creatures that have existed in the shadows and were once worshipped by humanity at large.

Both monsters are definitely cool designs.

Yeah I meant they shared a producer though I admit I wasn't talking about Serkis. I already grabbed a couple of his books. He's got some free short story collections on his website.

Yeah its a cool idea and one that is a bit more subtle than most horror movies might go with totally different titles and initial set ups for the individual movies. Its honestly kind of refresihng.

Thank you for this thread, I wouldn't have found these two great horror movies!!! People should give these a watch if they haven't. I'm going to look up the books now.

I haven't looked into the books but I think the author has a few more in the same "universe" from what I was reading online. Would be cool to see some more films featuring other creatures.

Huh. I didn't realize that and I'd seen and enjoyed both films.
I can totally see it now thought and I hope he keeps exploring the universe.

Speaking of freaky monster designs, I would love a demonic/christianity horror movie that shows an accurate angel.

I am thinking of buying his two latest books (self-published) and hope that I actually find time to read them.

This "series" of films would be a pretty apt place to set a gnarly take on an biblical angel. We've see what Norse and Aztec creatures might looki like and the weird amalgamation of human and animal parts would create something horrific for sure. There are even several ways to work with the "person with a lot of guilt" being accosted and manipulated by the creature.
