I am a little surprised they aren't going to hold off releasing it alongside the show, but maybe it won't matter.
Why is it again that this is necessary? A PS3 game that got a PS4 remaster now needs a PS5 remake? Please someone, make this make sense.
yes, i've always assumed it was quietly pushed back along with the show, so it dropping this year would be a surprise but i can't say i expect it.
Shows tend to wrap filming about 6 months before release right? The show's supposed to wrap filming within a month, so it very well may release in December, right around when this remake would release

Trying to release video games in schedule with films/TV is asking for trouble. Game production is way too unpredictable.
Something isn't always made because it's needed.

Agreed! If somehow that and GoW both come out late this year that'll be a great 1-2 punch to soften the blow for me of botw2 getting delayed.
Bring it more in line with TLOU2. The gameplay jump was massive. It's kinda hard to go back to TLOU1.
coincide with HBO show, introduce it to new audiences who own a brand new console etc = $$$
Plus it will be nice to see the graphics updated and the combat a bit more fluid like part 2
Show is not out till 2023. Seems weird it would release before the show is available considering its based on the same plot more or less.
I think the logic is that they release it before and it sells well then the show comes along and gives it a good bump
I think it'd be to bring the IP back into the limelight, followed by Factions 2 & the HBO show next year to continue growing the audience, specifically for Factions 2.
Come onnnn Sony, this would be so clutch. Would round out 2022 nicely and free up ND to get cracking on their next new game ASAP
Cool, I wonder if it means the same for Factions 2, although I imagine they will want polish and work to release this one with the most and best content as possible.

Nothing is really "necessary". Sony sees an opportunity to re-release a game to coincide with the Last of Us television show. Thats really all there is to it. I assure you that you are not going to be forced to buy it.
Naughty Dog gets more experience working on PS5, the team gets stuff to do while other projects are in pre-production, cross-promotion synergy with the show, a campaign to release alongside Factions 2.0, and a new coat of paint (both visuals and gameplay) for a beloved story.
Take your pick as to which justification you most prefer

If people like Factions 2 and haven't played the SP games, it'd boost those sales too. So releasing it first makes sense in that context.
Do find it weird TLOU2 isn't part of the new PS+. Feels like they might do a DC version + Factions. Regardless I wonder where the remake falls into with regards to Factions. Unless it gets bundled in. Curious to see how it plays out.
To get people to buy it again and to give new fans from the TV show a chance to play something that looks and plays like Part II.
because the gameplay and level design of the original game is pretty basic by today's standards
GoW in September & TLoU1R in November could work. To my knowledge, I don't think Jason is anticipating a GoW delay.
it would be pretty dumb to release the ps4 version on Pc instead of just the new remake.
