Apple has tapped Chernobyl Emmy nominee Jared Harris and Halt and Catch Fire grad Lee Pace to lead the cast of space drama Foundation.

Based on Isaac Asimov's novel series of the same name, Foundation chronicles the epic saga of The Foundation, a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it.

Harris will star as Hari Seldon, a mathematical genius who predicts the demise of the empire. Pace is set as Brother Day, the current Emperor of the Galaxy.

I love the Foundation books but I am a little skeptical that these relatively cerebral books will find a big TV audience.

"Moar sex and violence!"

Jared Harris was amazing in Chernobyl and it is hard to picture a better Hari Seldon.

I've kind of settled into the notion that Foundation will never make the translation to screen in any compelling way, but you've certainly got my attention with Harris.

This will break me. I don't think it is unfilmable but there is a 99% chance that this will be mutilated beyond recognition.

So the madmen are really going to do it?

Well, good luck Apple, Foundation is pretty much unfilmable but let's see what happens.

Awesome, love Foundation, can't wait... "David S. Goyer serves as showrunner..."—oh no.

Jared Harris and Lee Pace are wonderful and I'm thrilled about them but remember that David S. Goyer is behind this project. Not one known for nuanced, well written sci-fi. He's more the "let's make it dark" kind. Maybe this will be different, who knows but I can't say seeing his name on this excites me.

My dream would be all of it getting adapted. Robot, prelude, foundations end, and connect it all.

The end of FE still fucks me up

I'm a huge scifi fan, but I read the Wiki description of one or two of the novels and they seem so dry.

Man I'm already seeing the fucking signs on the wall with the wording of the synopsis in the press release and the fact that the emperor is the second character they cast. At least Emmerich didn't get to make a movie out of it I guess, I need something positive out of this other than the fact that they got two amazing actors to sign up for this.

I heard that the series is going to focus on Sheldon's life, not the actual Foundation events after his death.

Maaaan. That better not be true. They could make an amazing semi anthology series out of this with each season jumping forward and introducing a new cast and a new "crisis".

Lord of the Rings is a high fantasy adventure set to the backdrop of war with escalating battle scene after battle scene and people called it a bunch of boring walking.

Foundation by comparison is like slow paced Star Trek episodes tuned down even lower. I have no idea how you adapt it for a popular audience. I love it all the same.

edit: to take a slightly less defeatist attitude here, some of Game of Thrones best scenes, if not all, are ultimately people sitting in a room talking, and that Shakespeare fellow knew a thing or two about this so I don't want to come across like it can't be done, but considering the showrunner I'll assume the worst and always be willing to be pleasantly surprised.

Lee Pace won me over in Halt and Catch Fire. that show got so good as it progressed.

Harris has always been great.

as we all know wiki descriptions are the best way to consume literary classics

the 2nd best method is a show by the writer of batman v superman

Oh jeez this is the dream pairing I didn't know I needed. Love them both, especially Harris.

I could do worse than re-reading these classics. Prolly been 25 years.

Man that sounds great, which reminds me that I have to start reading the books which have been collecting dust.

I love Foundation but don't have apple plus so i'll be hearing about this 2nd hand...

Don't know how they're gonna pull it off - this and the new Dune coming out would be a real neat way to kick off renewed interest in some different kind of Sci-Fi

From the casting it sounds like they are going to merge 500 years down into 1. That does not bode well.

This should really have been an anthology. Have 4-5 episodes in each time period.

Having finished my annual read-thorugh of Robots/Galactic Empire/Foundation, the characters confirmed thus far seem at odds with the established timeline. Four cannon characters amidst a bunch of new characters. Seems we'll see aspects of Prelude and Forward the Foundation integrated into the Foundation proper.

The inclusion of Eto Demerezel is interesting and I wonder if his true nature will the big reveal at the end of the first season.

This is gonna be a disaster.
Foundation is great but it's both mysogenistic and white privileged as fuck.
You can neither "throne" it nor make it inclusive. It's not what the Books are about...

I reckon they can tackle with problematic areas of the Foundation books effectively while successfully adapting the overarching narrative of the development of the 1000 year plan.

Probably but rightly so?
The series is an ego trip. You're in for Asimov having his fun.

Practically,
There is no ending to the books. We were left with a cliffhanger and an ominous doubt.

Guys adapting The Culture are better off if the budget is enough. High concept vuth with relatable stuff happening.

Foundation? That's gonne be tortured into a family friendly GoT...

Foundation as a series...

You either gotta ditch a lot of the math talk or find some way to keep people interested while you do the math talk.

Jesus, every time I see a celebrity's name in a thread title I automatically think the next words are gonna be "[...] is a rapist/sexual predator" Very glad this wasn't the case. Doubt this is gonna come out before my free apple TV sub runs out, but I might not mind paying for something like this.

Its been a while since I read the series, probably time for a re-read.

Not too hopeful for an adaptation, but im open to be surprised.
