hey so I wanna build a pc that's capable of running at higher resolutions but the nvidia cards are so fucking expensive right now. Thinking of just getting a amd card but have had experience with them.

Depends, what kind of video card do you have right now?

EDIT: Jesus they're still $500? Not worth it for that much.

It's a great GPU for 1080p. However it's massively overpriced just like Nvidia GPUs, almost double it's original MSRP. It's hard to get one under $ 450.00 usd. Definitely not worth it at current prices.

At MSRP it definitely is, it's a nice midrange GPU, but right now, no GPU is worth the asking price. If you can, wait it out till next round of Nvidia GPUs (or AMD, not sure what they have in the pipelines). At $500 it's a pass IMO, that's 2x over MSRP.

I picked up a used PC the other day with a 480 and it plays everything great @ 1080p that I've tried so far. I paid $425 for the setup. I think the 580 costs more than what I paid for everything from what I see lol. GPU prices are too crazy nowadays.

There are some rx 580s and GTX 1060s in US newegg for $400. I may consider that price if they include a game (what's funny is that they are giving you a free pcie riser for mining with one of these rx 580s), but not $500. I would be looking for used cards in craigslist before I pay $500 for these.

Got mine today for 429€. Will sell my old gpu for around 200 so it is an okay price. The 580 so far is really good for 1080p gaming. Rocks everything on ultra.

New nvidia cards are rumored to be coming at the end of the month or early April. Wait or you might end up mad that you bought an overpriced last gen gpu.

Honestly if you can find one an RX480 will do just as well. The 580 only gets about a 5-10% boost over the 480 but it's the same architecture. I paid $220 for mine in April of last year.

Definitely not worth its current $500 price. Regarding performance, you can check some of our PC Performance Analysis articles as we have included an RX580 (in short, don't expect to run the latest games with 60fps on max settings even at 1080p).

At MSRP it's a great card, better than the GTX 1060 overall. At current prices no mid-range or higher GPU is worth it.

If by 'higher resolutions' you mean higher than 1080p, the 580 wouldn't be well suited for that either. You'd be looking at the Vega cards if sticking away from Nvidia.

RX 580 8 GB is worth getting if you can get it for $250 (around the MSRP for the 8 GB version), but it is a huge rip-off at $500 lol. For $500, you should be getting a 1070 Ti.

I bought an RX 480 8GB around release, for the MSRP. It was tremendous bang for the buck then. But $500? No, that's far too expensive.

I was gonna get a new card as I have 670' s in SLI that are showing their age. Even used GPUs are stupid value for money. Congrats Microsoft on a Xbox One X purchase.

$500 for $200 cards? He'll even 970s are like $300. F crypto.

Loving my XB1X by the way. Silent.

There are 1060 6GB on Newegg under $400 aren't there? $500 for a 580 would be insane.

$500 is what the GTX 1080 originally launched at.

Buying a video card right now seems like a really bad idea.

You can keep an eye on the hardwareswap subreddit for people selling good condition ones for cheaper, but regardless buying a GPU now isn't a smart thing to do period.

They were a great value at $200-240. My 4gb 480 that I got for $200 back in the day (with Civ VI) has held up admirably at 1080p.

At $500+? I hate to say it, but not even close to being worth it.

https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/

Refresh that link a few times a day (set to "New" posts instead of "Top" or "Hot"). There's several deals a week that get you near MSRP.

A 580 for US$500 is a terrible deal. There's frequent sales on *entire prebuilt PCs* with a 1060 or 580 for about US$600-700.

Camp that subreddit until you find a GTX 1070 - that's the least you should consider getting for the price you're listing. In a more just world, US$500 is actually the MSRP for a GTX 1080 and that's what we'd be suggesting.

In terms of new GPus these days, I think the only one worth its price is the GT 1030 at $80.

All the 580s I see are around 500

Don't do it for $500, that's just crazy. Sad to say but the bitcoin mining shit is fucking up pc gaming unless you go for premade systems and I never prefer anyone go that route because you should learn to build a PC and that allows people to maintain it over getting some tech support from warranty that could stretch out for so long rather than fixing yourself in the same day.

Can't you get a 1070ti for around $450??

That's what I paid on Amazon a few months ago

I'm sure hoping the bottom falls out of the miners tbh I need to upgrade my 2gb 950ti, it's doing ok on most games at 1080p 30fps, but I wanna push it now that I've built a Ryzen system

Not at their current markup. They're exceptional cards for mining (great hash rate for the power consumption), but there's no way I'd spend $500 on one for gaming.

Though if you're vigilant they can be had for 350 to 400 once in a blue moon.

I have one In my laptop. Runs pretty much everything on high/ultra at 1080p@60.
