Sonic the Hedgehog was designed to be a cool character as part of his appeal. So do you think that image has been succesful due to his attitude and actions:

No character can go through as many failures and the kind of bizarre existence Sonic has on the internet and still be popular without being way past cool.

He's kinda like the TMNT and somehow manages to be a different kind of cool for each new generation

He strikes me as too much of a try-hard. Also, I can't help but feel that he's setting kids who idolize him up for a world of disappointment when they end up coming off as complete douchebags by acting like Sonic.

The question is inherently subjective, of course. Sonic was designed to be cute/cool to children in the 90s. The American cartoons decreased the cute factor and increased the 90s attitude. Adventure era was designed to be cool to children in the early 2000s. By that metric, yeah he was cool. Modern Sonic places much less emphasis on being "cool", he's more of a comedic cartoon character, which from what I've seen IS more resonate with modern day kids. So, I guess they would consider him cool?

So, yeah, he's a cool character for what he's supposed to be.

Got nothing on Shadow, though. heh heh

I feel like the answer is pretty objectively yes. The character's appeal is what's kept him relevant for 3 decades even in the times where the critical reception for the games was terrible.

If Sonic wasn't a cool character then the series would be completely dead. Most video game characters don't survive 1 failure. Sonic has survived how many? That's on the back of how cool his character is.

Tails weirdly enough has remained cool throughout most of the series. Solid design that hasn't been ruined when he made the transition to 3D.

Sonic is an anthropomorphic hedgehog that runs really fast, eat's chili dogs, collects infinity stones and turns super sayian

Sonic maybe a little "too cool" in an early 90s corporate mascot kinda way but yeah, Sonic is actually cool

I'd say he's more "fun" than cool, but yeah his design is absolutely great.
One could even argue that his "cool" design and persona is what kept the franchise alive/relevant for so long, after so many duds.

He was cool before he got such long arms and legs and floppy spines and green eyes. He's upsetting to look at.

Yeah? It's one of the biggest reasons the series is still around despite its constant failures.

I never played any of the Sonic games and I think he looks really cool. So I guess that's the ultimate test, how it looks to an outsider.

Cool to who?

Kid's in the 90's? He was corporately engineered at the time to appeal to kids and heavily marketed in a playground fight manner against competition to justify them only owning one system because that was the norm, so yeah, he's probably cool to them.

Modern day kids like zoomers? Does he say "I'm gamin' ", "poggers", or "Let's gooo gamers!!!!" ?? If not, no, he's not cool.

Cool isn't the same thing anymore.

In context of comparing him to his contemporaries from the 16-bit generation, absolutely.

In a modern setting? No, and it's compounded by the awful friends cast. The only thing somewhat "cool" about the modern sonic brand is the management has become kind of self-aware of its lameness, and even that has a bit of "fellow kids" energy
