Recently i have been discussing with a couple of freinds both on discord as well as for a 2 hour long prediction video on Reverse Flash vs Goku Black - the upcoming DEATH BATTLE, it got me thinking about Reverse Flash and the points made by pepole in that discussion - the point is - the Reverse Flash is one of the most evil, petty and at the same time almost tragic villains in the DC Universe:

Dangerous-Metas-Reverse-Flash.jpg

For those who don't know Reverse Flash's backstory - basically in his orginal backstory he was a Museum Manager for the Flash Museum that was obessed with the Flash so he decided to emulate his idol by literally getting plastic surgery to have a face resembling Barry Allen and then even creating the Negative Speed Force in an attempt to replicate Barry Allen's powers - he decided to go back in time only to find out that he would end up becoming the Flash's greatest enemy - the Reverse Flash and the realization that he is only purpose of life is to become the hated enemy of the hero that he orginally respected so much mentally broke him to the point that he realized - if this were to be my fate then so be it and decided if destiny forced him to become the Flash's most hated enemy, that he would go to the ends of the earth to become the enemy that the Flash truly and utterly hates.

There is also a twist in that if the Reverse

While - IT WAS ME, BARRY is more of a joking inteperation of how Eobard ruins Barry Allen's life in the worst way possible but it still is 100% in canon for him. Eobard is a monster - plain and simple and the lengths he has gone to make Barry Allen's life a living hell:

  • Killing Barry's mom leaving his dad to be framed for it
  • Erasing Barry's childhood friend from existance so he would grow up without any friends
  • Pushing kid Barry down a flight of stairs
  • Causing an electrical fire that burned down Barry's first house
  • Leaving Barry's back door open so his dog could run out and get hit by a car
  • Killing Barry's wife Iris
  • Killing August's brother, leading him on his path to becoming Godspeed
  • Leading Hunter Zolomon on his path to becoming Zoom which would cause further issues with the Flash Family
  • Made an ice sculpture of Barry's dead wife while fighting him...on the same day Barry was supposed to marry someone else and move on from Iris' death

He's also done some awful things including:

  • Erasing his own brother from existance in the Reboot because he disliked his brother interrupting his studies
  • Killed his entire family
  • Killed a reporter's fiance and every man she ever dated
  • Made advancements on a reporter and when she rejected him - went back in time and traumatized her so much that she became a mute and forced her to be institutionalized for the rest of her life
  • Has broken the timeline numerous times
  • Comitted so many crimes that his sentance would be 500 years.
Yes there are DC Villains that have done worse but with the Reverse Flash - he makes it so personal. He is not after the destruction of the universe or to rule a planet - he just wants to make Barry Allen's life as miserable and as awful as he can and in a sick sort of way - it makes sense. The thing is with other evil charcters like Lex and Joker is that they are not solely defined by their relationships with their respective heroes - with Reverse Flash it is 100% the case - making Barry Allen's life as awful as humanly possible is really his only means of exisistance - he is the only way he can find some sort of purpose in his life - without that drive to make Barry Allen's life worse - he is nothing but a cosmic mistake - someone who should have never come into being who makes everyone else's lives more miserable just by being around him - he is nothing without Barry Allen.

I think ultimately what makes Reverse Flash an effective villain despite how goofy the concept is - is that he will go to any extreme, any length to make just this one person and his family feel constant suffering. That's what makes Reverse Flash one of the most evil DC Villains in my opinion.

There's petty and then there's Reverse Flash petty.

I remember at one point he did all those things to force Barry to be a better hero but I think it was after Wally was the Flash they went with the full mental breakdown.

That's Zoom aka Hunter Zolomon who wants Wally to be a better hero

Probably, but his actions and motivations feel so divorced and deattached from reality its hard to actually see him that way

that and he didnt ruin comics like joker did with killing joke so on a meta level ill always just see him as less bad

It's hard to decide if he or Joker is more evil, since I feel like Joker would do some of the same sorta things if he had those powers. Though I kinda feel like if you gave Joker those powers he might just go back and forth killing young Batman and letting him live because he can't decide if life's more fun with or without him.

Until one of them breaks into your apartment to sit in your lazy boy and sip wine, they won't be the most evil.

So.Cal.
I dunno... The Anti-Monitor destroyed a near infinite number of universes/time-lines.
That's like taking an infinite amount of lives.

Yeah, this is pretty fucking grim. Emperor Joker was almost a surrealist comedy story most of the time, but then you have "And I Must Scream" Batman being tortured to death and eaten alive in an endless loop as his closest friend is forced to listen helplessly to it. It's, uh... It's a lot. It's on the short list of most fucked up and affecting things I've ever seen in a mainstream comic.

Just the thought of trying to scream without having a mouth... Overinflating your own face like a balloon until it rips open... Nope. No, thank you. Nopenopenope.

"Listening to my friend disappear in chunks..." is such a line.

I'm sorry, did he just shake her until she was mute? Or was that supposed to represent him going through her timeline and messing things up?
The way the comic is put together is genius really. You have a few pages and frames explaining what's supposed to happen, followed by Thawne changing it, then immediately snapping back to the new timeline. So what you are seeing there is him turning the girl who turned him down into a mute, and then the immediate consequence of that in this new timeline "I never fell in love." The whole comic is basically Thawne narrating his life while he himself makes changes to it, and you have these abrupt shifts in the story when it happens. Flashpoint was amazing.

Regardless of who's more evil, Reverse Flash's characterisation - despite the effort of authors like Waid and Johns - just feels too thin for me to care.

He hates Barry. That's pretty much where he begins and ends. Joker hates Batman, too, but is still enough of a character in his own right that he remains interesting (depending on the writer).

I didn't follow the Flash TV show(s) so maybe they made Thawne more interesting?

Thawne being tied to Barry handicaps him.

Zoom will always be the better character to me, because his motivation was legit scary. He really wanted to help Wally, and thought he was doing a good thing

Yeah Zoom worked better than Thawne, he was legit terrifying and interesting, Thawne is just petty for the sake of it. The TV shows they're flipped though, fuck how the show did Zoom dirty

but Inertia? He takes the crown for truly being the biggest piece of shit

Yeah I like a villain so terrible that even other villains won't fuck with them. Not Dr. Light level, but Inertia is a good bar to hold

One thing I love about the Rogues are their ethics. Like never kill a Speedster.

I'm sure you've read it, but Final Crisis: Rogues' Revenge is fantastic.

Best Final Crisis book no one ever read was Final Crisis: RUN. Find out what happens when a F list supervillian pisses off EVERYBODY.

Of course. He jerked Barry off at superspeed just to fuck with his date.

...What? Are you telling me Reverse Flash is such an asshole that he Speed Force raped Barry Allen in public off just to embarrass him on a date with a "jizzed in my pants" moment?
That is... I take it back. The ice sculpture thing was small potatoes.

Which villains refused to work with Dr. Light?

Also yeah Rogues Revenge is great. I love this panel:

It was so bad Superman had to take Batman's memories of being killed as he was traumatized beyond help. Yikes.

After Infinite Crisis there was like a year where everyone would mention Dr. Light and say "nah that guy rapes". There was one issue where he shows up and attempts to a job but Cheetah jumps him before he could come after her

Being a Flash villain is about seeing how much trauma you can inflict before she traps you in your own personal hell

Smarter Flash villains keep their crimes light to avoid this

So does he have interesting motivations beyond "I'm just fucking evil"?

His main reason is to fuck with his idol, Barry Allen, The Flash. After trying to be The Flash he fucked up and has been stuck in en endless paradox of if he kills Barry Allen then he will never exist. He can kill Barry but Barry is a constant in the DC Omniverse (meaning a bunch of different universes that can expand to "infinite" universes) and if he kills Barry then he will disappear and the Omniverse will be messed up if he kills Barry Allen.

So what does Eobard Thawne do? He just fucks with Barry Allen over the pettiest shit.

But what makes Eobard Thawne interesting? How he goes about in being so petty and fucking with Barry Allen. He concocts these plans just to fuck with Barry Allen. Every other villain will just brush shit off and continue on their way but Eobard? He sticks with his plan to fuck over Barry Allen.

There is another one..... Zoom aka Hunter Zolomon. His motivation is to make heroes better. He is a Wally West (the best The Flash) villain first and foremost but he has been known to fuck with other heroes to make them a better hero.
