Yeah, I know, weird title... But hear me out: I've always been an Xbox fan ever since I bought a 360 back in '10. I bought it because I was primarily a Wii owner and I thought I was missing waaay too much. I loved the Wii, but the HD games that were coming out were experiences I was not able to get only with my wee little Wii. So, the 360 was my gateway into a new gaming world, and holy shit, I WAS missing way too much.

I've never really liked Sony's exclusives up until then and had never had a Sony console before, so the 360 was an obvious choice for me. And, from then on, I have always mantained a balance between my Japanese gaming fix with Nintendo's machines (WiiU/3DS/Switch) and the more westernized approach that Xbox brought to the table. So I got an Xbox One on release day and never looked back.

In 2017, Gamepass was released, and I was in for the ride. What an amazing idea, this is. I love it. I spread its word. Gamepass is fucking revolutionary. I saw its potential and started saving a lot of money due to gamepass. Outright stopped buying games, because the selection is incredible and the exclusives release day one... so yeah, this was the greatest boon to my wallet that I've ever seen. Gamepass is a gamechanger.

Fast forward to 2020 - I got a Series X day one and I love love love it. It's an AMAZING console, quiet as hell, a powerful sexy beast. Don't know if it's apparent, but I fucking love it.

However, I've been eyeing some Sony games for a while; I mean, Sony KILLED it during the PS4 era and I never played most of their exclusives... so I always felt like I was missing something, again. However, due to having never owned a Sony machine before, it was kinda easy to ignore the urge and live on... until the TLOUII 60fps patch. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. TLOU has always been the franchise I was most curious about, having never really played it, and it always seemed to be right into my alley, being about a near future dystopia and whatnot.

Thing is. PS5 is fucking expensive, specially in Brazil. I mean, it costs A LOT. Specially in the hands of scalpers... but, coincidentally, the same day the 60 FPS patch was announced, I saw that a retailer had received a batch of PS5 and it was costing the official price... So temptation was huge. I bought it. I fucking clicked the button and bought it. I've been loving it ever since, it's a great console (although it's ugly as fucking hell), and the games are sooo sooo soooo good. Like, out of this world good. I'm dipping my toes in Sony's world, and there are so many great games to explore...

Thanks to all the money I saved due to gamepass.

You see, gaming is expensive in Brazil. REALLY expensive. I have a comfortable situation and a great job, which helps me mantain my gaming hobby; I have a monthly budget for it. Gamepass helped me save a loooot of money, like a lot a lot. Due to saving all this money, I was able to get a PS5 and experience a whole new gaming world.

So yeah, Microsoft actually got me into Sony's ecossystem.

Thanks Gamepass, you're amazing. You keep being amazing, forever, please.

Having multiple platforms is a luxury but it is definitely cool to have all the consoles and ways to play. Gamepass saves me money so that I can buy more games, DLC, etc. I love it. The PS5 is dope as well. awesome stuff.

That's a good point you raise there OP, GP does save money over the course of a year. The savings will be more significant from winter onwards with all of the exclusives launching straight into GP as well.

What's funny about this thread is I also did not realize I have not purchased a single Xbox game for well over a year yet I have had new games to play throughout the year. So my money also has gone to PS5 and switch games.

That's great! I'm happy you managed to snag both consoles and at MSRP. Enjoy both and i'd recommend Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted, Gravity Rush series as well.

As someone in both ecosystems as well, it would be amazing to see MS' studios step up to the level of Sony's 1st party offerings. Here's hoping we see just that here in the next 18-24 months as their new acquisitions start paying off.

Microsoft official stats like to highlight that gamers who are using GamePass are actually spending more, or something like that. Obviously that was not your case and it's not mine either : since the beginning of my subscription in January 2019, I have not spent a single dime into the Xbox ecosystem outside of the Game Pass sub. I do turn on my Xbox more often than before GamePass though !

Exactly how I see GP. It saves me money on the Xbox side so I have more to spend on PS. I don't even pay any money to sub to GP which is even better.

Once a year i purchase one call of duty from the Xbox store and never return to it again until the next year thanks to Gamepass. So I can definitely see the save money aspect.

Gamepass will definitely help the market grow for all involved parties. Sure, Gamepass is trying to eat anyone's market share but also it has some "externalities" in the sense that now some gamers can play more games with less money and some of those might use part of that money to buy stuff from competitors. I think one to the key things about MS lately is that they're not competing any longer with Sony directly but they're trying to differentiate from them. They're not into the business of creating the Gow of War killer anyway, they're doing different things than the rest of the competition. And so there's more room for everyone.

Enjoy the new console OP! Good read.

What's funny about this thread is I also did not realize I have not purchased a single Xbox game for well over a year yet I have had new games to play throughout the year. So my money also has gone to PS5 and switch games.

This is me as well. All my gaming budget goes to the PS5 and Switch. With more big titles coming to Gamepass at launch, plus all of MS's and Beth's titles, there's no reason for me to buy Xbox games anymore.

It's so nice to know that come November, I can trial BF2042 for 10 hours and play FH5/Halo thanks to GP

It's really worth owning both consoles, you can't go wrong

When I read the title I thought: "Oh, this thread will be a blood bath". But it was a really good read. Great bait, fellow Brazillian :)

I always wonder about those statistics. Anecdotally it seems absurd, personally I have bought one XSX game this generation, most of my friends that bought next-gen Xbox consoles have bought none. We had a poll here indicating something similar. My working theory is that those statistics are probably talking about money spent, games played, time played within the Xbox ecosystem which is a less impressive claim because all it really indicates is that people that subscribe to Xbox Game Pass are spending a higher proportion of their gaming time on that platform rather than another.

Great to hear you get to experience the best of both worlds. I, for one, own both PlayStation and Xbox consoles so i know how you feel right now. Nintendo, however, is not my thing, well, maybe during my childhood i was helluva addicted to Pokemon Yellow on my Gameboy. But anyway, i'm happy for you. There's plenty of great games coming out in the future, so be on the lookout! :)

Congrats! As someone who recently tore himself a new asshole to get both consoles, I can understand - Gamepass has been a godsend while having access to PS5 exclusives like Ratchet and Clank has been a blast.

That's actually a great story! I clicked this expecting some system warring crap again, but I enjoyed every word. :)

Bwahaha, brilliant!

Enjoy! Completely missing out on the PS4 means you guys lots of great games to go through!

Enjoy the premise of the OP very much. Very interesting angle. Game Pass is saving me ton of money which theoretically could be put towards another console ecosystem. I'm open to getting a PS5 at some point. I'm in no rush though. Xbox giving me all I can handle right now.

I completely understand this line of thinking. I have like $30 sitting in my Steam account that has been sitting there since February.
It's also how I justified buying a new VR headset.

This is legitimately great. Super cool that the current landscape of the industry has allowed you to dip your toes in the waters of both ecosystems.
