HROT on Steam

HROT is a single-player retro FPS set in a small socialist country neighboring Soviet Union (Czechoslovakia) after an unspecified disaster in 1986. Those times were dark and terrifying and so is the game.

Didn't realize this was releasing today until I saw a friend playing it on Steam. I really liked the demo, and the main game is exceeding it so far!

However, it is quite difficult! Very Hard was a bit too tough for me on the Demo, so I knocked it down to Hard here, but I'm still having some difficulties near the end of level 2. I'm not sure whether I'll knock it down to normal or try to power through (knowing that the later levels will just get harder).

Some of the environments in this game are surprisingly pretty, and some of the enemies are weird and gross and surprising in the best ways possible. I may have to put my playthrough of Celeste on pause for a bit, because I'm really looking forward to playing more HROT this weekend.

If anyone plays this, let me know what you think and how long it is.

Impressions above. Shooting and movement feel really good, though (so far) I don't think it quite has the movement complexity of something like Quake. There's good depth to the enemies (some real tricksters in there), environments, and weapons to make up for it though. In many ways, this is an Arena Shooter with Survival Horror sensibilities, so I wouldn't go in expecting a power fantasy like "Quake inspired" may put in your head. Health and ammo can be real tight.

The release today is just Episode 1 (of I think 3 or 4 that are planned, so this is basically early access), and I've been told that Episode 1 has 8 levels, but I can't confirm that myself yet. I'd guess a minimum of 4 hours to complete Episode 1 for the first time based on my pace for levels 1 and 2 (and assuming 8 levels is correct), but it could easily be twice that or more if you're going for secrets or playing on harder difficulties. There's also an Endless mode (horde style) that could easily add a couple more hours based on what I saw in the demo, but I haven't had a chance to touch it in the main game yet to see how much content is there.

Looks pretty nice!
I really like how we are getting a lot of games using this aesthetic now. Tons of nostalgia.

I will have to check this out at some point.
