How far along is the game in development at this point?

Mathijs de Jonge:
We have just successfully completed our beta milestone, which is pretty far along. We're now in the final stages of development. So we are polishing the game and fixing bugs. We are also wrapping up certain aspects of the game, like some of the machines being behind schedule - because it takes an enormous amount of time to build them. We're working on the final cinematic. So, we're really wrapping up. There's still a lot to do with a game of this size and magnitude, but we're in the final stages.

Wow thats way better than I think anyone thought! Maybe they can pull it off for this year, although it will still definitely be challenging.

I saw quite a few issues (visually speaking) that I hope get addressed as the title gets polished across myriad metaphorical grindstones. Because FW looks astounding, the flaws tend to really stick out when I noticed them.

If this is true then I hope more games do this, reveal properly when the devs know they are near completion. We really don't need to wait 2+ years from the reveal to see some proper gameplay (*cough* Elden Ring *cough*)

If they're so far along they should've shown more of the open world. Don't get showcasing an open world game with a hyper linear segment.

For anyone with knowledge of game development, what does that mean? Roughly how much time would a big open world game, if everything is on track as they stated before, still need in the oven?

If I were a betting man, if it's done with the beta stage, it goes gold in October and releases in November?

Still not getting my hopes up for this year, I expect January or February 2022. November 2021 would be a surprise.

Dont rush, just polish it up, aim for the end of the year.
The assumption is that releasing it by the end of this year IS rushing it. Otherwise it would be a Spring 2022 title.
No release date with < 6 months left does not inspire confidence.

But here's hoping!

Generally speaking being past beta phase and given what Mathijs said, a release within the next 6 months would be typical.

Barring unforeseen circumstances. The only reason a solid date wasn't given is because dev has been a little weird because of Covid so it's hard to predict. They just want to be sure. If that never happened, you can bet a release date would have been locked in by now. They're just covering their bases.

Honestly, I prefer this approach over the never-ending cycle of announce release date—> move release date —> immediately announce new release date.

It takes unneeded public pressure off of the devs, it keeps fan anticipation more grounded, and avoids hype cycles that set unrealistic expectations that most games can't live up to. Win-win for everyone except probably the publishers who will always want a release date written in blood.

And then they get a month or so to ship day 1 patch.

I fully expect Horizon and Halo to be delayed again and it's okay.

Well Halo is a bit more rough cause Xbox is still waiting for its big showcase but I'll take a better game over a rushed one.

I assumed they wouldn't have a dedicated State of Play for a game not likely to come out in the next 4-5 months at most.

But it's nice to get confirmation (barring unexpected circumstances, of course)
