We're almost 4 years into this decade but I can't help feel that romantic music is dying. Do you agree or not? Or has romantic music taken another form? Do love songs still storm the charts like they did before, or not anymore? What could've contribute to the decreasing popularity of this type of music if you think it is declining?

Also, what is your favourite decade for love songs? I know it's hard to pick one so I'll let you choose up to 3 of your liking. Feel free to share your favorite love songs and maybe how you met your significant other/made sweet, sweet longing stares at each other/other memorable memories, romantic or otherwise, with these love songs attached.

So, a quick tour of the decades of love songs! (In the following posts because era won't let me put in multiple vids)

50s and 60s - I put them in one poll choice because the poll wouldn't let me add one more choice. I think 50s were full of beautiful harmonics which spilled into the 60s.

80s - I think this was really the time when everyone tried their hand at love songs. Once a prog band drummer virtuoso? Now a hit-churning-chart-topping machine. Also, new wave. This was also the decade were singing went another notch with belters appearing left and right.

10s - there were still some holdouts to the old love songs at this point but it's on life support, only the big names most of the time successfully get away with it, and it's great since mostly they put their own spin and signature into it.

This will be a fun thread to check! I'm sure there will be lots of cool songs to check out.

But for me, I voted 90s and that's personally being carried by Whitney Houston. There's so much good stuff but Whitney Houston is another level. Her version of I Will Always Love You still gets to me.

my heart tells me its the 80s. But that's mostly because I fell in love the first time in the early 90s and the music of the 80s was still very present everywhere.

50/60 is the most naive look at it and that is kinda nice. Later on it feels too fabricated, 10s and 20s indie scene has a melancholic or pessimistic look at it which I personally like. See Julia Jacklin above.

Oops sorry I thought you meant all of the decades.

But I still wouldn't call weyes blood and alvvaus unpopular
The other songs I've listed are worldwide popular hits that still play on the radio, I agree Weyes Blood and Alvvays are popular but they have no songs as mainstream popular as the other songs here. That doesn't mean they're not as good or better though, there's a reason I put them there :)

WTF, like 9 out of 10 videos can't be watched on this website.
At this point you would think people have seen it enough to put a link with the embed so people know what they're clicking on. I never click on the 'Video unavailable, Watch on YouTube' links.

Silly question maybe, but how do I post links to show up that way instead of the (attempted) embedded video?
Just post the URL by itself. You can use the Preview function to see how it looks before posting.

OP Oliver James , can you switch to just posting the youtube link instead of embedding them? Every video is Video Unavailable and we have no idea what songs you're talking about. Pasting the YT URL straight into the message area without using Embeds at least shows us what songs you're talking about.

Like this:

Anyways, I answered 70s and 90s because those are my favorites.

It's the 70s for me.

The population of string instruments mixed with heavy bass and the newness of synths were becoming dominant in popular music, and the result was a Disco and R&B that felt really orchestral in its progression and melodies, which just lends so well to a sense of sweetness and romance to my ears.

Add to that the 70s being era where lyricism was allowed to be explicit but nuance and ornamentation were still encouraged.

One of my favorite songs from the era has to be from the divine miss Minnie Riperton. "Can You Feel What I'm Saying?" from her album A Romantic Fantasy Set to Music (I mean, the title alone tells you!).

- YouTube

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

First, we learned how to care
Magical dreams, midnight Summer air
Wouldn't it be nice to find that someone so warm to share?
Would I care?
Maybe someone to love for a lifetime.

The pen was penning, ok? And the way Minnie's vocals climb into total euphoria in the end, just…so good.

I was gonna put her into the list with "Lovin' You" but about her orchestrations, the movie Us gave me a newfound appreciation of her music. I know this song from a commercial from ages ago but I finally had a title for it thanks to Peele's film.

This complaint is about hetero love songs. LGBT love songs is thriving relative to past decades.

but I dunno, make the future seem more hopeful and you'll probably get more love songs

All these kinds of questions are meaningless to me because there's great stuff everywhere and everywhen. For example your current Era somehow didn't even mention Arlo Parks and she's got the most romantic album I've heard in awhile (and a newer one on the way or maybe out already?)

50s and 60s were great, but there were so many successful love songs in the 80s that it even convinced the hard rock and metal bands to do power ballads.

I feel like mainstream pop singers are almost always releasing love songs, but they just aren't that memorable, usually.

And if you dip a little bit into smaller bands or musicians that aren't as mainstream but still successful, there's a lot you'll find. Example:

- YouTube

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Aveena's music makes me fall into a daze.
