Gyro aiming confirmed for Horizon: Forbidden West
Jibb Smart:
@everyone, Fortnite now has gyro on all supported platforms and flick stick. Epic hired me to design and implement the new controls. This means: - Works on PS5, PS4, Switch, Android, and PC (if you have a PS5 or PS4 controller plugged in)
- Gyro Modifier button can be set to Disable, Trackball, or Invert, independently in each axis
- Vertical Camera Reset button
- Choose what aim modes / build modes activate gyro
- Touch to activate/deactivate gyro on mobile - Natural sensitivity scale
- Choose between Player and Local space gyro (Player Space is default controllers; Local space is default for handheld)
- Native flick stick
- JSM-style acceleration
- JSM-style smoothing and tightening - and more!
There are always more features that could be added, but I hope you find this to significantly raise the bar for native gyro controls.
I know folks don't like being pinged unless they're being asked for specifically, but I just wanted to make sure no one misses this. I'm probably biased, but I do think this could be huge. Wildly popular cross-play competitive shooter gets advanced gyro controls and native flick stick on all applicable platforms, and they're making a big deal out of it with marketing material, including an in-game video (mine!) highlighting the features and encouraging players to try them out.
I'm tagging all of you because I'd really like your help: showing people what's possible with these controls, helping people find settings that work well for them, sharing your enthusiasm, and engaging with people with patience and grace. I think these things have always been true of the Gyro Gaming community, and I'm so grateful for that! Let's continue to be that kind of community as millions encounter gyro controls for the first time.
I'm praying this update works well (millions can always find bugs somewhere), is well received (players see the potential and embrace it), and is influential (we see more of this in other games).

Hopefully this inspires Nintendo to follow suit with Splatoon 3 regarding flick stick. I'm also hopeful that Apex Legends will do the same. The rest of the industry is finally doing what Nintendoes. Now Microsoft might be forced to join in.
Thank you for this. Any suggestions on easy games that I can "train" with?Try something 3d, maybe has platforming with things to collect, and a bit of aiming. Just try a game that is low pressure, and don't give up and run back to normal controls. It takes some practice to adjust, imagine playing dual analog with inverted when you're used to non inverted. Imagine learning dual analog for the first time when all games were only one analog with lock on or something.
I used a open world game, Saints Row 4, it had platforming, aiming (guns), and the orb collecting which was perfect for me since it combined platforming and aiming to fall or glide towards the orbs. I spent a lot of time looking for and collecting the orbs while adjusting the gyro settings to my comfort.Thank you for this. Any suggestions on easy games that I can "train" with?
The original Halo is a good first game, if you can configure Steam Input, or JoyShockMapper for it. The downside is that there's no mixed kb mouse/controller input on PC, so you need to map the left stick to WASD. But, the fundamentals of aiming and shooting at enemies lends the game really well to gyro.Thank you for this. Any suggestions on easy games that I can "train" with?
This is brilliant news. A big game like this supporting it could encourage other games to follow suit. This is huge, just posted by Jibb Smart in the Gyro Gaming Discord!
I might have to play Fortnite again, for the first time since it launched...
