EDIT: Also, almost all games that can't be uninstalled can not be reinstalled again even if you somehow manage to delete their data making that game completely unplayable.

I had an issue with Wasteland 3 not being able to install about 4 months ago. What happened was I had the game installed, and an update came out for it and the download failed with this error: 0x87E00017

I then couldn't uninstall the game or re-download the game. It gave me the same error trying to re-download it, and a similar error trying to uninstall it from the Apps control panel or the Xbox app.

I spent the next few days googling that error code and trying dozens of "fixes". Nothing worked.

I finally contacted MS support and spent over 12 hours over several calls (they kept hanging up on me) to get it resolved. I went up about 3 levels in support, had them take control of my PC, the whole thing.

They eventually told me that I needed to completely delete my windows install and reinstall. I told them this wasn't a solution, because if this happened again I wasn't going to keep nuking my entire windows install then spend an entire day getting everything re-installed and having my work systems team have to reconfigure my computer so I can WFH.

Well, I eventually relented, nuked my windows install and spent a day re configuring everything. Wasteland 3 finally installed.

Last week there was an update for Wasteland 3 and it failed to install with the same error. The exact same thing happened. No way to play it, uninstall it or update it with the exact same error codes. That's 45 gigs I can't remove from my PC.

Then it happened to Gears of War 5. Another 100 gigs I can't remove from my PC.

Today I went to play Crusader Kings 3 and noticed it wasn't in my Xbox app game list. I definitely had it installed, and thought that was weird. When I hit the "install" button, I got the same error I got from Gears and Wasteland 3. The game shows up in my Apps control panel, but I can't uninstall it there either, same error.

There was an update for CK3, and I guess the Xbox app tried to download it on its own and that broke it.

Another 5 gigs gone.

Now I have no idea what other games have broken themselves and removed themselves from my Xbox app game list. Windows completely locks down all the folders that the store installs into, so not only can you not manually delete them, but even using apps like SpaceSniffer won't show you where space is being taken up by Windows Store apps. I may have dozens more GBs of locked and uninstallable SDD space being taken up by games that have disappeared from by Xbox App list that I didn't notice.

There are ways to open permissions to these folders, but apparently doing so will definitely break even more games in the Xbox App, so doing that isn't a solution either.

This has gotten completely out of control. Microsoft MUST fix this issue.

Googling finds dozens of hits of people experiencing the same issues and MS's solutions of "resetting the store" and various other boiler-plate responses do not work for any of these people posting the issues.

EDIT:

Here are the fixes I have tried so far (and none of them have fixed the issue)

These are the ones that are off the top of my head. I'll add to this list as I remember more.

Running wsreset.exe to reset the store
Disabling delivery optimization
Using powershell to completely remove the store and reinstall it
Using powershell to completely remove all xbox apps and reinstall them
Using powershell to completely remove an application that stopped working after it failed to download a patch
Checking the registry to make sure that there aren't duplicate drives listed for application install locations
Repairing, resetting and uninstalling the app from the application control panel
Changing my DNS to Google's and and several others
Changing the default install location of apps to all my other drives
Using Revo uninstaller to uninstall the app that will no longer function
Creating a new Windows user and trying to download the games that gave me an error. Still got the error.
Did a full scan of all drives and RAM, and everything is fine
Ran Windows' built in drive cleanup tools

WARNING: Many people jump into this thread and say "just use a USB stick/safe mode and delete the directory"-

Using Safe mode, a USB boot stick or other bypass methods to remove folders in the WinApps directory is extremely dangerous. Doing so will most likely result in your losing the ability to run, install or uninstall ANY Gamepass games. It is definitely not recommended that you do this.

Install Revo Uninstaller and uninstall them with it (this applies to basically every program). It removes everry shitty leftover that usually sticks in your PC, and I had to use it with every shitty PC Game Pass issue I had.

By the way, avoid PC Game Pass, jankiest app I've ever had the chance to use, amateur shit, it is unbeliable that belongs to Microsoft.

You can also force control over the folders if you´re the administrator and then delete them

Had the same issue, and with that i was able to force delete the applications

They need to fix it, but there is a way to do it without reinstall of windows

Sounds terrible. I've had a selection of issues with the Windows store, but luckily I haven't experienced this one. I've unsubbed from PC Game Pass now, so that's one less thing to deal with. I didn't use it much and they increased the price after the beta so it was time to go.

There are several ways to delete apps and files aside from the Xbox app or Control Panel. If push comes to shove you can even just delete the files manually.

I've had this happen in the past . I had to go to apps , find the game and delete it from there.

I've also had numerous updates fail . Very annoying

Wow, that's crazy. I've definitely had some issues with Game Pass on PC, but nothing so bad as what you describe.

The Xbox app really is garbage. I just had an issue where the app wouldn't open. I would just run the games directly but finally had to reinstall it to get it working right. It's really bad.

Yeap, happened to me once, I use a different drive for the games however so in the end I didn't have to reinstall windows.

Yeah it can be a flat out mess. I started just using an extra ssd I had laying around and connecting to via an enclosure.

Man that sounds like a disaster. A stark contrast to how simple it is on consoles. They really need to address it.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT OP.

I also dealt with that shit. I even had to cancel my Game pass sub. For some reason, windows refused to play GP gamess. Wouldn't let me download them from the xbox app. Wouldn't let me download them directly from the store. Fuck. I can't even install the xbox app anymore. The whole windows store is travesty.

Only God knows how many hours I have spent trying to troubleshootthis. I will not reinstall windows. Fuck that. I don't have time for that. GoG and Steam that is.

I've truly tried everything : restarting the store, clearing cache, , messing around with CMD, PowerShell. It's so goddamn frustrating because I was looking to play Halo 4, Doom and DQXIS.

its not permanent. There is a way to delete the windowsapps folders ect. Its tricky but you have to change the security settings on the folder and subfolders then you can delete it.

Yup, I only install GamePass games to an old 2TB mechanical drive for this reason, no way I'm risking GamePass gradually swallowing up valuable NVMe storage.

GamePass is obviously great if you're really looking to game on the cheap and don't mind loosing access to titles once they're removed, but if you can afford to buy games, even if it means waiting for the sales, it's honestly worth the extra money.

Sounds like Game Pass PC alright. The latest thing that happened to me is Halo MCC on Game Pass just failing to launch for no apparent reason when it was working for months. Annoyed the hell out of me so much that I just bought Halo MCC on Steam. No issues and I honestly believe it feels more responsive. I even bought AoE 1/2/3 DE so it's one less reason to use it.

Game Pass is a great service but the PC version needs a total rewrite. At the very least, it should integrate with Steam so you can choose where to download (Windows Store or Steam).

Dumb idea.

Buy a second drive. Leave it mostly unformatted. Create formatted partitions for specific games that are approximately large enough, with some leeway for updates that don't error out.

This shouldn't be necessary and it's unreasonable but it could work.

Honestly Gamepass is just trash on PC.

I never seen so many issues from an dam app until i've downloaded Gamepass and the Xbox app. So many games won't just work due to several reasons. Such as Gears 5, Outer Worlds, Dead Rising, Fallout 76, and so much more. Outer Worlds is by far the worst.. couldn't even install it for some strange reason.

Convinced to just get Gamepass on my Xbox, and just buy the games on my PC separately.

Do you only have the one drive and partition? I've had similar issues with you, but I have multiple drives and multiple partitions, so when I have issues with a crappy UWP title I just have to format the partition. Yep, that's all. Just need to format an entire partition because UWP titles are such trash.

I don't understand how the Xbox/game pass app can be so bad. Especially when you consider it's a Microsoft made app running on a Microsoft made OS.

Again, if a game gets this issue, you cannot play it, uninstall it or reinstall it without completely deleting your entire windows install and reinstalling windows. It doesn't matter what drive or partition it was installed to. The OS itself will not let you play or install it again to any drive or partition.

You can also install linux on a usb drive and boot into it to delete the files. I had a similar issue where some games were stuck on a drive from an old Windows installation and fixed it by doing the linux thing. Hopefully they just fix it and let people delete the files though. You shouldn't have to jump through hoops just to free up some space.

Microsoft is pretty much the king of wonky apps whether it's their inconsistent and poorly designed OS or their own apps. It does not surprise me at all.

Don't take me wrong, they do make a lot of good stuff (mostly on the developer side) but their end user facing stuff is at best inconvenient, at worst a pile of crap.

I haven't tried this solution yet. When you used Revo Uninstaller it was able to see the games installed in the protected windows app folder? And when you uninstalled them, would it then allow you to reinstall them without the 0x87E00017 error?

If you ever played Sea of Thieves with friends, you will understand that this piece of shit App is a black box when it comes to connecting and inviting. People appearing offline, people not receiving invites, invites being greyed-out, invites failing without any errors. All we need, from this App from the trillion dollar company, is to launch games and invite people. That is all, and somehow it is a rocket science for multiple years on how to build such experience.

Yeah, I also had the drive space being eaten by uninstalled titles, but it wasn't on C, so whatever.

This is exactly why I won't use the app any longer. Had enough of their shit, took complete ownership of the folders and nuked it all. Part of the reason I didn't renew my Game Pass sub last week. Once I see that it's solid and shit like this is in the past, I might reconsider. As of now, I don't need the headache.

The other garbage part of it was that I had it specifically set to install to my F drive where all my games are but it kept installing to my C where I didn't want it. Never found a fix before I just removed it all.

Stories like this are why I haven't bitten on the $1 Game Pass deal. I have no interest in dealing with some of the issues I've heard about. I don't need the extra headache.

Technically this has nothing to do with Game Pass though? It's the Microsoft Store. If you bought these games through the store or the Xbox app, the same thing applies.

Never have a pc configuration you can't repeatably reinstall with minimal effort. It's not too tough to script if you have good backups of user data.

Technically you might be correct but a lot of people are getting in on the Game Pass promos so it's perfectly reasonable to highlight GP as the source of the issue.

I'm sorry. I really need to let it out once more : The MS store is the most awful, horrible and frustrating experience I've had as a gamer in my 28 years. I can't believe we give Microsoft a pass for this. We are just used to deal with this bullshit and move one.

Shit boys, we have to make backups, resintall windows and even make scrips... All to uninstall games.
