This fact always blows my mind considering how long between mainline FF games we have to wait now.

I played both of them upon release (I bought a launch day ps2 and had a blast with ssx)

I immensely preferred Final Fantasy IX due to the world, characters, story and music. But i was SO hyped for X!! It just didnt hit the same way for me. I didnt like a lot about it, even though these days i look back upon it more fondly than back then.

What about you?

I liked FFX more at launch, then I got to the battle with Sin and realized I hated FFX.

FFIX took me longer to come around on but I wound up liking it more overall by the end.

FFX for sure felt like the next generation of FF. IX was fun but seemed like too much of a throwback with an absolutely bewildering final boss.

Loved FFIX. It felt like a proper swan song for the Final Fantasy that I knew & loved. Strongly disliked FFX and extracted almost nothing out of it that I look back on positively.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but IX, X and XI were developed basically at the same time.

I really liked FFX, but IX is way better in my opinion. The music, the atmosphere, the character design…

I like X more but I think IX is very good and probably my favourite of the PS1 trio (7/8/9).

FFIX is a better game story wise. FFX is more fulid. Both great but FFIX is better (And now we have 8X speed or whatever it's easier).

I got FFIX on release day too and have the art book and played it for 8 hours day 1 and the last time I did that.

I never finished FFX. FFIX is one of my favorite games in the series. X has a great battle system ( also the sphere grid), but I don't like any of the characters and the presentation is a hard sell for me.

FFIX was a black sheep when it came out. I'm glad it gets a lot more love these days.

I actually disliked both of them, because the PAL editions were utterly shite because of the NSTC > PAL conversion.

I played both again around 2015-2017 and FFIX still plays like crap. I respect the nostalgia and love people have for this game but I totally do not understand it. But FFX I liked more then. It was a technology demo as much as it were a game, and it really set the stage for the next 20 years of FF games. Dark Aeons were fun.

I think FF9 is one of the best game ever, i think FF10 is boring as sin and has led to the worst direction the series has taken. If you don't like the characters, FF10 has genuinely very little to offer overall. FF9 not only has the characters but a fantastic world that builds upon itself and changes as time goes on

9 is ATB while 10 is responsive turn based with party switching, so 10 is the clear winner to me from a gameplay perspective.

IX was and is deeply unappealing to me. i thought X would be great but wasn't really into it either.

bad times for FF IMO! they announced three mainline games on the same day and i didn't care for any of them. X-2 and XII redeemed the series

I really, really like FF10 and 100% it, but FF9 is still to this date my favourite game of all time.

I did not own a PS2 back in 2001. I think I got one either early 2003 or late 2002.
So I had an extra year with IX.

What I remember is that I was mindblown by X's graphics. And definitely thought it was better when I finally got a PS2 to play it.

But it didn't last long. IX was and probably still is my favorite FF. I went back to it since the wait for XII was shockingly long (god, wasn't it great getting a full fledged FF every year? :'<) and I vastly prefer it to X. I never liked the characters in X or that era of Nomura design. And while To Zanarkand is an incredible piece of music, I'm not that fond of the OST either.

Still, I should probably revisit X at some point. I bought the remaster and never got around to playing it. Is the Japanese VO more bearable than the English one?

It kinda feels crazy rn that we get FF16, FF7R-2 and FF14 7.0 all within like probably 6-8 months from each other.

Then I liked FF9 more because it was a return to form after FF8 and I loved how it leaned into the visual language of the older games (like how Vivi looked). I thought it was a good send off for what Final Fantasy was for this whole new generation starting with FFX.

Had I known X and X2 were actually the end of an era I would have appreciated them more. Especially X2.

FFIX was a nice sendoff to the era. it wasn't the successor to FFVIII I had quite hoped for but in time my feelings for FFVIII are more muddled. I used to consider it my favorite one but that changed

FFX, while a technical marvel for its time, was somewhat of a letdown to me. overall game just felt kind of condensed compared to epicness of I-IX (due to next gen overhaul. i.e. obviously you couldn't have a traditional "world map") and was a precursor to the "corridor" design of XIII. and the cast/story just didn't really hit for me. tbh there's some aspects of the story i'm not sure i comprehend to this day, such as the "dream" stuff

I adore both but I think I have a slight preference for IX's whimsical style after all these years

IX was my first FF so it holds higher sentimental value for me(plus it has Vivi), but I love both and I would consider both Top tier FFs out of the ones I've played. .

FFX. Much better story and characters.

I liked FF9, but it kinda falls apart midway through narratively.

I sped through IX, characters did not speak to me at the time with the exception of Vivi, design was off putting for someone in their teens who envisioned VII and VIII chars as realistic (I know...).
X was great and probably my 2nd fav numbered entry and it was so at the time as well.
So X...

I respect IX more now. I did like it back then but thought Quina and Zidane were somewhat bizarre (hated Trance) and I didn't like the story as well. Sin is a convoluted mess but I still think it's a better setup and payoff than Kuja.

The music in IX and the vibes in the scenarios were wonderful (don't like the vocal part of Mellodies of Life though - don't like Suteki da ne as well)

Final Fantasy IX is like the perfect RPG, just grease the wheels of the battle system a bit.

Two of my first games I bought when I first got my PS2 (which was my first Playstation).

FFIX I enjoyed far more - the story, characters, music, etc.

Both games are in my top 5 (with IX being in top 2 and X being at #5)

Loved them both when they came out, and still do today. But X is my favorite game of all time, so naturally i prefer it over IX.

I think I like the gameplay a bit more in X but everything else in IX. It was hard to accept X not having an overworld.

I thought both were pretty middling at the time. Maybe liked X slightly more for combat and music, but I didn't really care for either world or scenario.

My opinions improved over time but I still wouldn't put either near my favorites.

IX left a way bigger impression on me. I simply love(d) that game's visual style.

X was great though, I remember being super into the battle system when that came out.

I loved them both. I was young so a lot of the "mysterious" in FFX was fresh for me. I absolutely loved the cast and the writing in FFIX though. It's still my favorite. I think it's legit a funny game.

For me, 9 is top 5 and X is one of the worst. Just dislike the majority of the characters and the story in X and didn't enjoy running around anywhere

I was so hyped for IX after loving VII and VIII but I didn't like it at all and never made it past disk one. All that killed my hype for FFX so when it came out I didn't even buy it but my brother did. I watched him play a bit and was hooked, luckily he had to go to work and I was still playing when he got home.

I have a hard time splitting them for quality. I feel like FFX is more consistent overall but the best parts of FFIX reach a higher level.

The reason I voted FFIX is mostly because I prefer the classic FF template. FFX is a great game but it's also the first step in the transformation into what FF is today, and that's carries a negative connotation for me.
