Feds tighten grip in Gaetz probe

The announcement of a change-of-plea hearing for Joel Greenberg puts additional pressure on the congressman.

Federal investigators are intensifying their sex-crimes probe of Rep. Matt Gaetz as they discuss a potential immunity arrangement with his former girlfriend and have struck a tentative deal with his one-time "wingman" who will likely plead guilty, according to multiple people familiar with the situation.

The U.S. Department of Justice's Public Integrity Section also continues to interview potential witnesses who could provide prosecutors with evidence against Gaetz. One witness told POLITICO that prosecutors spent two hours asking questions about whether Gaetz (R-Fla.) or others in his circle had sex with a 17-year-old girl in 2017.

The likely plea by Greenberg, whom Gaetz once called his "wingman," is a new development that signals Gaetz may be facing increasing legal peril. Federal investigators have interviewed more than a dozen people in the case, according to four sources familiar with the inquiry. Two friends of Gaetz's ex-girlfriend, who is not the 17-year-old, say she is in talks to be a witness for the prosecution but she wants an immunity deal for possible obstruction. And another source familiar with the investigation previously told POLITICO that the alleged sex-trafficking victim was "100 percent" talking to prosecutors about Gaetz, but her level of cooperation or the information she gave is not clear. The people spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the legal proceedings.

If this were any of us, we would have already been arrested. What are they waiting for?

Don't know why this motherfucker hasn't stepped down even if he's going to admit nothing and say it was just due to "cAnCeL cUlTuRe" or something.

I feel like this ends with Gaetz doing something like 3 months in jail, which will really be a minimum security facility where he'll likely watch tv all day, and cost him a shit ton of money his family has plenty of. He'll likely lose his seat but become a martyr on the Right, likely landing a gig on OAN before the 2024 election.

Call me crazy but I have given up on justice for these wealthy and powerful people.

Gaetz team already saying the wingman is already a liar so any plea deal is also a lie.

Yeah, no way a conviction will change the minds of MAGA cultists. He's their hero no matter what and will say he's the victim of a witch-hunt.

Unlike any of us, Gaetz has nearly unlimited political and financial resources at his disposal for his defense. Look into his family, if you haven't. As a prosecutor, your case needs to be bulletproof, as any trial is going to be a protracted and expensive high-profile endeavor.

Nobody on the Right is going to care if the teenager says she lied and told Gaetz she was an adult. Nobody. I mean quite honestly, I barely do if she was 17. The law is the law and he should face the consequences, and she was still a minor and what he did was wrong, please don't get me wrong.

Of course, if this was somebody on the Left, it would be the biggest political scandal post Trump and would likely cost the Democrats elections in 2022 and I'm not even kidding. Imagine if this was AOC. Good lord.

100%. I doubt he serves any time unless there were other girls he had sex with while knowing they were underage. From what I've read about this case apparently the girl misled him and said she was 18 despite being 17 so it will be hard to hold him accountable, especially with his family being rich and connected in Florida.

Yeah I'm more pissed off because if this was anybody without money and influence, say you or I, we would be charged with a felony and would be doing hard time in a rough prison. But, in America some people have more rights than others.

Gaetz is toast. I don't know how people can think he will just walk at this point. However, I agree with the above statements that he might get off with a light sentence.

Federal prosecutors don't bring charges unless they think they have an airtight case in any event. That's why so many people plead guilty when they are charged.

Roy Moore vanished from the political sphere after being pushed out. But then again, his daddy isn't one of the richest men in Florida.

He also wasn't one of the most loudest voices with one of the largest public profiles on the Right. Gaetz is also not a creepy old man AND we are now post Trump. It's different times.

The U.S. Secret Service, which initiated the Greenberg investigation over allegations that Greenberg used county resources to mine Bitcoin, would not comment on the ongoing probe. Federal prosecutors with the Middle District of Florida would not say if investigators have questioned Zalonka. Greenberg's attorney declined comment, citing attorney-client privilege.
