The basic story behind this is that a guy named Carl92 uploaded a short clip of a song a couple years ago that he supposedly recorded off of a TV in the late 90s. The song sounds like a really good (imo) 80s pop song. We basically don't have any more information to go off of other than that Carl92 is from Spain (we don't even know if he was in Spain when he recorded it).

Clip of the song that we have:

The original thread Carl posted: https://www.watzatsong.com/en/name-that-tune/719553.html

Rolling Stone's article on the situation: https://www.rollingstone.com/cultur...yone-knows-that-lost-mystery-song-1234875326/

Fan-made recreations of what a full song could have sounded like:

There are a lot of pieces of "lost media" that have existed over the years but for some reason this one intrigues me in a way none of the others did. For one, the song is really good imo. The story is also lacking in enough details that makes me think it could develop more over time. But also because I really have no idea what this song is or how it could be lost.

Ah additional thoughts what it sounds like is one of those songs that plays on a TV ad where it's a strange not quite right cover of a well known song

First take is it sounds like bits of multiple songs. It rings a bell to me but like I said it sounds manufactured with multiple songs.

Thought this was going to be about the Internets most mysterious song.

The "Most Mysterious Song on the Internet" is a bit less interesting to me at this point since we at least have the full song there and a lot of details. This has so much less, which makes me really want to hear the full song lol

I mean when you consider how many small time bands get played on college stations, local public access, daytime talk shows etc etc, this seems nigh impossible unless a member or friend of the band comes forward and is like "Oh yeah, that was the Shiny Forks, a local band from Ames IA. I ran the merch table at their show at the VFW"

edit: honestly this sounds a lot like Alan Palomo (Neon Indian), I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be a very early project of his

going the cynical route people initially took with panchikos deathmetal which is that this is just some shit someone made and put some filters over to make it sound like lost media or something.

This reminds me of that episode of the Reply All podcast where the guy is convinced he knows a song from the radio but everyone he talks to thinks he's crazy or that the song doesn't exist. It's really one of the best podcast episodes I've ever listened to and you should all listen too:

A man in California is haunted by the memory of a pop song from his youth. He can remember the lyrics and the melody. But the song itself has vanished, completely scrubbed from the internet. PJ takes on the Super Tech Support case.

That was my immediate assumption upon checking out the OP. Everything about this screams artifice for the sake of Internet engagement.

the underlying audio quality under the fuzz and everything sounds too high quality to be ripped with consumer equipment at the time. that's just based off what i've heard before in the past so maybe i'm wrong who knows, but idk. just feels off.

Getting SCP vibes from this. The song does not in fact exist at all, it's 20 seconds of static that triggers a response in the brain to fill the gap with an entirely fabricated song, each person hearing something entirely different.

My first instinct is that it's fake. But that's a boring and easy thing to say without any actual evidence of it being fake. So if I put that part of me aside, the second instinct is that it was a commercial jingle for something local.

This episode is a MUST listen, if nothing else, for the part where they have musicians recreate the song from the guy's memory, police sketch-style. It's amazing.

I bookmarked this thread a few days ago and finally got around to listening to this. Absolutely incredible from start to finish. Tyler's memory is insane, he basically remembered the entire song.

It still astounds me that something can just completely disappear like this song. I'm happy the original artist was found and that he was able to release it again

And it's actually pretty catchy/ good!

Yeah I just, I guess I'm on team fake or artificial, it just doesn't seem like a song.

It kinda reminds me of a fake song like from saved by the bell or something, maybe it could be from some obscure TV show that's completely lost media now.

I'd dig up the occasional demo tape when perusing the music section of Goodwill and would sometimes wonder about the songs that go unheard and eventually pass from human memory. I imagine a few of them would have been absolute bangers too, but we'll never know.
