Astro's had a meteoric rise over the past few years. After his unassuming debut as a part of Playroom VR, he spun out into his own game (which happens to be the most revolutionary 3D platformer since Mario 64) in Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, and now his next game, Astro's Playroom, will be featured as a free pack-in for all PS5 owners, which will give him a lot more mainstream awareness. It's safe to say that the future looks bright for the charming little robot.

My question to you all is, despite the fact that he's a relatively new mascot for PlayStation, do you think Astro Bot has already secured the position as Sony's best mascot? Personally, I'd say yes, given the way that Astro Bot encapsulates a celebration of PlayStation as a whole:
  • His design mirrors the black/white/blue color scheme of PlayStation
  • The level design in his games feature aspects of PlayStation hardware (the button symbols as flowers, components like SSD/GPU/cooling/memory serving as themes for different levels, etc.)
  • His games are great showcases for what the hardware can do (Rescue Mission for PSVR, Astro's Playroom for PS5 capabilities)
  • He has an unbelievable amount of charm
  • Astro's Playroom has all sorts of nods to other PlayStation IP (God of War, Sly Cooper, etc.), which reinforces the notion that Astro's games are a hub to celebrate PlayStation as a whole
Some people might argue that Kratos, Aloy, Ellie, Nate Drake, etc. are more important PlayStation icons, and in terms of sales/hype that's undeniably true. However, those franchises could continue without those characters (and most likely will at some point). Astro Bot feels like an evergreen mascot that doesn't ever really need to be retired. He feels like PlayStation's potential answer to Mario -- a lovable mascot with an iconic design who can exist outside of time (i.e. he'll never grow old) and who really embodies what the brand/ecosystem as a whole is all about.

What say you all?

Look, Kat didn't fly upside down and risk the blood rushing to her head for this kind of disrespect.

But ASTRO is pretty cool

Not right now but he could be if they push him (?) towards it. I like that choice better than picking a human character in a franchise that's more serious and less 'fun'.

They designed an entire console around it.

Also Crash Bandicoot was their best mascot. Someone find that commercial!

If Playroom ends up being fantastic then maybe, but for me, VR was the best part of Astro Bot, not the character. It could've been any character in that game and it would've been fun.
Pipo Monkeys are still the best.

Probably, but it's an extremely low bar since I can't say Sony's own attempts at "mascots" ever quite hit off in long term the way you'd expect mascots to do. I like the design but as much as Astro Bot plays with Sony iconography it's not really a character that feels emblematic of Sony's catalog itself.

Also I really think it needed a name that isn't just one letter away from Astro Boy.

No i dont think so. A little to soft as a mascotte i think. Crash was very cool but meanwhile he is also available on xbox.
I also like Jak alot but there are no more games coming out for that.
Maybe ratchet? or Sackboy

I don't really think anything when I look at Astro. He's just a generic little robot.

Mascots are kind of past their prime anyways, so I don't think Sony needs to go all-in on having one. It isn't 1996 anymore.

He's the best mascot on a technical level but I prefer Sackboy, Ape Escape Monkeys, Atoi, and even those two cats. They've all been robbed (tho Sackboy's doin ok). Thank god it isn't Knack.

"Normal Realistic Human Person" isn't really a mascot IMO. I guess my definition is "can the character be dressed up as in a full-body suit with a giant foam head?" Mascot costume Nathan Drake would be horrifying.

Dunno, they kinda look like futuristic-flavoured Sackboys to me to be honest, they're cute and whatever but not particularly memorable, their design it's just too much plain and generic.

I don't think Sony has any real "mascotte" character and i guess they're fine with that since it's not the kind of stuff they're focusing on right now.

Astrobot looks like a PS5, so he could pop up a bunch this gen! I personally like Sackboy better, even as a person who doesn't really love LittleBigPlanet.

He's the better sackboy, though he might almost be too connected to the console itself

Yes, as might as well, why not?

The apes are dead right now.

Toro got shoved into mobile.

Knack is ugly to me.

Jak & Sly is buried by the original developers.

Crash & Spyro belongs to another company.

Ratchet is too old for a mascot.

Sackboy also have the mascot potential though.

But Astro is more adorable, cute, Rescue Mission was superb, and not to mention current most successful from Japan first-party currently.

In my humble opinion. 🤷

One of Sony's oldest mascots, but Western Sony was always weird and never bothered to bring such things over. I guess because he was too "Japanese quirky." One of the only things we ever got was the Vita game.

Oh gotcha, thanks for the explanation. I was wondering how I never heard of him, but if it's a Japanese only thing that makes sense lol

As a huge fan of Crash Bandicoot due to nostalgia: yes, Astro is the best mascot because Astro has by far the best game of any mascot on Playstation ever.

Astrobot is that damn good.

Yes. Absolutely. 100% without question.Sony better not mistreat Astro Butt. It already stars in the best platformer they've ever made.

This poll will look different when everyone finally gets to experience Astro Bot at launch since so few have tried the PSVR game.

Potential is there, but definitely need a big blow out non-niche game. Astrobot Rescue Mission is amazing, but not nearly enough people in the "Playstation eco system" played it
