They all look to have pretty distinct attacks though, so I don't really mind.

Well it's because they appear to go from their appearances in the anime and four of them were students of the fifth one

A cheap 2D Fighter looks way worse than a cheap arena fighter especially in HD. It's harder to hide asset reuse in a 2D game for instance. Also, much easier to do cinematic attacks when you got models that can do cinematics. And it's Cyberconnect2 who's expertise lies in 3D action.
