Original article

Honestly I started out posting this because it made me burst out laughing when it first came up.

The more I read though, the angrier it made me. Is this still how some "journalists" are treating videogames and their players?

The Mirror is not exactly a high-quality rag to begin with... But to take an online casino as a reputable source, put such a ridiculous picture up there, and call it journalism ... It honestly beggars belief this is how some papers are still reporting about Dem Damn Basement Dwellin' Youths in the 2020s. Incidentally I couldn't find any reference to the original 'research' at the casino website.

Mods - Please feel free to take down if you'd rather not give them the oxygen; however I've included some choice cuts below if people would rather not give the article the clicks.

(Some particularly useful advice at the end of this extensive, scientific insight).

Researchers from OnlineCasino.ca have predicted what avid gamers could look like in just 20 years if they don't change their habits.

The team has created a model called Michael, who doesn't look too well.

The researchers explained: "The visualisation shows that Michael has pale and pasty skin from years of being in artificial light and the result of lack of Vitamin D and B-12. He has stress-related eczema across his legs and arms and a permanently bent back from poor posture."

The model also has an indent in his skull due to consistent, light pressure of wearing a gaming headset.

Based on the findings, the researchers are urging gamers to take proper breaks from their gaming sessions.

I have been playing video games since I was about 3 and I'm now 36 playing games constantly since about 8 years old and don't have the problems listed so there is no reason to think peoples health going forward will be worse. As others have said just because you play games a lot does not mean you don't do exercise or work or do other social activities

So do people that have been gaming for 20 years already look like this or is this what they expect 40 years of gaming to look like?

Seems kinda redundant for a study to be done on something we already have evidence for with people having played games for well over 20 years.

Lol. Gaming will come to dominate all forms of entertainment, and these boomers will be wringing their hands in nostalgia for the "better times" when they spent their days watching crap TV with dead eyes.

Anyone remember that nerd/jock dichotomy that dominated American society in the 80s? Today, everybody's a nerd. It's cool to be a nerd. Cause you're either a nerd or a fumbling luddite who doesn't understand tech, doesn't know pop culture, and is a fucking bore.

Or remember when film critic Roger Ebert bitched about how video games weren't "art" in 2005? Today, most people have no idea who Ebert was. But across the world, numerous awards exist that recognize the art and craft of games, and all these awards find large audiences.

These people are just luddites who have been left at the totem pole in the march of civilization. They don't understand the future, so they must demonize it to stave away their insecurities about no longer fitting in. It soothes their fragile egos to make these models and spit out these articles. I wish them peace.
