Cookie Clicker, one of the original idle games and a form of digital crack, now has an incoming Steam port.

New features include:
  • A soundtrack from C418 (you might remember him as the guy who scored this one other indie game that got kinda popular)
  • Multi-language support (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Czech, Dutch, Japanese, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese)
  • All of its 500+ achievements are now also Steam achievements, letting you track them & compare with friends, etc.
  • Cloud saves (i.e., no more losing your save because you can't find that save code you copied down somewhere)

I spent way too many hours playing this back then... I managed to stop after a couple of weeks though, never again

I still check on my progress of the web version every once in a while. I don't have the time to not play it passively anymore though. I might get this if I forget to backup the save again.

I kinda wish the trailer/screenshots/etc hadn't spoiled the existence of the Grandmapocalypse, and some of the nightmare-fuely things that go with it, but I guess that's kind of an open secret at this point.

Btw, Cookie Clicker fans really should try this one:

Tempted to give NGU a spin as well. It looks like quite the rabbit hole to go down, though, even amongst other idlers.

Cookie clicker is way less intense, FYI. Prepare for an ENORMOUS time sink. It's good, sure. But it's also massive. I haven't even unlocked Quests and spent ungodly amounts of time with the game.

Hopefully there's a way of transferring the tab I've had open for 8 years on my parent's computer in to this version...

Time to hire more grandmas to leave Steam open and inflate the userbase numbers. Gaben's master plan.

Oh wow, I only recently stopped one of my longer runs this spring due to a computer crash, seemed way to daunting to jump back in the browser version. This might get me back into it though.

Love Cookie Clicker so much, but forgot to back up a save a couple of years ago for months and the thing that always happens happened, so I haven't looked at it since... but hey, cloud saves? Yeah, I'm all over this. Can't wait to click.

Oh yeah, another Idle game to run non stop on my Steam, instead in a browser. Love me some good clicker/idle games.
Btw. the mentioned NGU Idle is phenomenal, I've been playing it for months and still miss several game mechanics that unlock waaaay later as I progress, definately recommended.

NGU I felt got to a point where its various systems were beginning to impose a schedule on my time, like the guides would suggest you HAD to do X for an hour and then switch to Y for another three hours and then do Z until you hit 24 hours and then you'd reset and start the cycle again, but definitely don't go over 24 hours because A. So I quit.

Cookie Clicker, by contrast, seemed pretty simplistic and not particularly interesting to look in on after a while. Kittens Game is my sweet spot, tons of mechanics and wild stuff to play with, but still meaningful decisions to make without requiring four different Google Sheet calculators or completely counterintuitive strategies on a regular basis.

Well that was unexpected. I bit disappointed that the interface is the same, though. Don't really see the advantage in playing this over the browser version.

Oh god I'm not ready to fall into this timesink again

I actually have a savefile/code from like a year and a half ago, which was a restart after I deleted the cookies (ha!) off my browser without saving my previous run (which had already gone into the heavenly chips section), big loss 😫

New info: Workshop support, save file transfer, possible Mac/Linux versions

Couple new tidbits from a Q&A on Orteil's Tumblr. One of the biggest things: there will also be Steam Workshop support!
  • Q: What are the differences between the web and Steam versions?
  • A: The two versions are nearly identical save for some perks that the Steam platform allows for: in addition to being ad-free, Cookie Clicker on Steam gets achievements, cloud saving, workshop support and music by C418. There's also translations in 11 other languages, but we'll likely be backporting that to the web version too

  • Q: Will we be able to use mods?
  • A: We're planning on offering full workshop support. The Steam version is an electron wrapper around the HTML game so it should be easy to tweak and mess around with regardless!

Apparently you can transfer your save from the browser version as well, although this may cause issues:
  • Q: Will we be able to import our saves over from the web version?
  • A: While this is not *officially* supported (out of principle we're not too into giving players the ability to unlock a ton of Steam achievs in one go), it shouldn't be too hard to swap files around if you reeeally want to continue your browser save in Steam. We're not liable for anything wacky happening as a result of that kind of modification

  • Q: Will the browser version still be developed?
  • A: Yes! The free web game remains the master version and will get all the updates first. Both versions will receive the same development

Native versions for Mac/Linux are also a possibility:
  • Q: Will the Steam version support Mac/Linux?
  • A: That's still up in the air, it's probably doable but we'd rather not overpromise!

It's out and I'm trapped in cookieland all over again. Soundtrack's pretty great as expected.

Mod support isn't fully ready yet but there are some sample ones you can enable, including a "cool" one that puts sunglasses on the big cookie. #GOTY

Sorry for the thread bump but this game got an update on June 2nd.

Full changelog in this update:

  • added a new building
  • added a new tier of upgrades and achievements
  • added a few new heavenly upgrades
  • added the jukebox
  • the 3 secret heavenly upgrades now rely on how many times the relevant digit is present in total, rather than at the end
  • backgrounds overhauled; extra options for the background selector
  • extra options for the golden cookie sound selector
  • the bank minigame now tells you the value you previously bought a stock at
  • the bank minigame flow is a little more exciting
  • new option to disable your game activity showing up in Discord
  • launch errors now provide the option to restart without mods

Stay tuned for future news! We still have a whole lot more in store!
-Orteil

Normally there isn't much except a few bug fixes here and there for updates but getting a brand new building is pretty big. Not sure how long it's been since he added the idleverse, but it sounds like a lot more is on the way.

"A few new heavenly upgrades" is definitely underplaying it. There's a ton more now, including two large paths of upgrades on the right side which can "unshackle" both buildings and upgrade tiers, increasing their effectiveness. I thought I had a lot of chips banked up, but I still haven't been able to buy them all yet.

I'd already maxed out my heavenly upgrades before the update. I'm headed toward 200 Trillion heavenly chips - wonder if that'll get me all the upgrades when I ascend.

New update! Includes the 20th and final building. Future updates will focus on adding minigames to buildings that don't currently have one.

There's also a neat feature that lets you gift up to 1000 cookies to other players. You have to purchase the associated Heavenly Upgrade first, for 999k chips; after that you can find it in the Options menu (top-right corner).

Ah, cookie clicker. The fond memories of leaving my work computer running the whole weekend with mouse click software installed only to find out on monday that the computer had crashed.
