Seriously, a video game compilation like this has no right to sound as good as it does. I remember I used to just sit there and listen to it for hours. I listened to it again today and it felt like coming home. Every single track is a banger.

SEGA fucking nailed the audio and visual presentation. The menus sooth my eyes.

Wow, I totally forgot about Manual. I remember spending an entire summer (2003 maybe?) playing nothing but this and Animal Crossing on my GameCube, and I would at various times leave one or the other on late at night listening to the music

It's so good! I used to boot up mega collection plus when i was cleaning my room back in the days and leave it on the menue just to hear the soothing music while i cleaned.

Mega collection's soundtrack and menus are fully ingrained into my brain for life. This game was absolutely huge for me and it's where I spent a good deal of my gaming time in the years after its release.

I literally can't deal with the manual music not having the page turning sound

History is my jam. That's the kind of music that takes me to a whole new world.

The "History" music is so oddly melancholic to listen to

I guess it fits, as Mega Collection was essentially SEGA's way of introducing Sonic's old games for a newer generation that never touched their consoles, thus signifying the end of an era...

Also a full 3D world map to explore. WTF?

Well, assuming you don't know the story, that was an actual game in development. They knew the Saturn's days were numbered but wanted to get what they had working on out the door, sort of like how years later they provided video of Saturn Shenmue. The last of the Saturn's internal projects were leaps and bounds better over the early stuff.

They kept working on that game afterwards. It became Sonic Adventure, and the tools they used to make Sonic Jam World became the foundation of the Dreamcast's Katana SDK.

Thanks for the nostalgia hit for today, I heard these songs so much as a kid because I really enjoyed looking at the extra stuff in that collection.

yeah, it's a really great development story.

it definitely was a horrible tease to play the game when it came out though. lol

I can only imagine how far the saturn would have been pushed had it lived as long as the PSX or N64. Nearly all the saturn games made were made in about a 2.5 year period. Nearly every game on the saturn's library came before final fantasy VII. Something like Sonic Adventure with Sonic Jam's graphics on the saturn would have gone a long way towards dispelling the notion that the saturn couldn't do 3D, as Sonic Jam looks pretty great.

It's funny that I (and others) get nostalgic over a retro collection
Lots of compilations are now closer in age to the games on them than they are to the present day. The intro and menus for Atari Collection 1 were always kind of ugly but now they're nostalgic for me.

Now I want to dig out Sega Ages Vol. 1 on Saturn and play it in a CD player again.

This game's music while great, was always so weird to me because it felt like it was going for this futuristic, but sometimes sad vibe. It definitely matched what Sonic ended up going mid-late 90s onward, but still came off as weird; even weirder now given Sonic sort of went back to being this upbeat franchise again after Colors (I guess Forces was trying to have this futuristic-sad feeling again, but it did not do it well).

I remember cherishing this game, and I miss it when I see modern collections.

Same. Game collections this generation have been so boring and/or mediocre in the presentation that they offer. Sure, their main purpose is to get us to play these classic games, but taking the extra step towards making it more interesting was always appreciated.

When this was released, the games on this collection were about 17 years old or younger. This collection came out 24 years ago. This is way more retro today, than the retro games that were on it were retro when it was released.

Loved these collections but does anyone know why they used the much worse version of sonic 3d blast over the good Saturn one and why all the 8 bit games were the cramped shit game gear versions and not the excellent master system ones?

1. Because the entire collection was Genesis games
2. There were no GameGear games in Sonic Mega Collection, that was Sonic Gems Collection. I don't know why they didn't use the Master System versions

Put Sonic and Music together and it's hard to not find at least a dozen or more decent tracks.

I thought a few of them didn't have Master System versions but I may be misremembering.

I had no idea it was the PSO composer who made these, that makes these so much better for me than they already were, and it makes so much sense.

I was super disappointed when I booted up Sonic Genesis Collection on Switch that there was no menu/idle music, just some very light environmental sounds
