It's almost like it's one of the most racist places on earth.

you know, another way to frame this is that the democratic party has failed the working class and if you look at it that way... not so controversial now, is it?

It's probably not 90%, but it's probably a still a majority.

Does it mean that Democrats should just not try in Mississippi?

Dems do nothing in Mississippi, and get 10 percent. Bernie is just talking about a 50 state strategy here, which I think a lot of people agree with.

If it was a vacuum yeah sure. But in the real world....yikes that just displays the ignorance of the state.

90% of Whites voting for Rs is definitely because of the social spending they champion and not the social conservatism.

not arguing whether or not 90% of whites in Mississippi are racist, because it's probably something close to that number, but Bernie's strategy of "hey, let's try winning over votes by actually appealing to these people with policy instead of thinking its hopeless and labeling them as racist" makes a lot more sense especially going into 2020.

I mean, you could frame it that way just as easily as you could frame it as "The Republican party has supported and earned the vote of the working class," which wouldn't be true either.

I mean, if you're voting republican you at least really don't give a shit about racism.

90% voting republican says a lot about that state. And it's not economic anxiety:

*get 10 percent among white voters.

It's not much better for the local candidates! 90% of white voters in Mississippi being racist is probably a generous estimate, if anything.

Jim Hood (the incumbent Attorney General, and one of the last statewide elected Democrats in the Deep South) ran a very well-funded campaign for Governor last year and lost by nearly six points. You think this shit happens by accident? Like Sanders has cracked the code that all the other Democrats are too stupid to have figured out?

Incidentally this is why it's important that the Southern states have a voice in the Democratic primary, contrary to Sanders supporters' complaints about Clinton cleaning up in the region last time. Obama may have only won 10% of the white vote, but he won 44% overall in 2012 on the strength of black turnout (black voters made up 36% of the electorate). They deserve as much of a say in the future of the Democratic Party as any blue state liberal, especially seeing as how they rely on federal programs a lot more than blue state citizens.

Another Bernie thread where this topic is literally not at all controversial but some will try to pretend that it is. Theres nothing wrong with that statement

It's not, but we are gonna act like every single white person is racist in Mississippi (I know there is a lot of racism there, but 90%? Nah)
Do you know why Mississippi's education is so poor?

Because any time they try to raise the budget you get a bunch of adds saying "You don't want your hard earned money going to Hinds County, do you?"

(Hinds county, FYI, is very black).

Try living there before you open your mouth about the politics there.

He's clearly trying to get their votes by telling them they aren't as bad as other liberals make them out to be. Why does it matter how true or false it is if it is strengthening the democrats position there, and as a result moves racist people out of power and helps remove and reduce institutional racism.

Dude often ignores race as a significant factor for the stuff he throws out lmao. He's gotten better in that regard, but it still rears it's head from time to time

Don't tell me when to open my mouth, period.

You want to know how to make a difference? Campaigning there and having a strong federal government that will spend more money in things like education, something I think a lot of these Dem candidates would do.

Bernie sees society solely through the prism of class and it's surprising to me that this line of attack isn't utilized more frequently by his opponents. He never seems comfortable when talking about minorities and their specific troubles directly.

this is the kind of thing you say when you want to try and get racist white people to vote for you. it's like when Biden says that Republicans aren't all bad people.
