Thanks for all the answers !
You could always use the starter gear and not level up skills as a way to artificially make the game a bit harder.
Not a fan of that type of playing. I'd prefer using every gears and abilities to create nice tactics depending on situations/team.
Don't recall a difficulty setting in the game, but you can select different difficulties for dungeons. So, when you get to a new dungeon, you can play it in either easy, normal, heroic or legendary (legendary was locked until you completed the dungeon once, but I believe they later patched this so you can go legendary the first time through). I did all dungeons on Heroic first time through and didn't replay any dungeons. Difficulty was fine.
Thanks for that ! I exactly hoped it would be that way. Perfect.
Random mobs in JRPGs are not supposed to be a challenge.
The difficulty levels are more for replaying when you have a higher level.
I actually kinda disagree with that. I think random mobs being weak and boring is bad design. The best example I could give you is with the Saga series especially recently Saga Scarlet Grace. You fight battles with difficulties going from easy, normal, hard, to very hard and even normal can be challenging depending on the enemies, your strategy and so on. In my playthrough I did a lot less battles that felt easy than the opposite.
And I looooooved that. Felt extremely rewarding.
The more you experience challenge, the better you play. There's nothing more boring that 100s of boring farm battles just to have 1 challenge. It's much more interesting to have only 10-20 challenging ones with much better reward than the 100s. Quality / Quantity
Keep playing,it gets challenging later on and yes you have difficulty levels for the dungeons, the game even tells you how hard it will be if you raise it...it also keeps your dungeon progress, even if you exit and go grind a bit if it's too hard...you can also leave,go rest at theTavern, switch members if you want to level them up equally etc etc...unless they changed some of that recently, theres a lot of ways to make the game challenging but not impossible...
Don't worry I wasn't complaining, it was purely curiosity. I like how the game feels and really want to continue. I even plan to try to read the comics because the opening "scene" (not the animated one, the new game one) was intriguing.
Ah I see, I thought I read in a patch that characters level up outside of battle but doesn't seem to be the case. I hate grinding in any game and doubt this will change that so if he only gets good later on I doubt I will pick him up unless there is an easy way to get XP later in the game.
What about trying some dungeons in harder difficulty with new crew (or half new half main team), to take advantage of new loot and challenge ? Could be a solution if it seems less farming for you . It would for me.
You will probably ditch Knolan soon anyway ;)
That's sad. I was looking forward to get him. Is he really that hopeless ?
Edit : I guess that is the answer to my question ha ha :
Knolan is probably not so great early on. He'll pick up later on once you get more perk points.
