A little surprised by this announcement since they've stuck with Asphalt 8 for so long and a bunch of side games.
I've tried out the game and honestly the trailer doesn't represent how pretty the game looks, playing on iPhone X.

Some heavily compressed screenshot I've taken (size was too large to upload initially).

So in case you want to try the game yourself, it's actually region locked, unless you have a workaround.
toucharcade.com prepared a guide article here
I tried the VPN myself, which doesn't work, plus after downloading 20 of them not having PH servers, but I got it working with an alternative VPN called "VPN cat master". You just have to bypass the login screen then you can turn it off.

Mario Kart's gonna have some tough competition (probably not in download numbers at least)

Gameloft saw the iOS update laying waste and the Mario Kart announcement, and decided they needed to do something.

Problem is, this is likely going to kill 8 and all of those side games. I hope someone's backing this stuff up, I think some of the older games are effectively lost...

I liked the gameplay of Asphalt 8, but I loathed the IAP. So I got desperate and bought Asphalt: Injection the Vita. lol

Urgh, I hate excessive monetization.
Might still download this because it could be fun on the train between stations...
Gameplay is alright at best. Graphics is the only impressive part. I remember Asphalt 8 having quite a decent length for each mission and this felt extremely short. Also they have the new auto drive mode where it turns into a mobile runner game-like. You can use the old style control but will be heavily handicapped, thus losing the race. I still had some fun with it though, might continue playing for awhile.

I mean... this doesn't look half bad! I loved Asphalt 7, but could never really get into 8. I'm looking forward to at least trying this out.

Is Asphalt 8 iOS 11 compatible?

I spent more time with 8 than I like to admit. Even got it back when it had an admission price :lol (and enjoyed it the most back then; later additions became too grindy or IAP-prone). I wish Gameloft would make a fully fledged premium experience for consoles, as the core gameplay of those games is actually quite fun, even more nowadays with the lack of good arcade racers on the market. Oh well, for now, I'll try this new one out when I get the chance.

Asphalt 8 was neat for a bit. I love arcade racing, but I hit a progression wall and the IAP stuff is fucking crazy. I laughed at the real money prices of single cars if you aren't into grinding.

The graphics are very impressive.
Yep.

Anyway after spending more time (a lot more), I'm really liking this game now.
The later missions are definitely longer, can go up to 2 minutes+ race. There's still some short ones.
Each car have their own energy bar, so you will be utilizing most of the cars available, I played quite a lot before I had to put it down for refill. The premium currency is quite easy to obtain and I've already bought 3 packs of cards using those earned currencies. I never spent money on any mobile games and don't think I will have to for this.

They will probably make the currency tougher to get when the full version comes.

Seems a huge step in graphics from Asphalt Extreme, with modern technique in rendering and lighting.
It's not a surprise since modern hi end smartphone are more powerful than a Switch.

These types of games often have a lot of rendering shortcuts used to minimise load. The CPU may be better but it has to deal with overhead and the GPU is worse.

Lol I remember being hyped for the Asphalt 8 release, and buying it on release date, before it went F2P. These games have decent gameplay, but they're ruined by the monetisation :(

It looks very impressive. Asphalt 8 already looked great when it launched almost 3 years ago if i am not wrong but this is huge improvement. I hope that performance won't be bad on Android.
