AMD has unveiled B550 motherboards today, together with five models from several manufacturers that will start from $100. The biggest upgrades are PCE Gen4 for both GPU and Storage, three x16 Gen3 lanes for GPUs and multigpu support. Motherboards look to be very nice.

However, the biggest news is the fragmentation of AM4. Owners of gen1 [B350/X370] and gen2 [B450/X470] motherboards WILL NOT be able to use the upcomingZen 3 [Ryzen 4000] CPUs.

Ryzen 3000 support for B350 and A320 was never official, and entirely up to the motherboard manufacturer. IIRC some B450/X470 boards will support Ryzen 4000, also unofficially.

Not surprising, don't you also currently miss out on some of the PBO stuff if you run some 3000 series chips in X370 motherboards?

Been running my Ryzen 1700 in my X370 since day one, so maybe I'll take this time to shift everything over when the 4000 series comes out. Economy permitting, of course.

Whew, glad I didn't buy B450 a month ago with the plan I had to upgrade to 4000. I'll keep holding.

Shit. So I'll need to upgrade to a 3000 then. Was hoping it would still support 4000.

Was about to post a thread but I will post it here. This is just AMD's official communication not what motherboard vendors are limited to support.

This is a slight shift in communication from previous launch in terms of how strongly they are saying only X570/B550 will support X processor but given the history of AM4 support by motherboard manufacturers. There is still a chance the same thing happens as before where AMD's official support was different to what motherboard manufacturers choose to support. i.e from Zen 2 launch

Today you will find bioses available for A320 which wasn't even scheduled to get a "beta" bios.

Which was from launch of X570 but with 1.0.0.4 AGESA which unified the codebase Zen/Ryzen 1 processors are now supported on X570.

The latest AMD Combo PI version 1.0.0.4 Patch B (SMU v46.54) is coming soon.

So for now I would say don't lose hope. When the times comes and vendors don't support it then I will be raising my pitchfork.

Oh nice, when i got my i5 9600k and z390 motherboard last year everyone was telling me to get AMD instead since it would have supported newer CPU whilst the z390 had no upgrade path...where are them now?

This sucks. I was about to pull the trigger on a 3300X and B450 board so I could drop in a 4000 Ryzen at the end of the year.

What's the difference between X570 and B550? (Or their past versions)
I'm curious because I plan on building a new PC soon and was considering going AMD.
Edit: Nvm, one of the links has the difference

You mean like they did with the previous generation?

B350 didnt Support Ryzen Zen 2 CPUs
So logically B450 wont support Ryzen Zen 3 CPUs.(officially)

Pray to the Gigabyte and MSI gods they have their own firmware to allow Zen 3.

I wonder if it might be better to just wait for AM5 and DDR5 instead

Was this not...expected?

I built a PC in December and specifically chose x570 over B450 because I assumed this exact scenario would happen.

Also isn't this just required compatibility from AMD? ie: Motherboard manufacturers can still support older CPUs?

Thank god I didn't listen when everyone kept saying that paying a bit extra for X570 over B450 wasn't worth it.

I just knew AMD wasn't going to update B450 again for Zen 3.

When I bought into the platform, I was only expecting three generations of support, so this is not too bad.
But I was also expecting them to be changing socket/platform for fourth generation Ryzen; not sticking with AM4.

If they had announced this last year, I'd have upgraded then.
But since they didn't say anything until now, I'm more likely to wait and either pick up a cheap/used 3000-series CPU or hold off for a complete new build once DDR5 is here (which could be an Intel system if they are still fastest).

Some just expected they can cheap out on motherboards as much as possible and can get away with it.

Yup
I'll openly admit to getting rope-a-doped by the relative longevity of the A320/B350/X370 platform and thinking I'll be fine.
I'm still in the process of building the B450 system, so I might just suck it up and go B550

Still kinda is not worth it?
If you arent using any of the X570 chipset features why would you want the chipset?

It was.
OP is just reading too much into it.

Last gen the exact same thing happened but board manufacturers released updates.
B350 doesnt officially support Zen 2....but youll see people with B350 motherboards and Ryzen 3600s

lmao
I just bought a B450 MiniITX board FFS

Pray its from a good manufaturer and they will hopefully release a BIOS update.

I dodged a bullet waiting on a motherboard I'd been eyeing for a while (intending to upgrade the CPU shortly after).

I think this all ends up being needlessly messy, for buyers.

My B450 board already removed some older microcode (1000 series I think) to make room for the 3000 series why couldn't they just do the same again?

Yeah, I know it's en vogue to react and provide hot takes, but just give it time. I'm sure board manufacturers will update the BIOS.

Is there a chance a BIOS update could save a B450 for the future or no? I literally got mine this week thinking It'd be at least a little future proof for some reason.

WOW that is fucking lame. This whole time they were teasing/hinting that 4000-series would be compatible with B450/AM4.

Guess I'll just be buying a 3700X then

Glad I listened to the people in the PC building thread then last august. Went with 570 and an 3600(with the intention of upgrading later on if I feel the need. )

But for other people hopefully at least some older models support 4000 despite this.

I don't believe it, but this upcoming generation is the end of the road for this socket anyway.

B350 and X370 getting dropped was expected, since AMD left the decision up to the motherboard vendors as to whether they would support the Ryzen 3000 series. B450 getting dropkicked is a big surprise, given how late B550 was, how good the B450 motherboards were and how long B350 lasted. This means that there's a tonne of people who combined Ryzen 3000 chips with B450 motherboards now finding that the expected upgrade path is (officially) getting blocked off. (Unofficially, I would anticipate a bunch of motherboard vendors, particularly MSI who re-released their B450 motherboards for Ryzen 3000, to patch in support anyway)

Poor show, AMD.
