I'm not gonna lie. I started Ace Combat Zero out of pure boredom something like seven or eight years ago. In my mind it was a middle of the road series that was some Call of Duty shit. How could I not believe so? It was a series about jet fighters shooting at each other in the air.

Ace Combat in my mind was just some ultra jingoistic military romp about saving America from the Russians like every other game about military shit.

I had never been more wrong about anything in my life.

I couldn't stop playing Ace Combat Zero. I finished it in one sitting at 3 AM crying like a BABY because it was so GOOD. It was a really engrossing story that was actually about friendship and the horrors of war and making salient points about eradicating borders. Some real human shit.

But that's not even the best part. There is a real progression of your skills as a fighter fighting for peace that are anime as shit:

  • There is an area called the Roundtable that has seen its fair share of conflicts over the years, it's a legendary place where the "Ace" gets chosen from the people who survive this skirmish
  • You surviving it and downing so many jets nets you the nickname of "Demon Lord of the Roundtable" (how cool is that?)
  • Now other Aces wants to fight you after learning your reputation
  • Other squadrons are shitting their pants just hearing your nickname

And then it's just absolutely fantastic music, great gameplay, huge increase of stakes, you just feel like you're the one who can put an end to the war, while still making you understand that it's not just about you.

And then there is the final battle:

I won't spoil it but this was one of the best thing I've experienced. The music, the stakes, the fight, the context, the emotional impact of everything you've experienced going into this one single fight. It was perfect.

And that's what Ace Combat is. It's a game where there are feelings put into the fight. There is emotional resonance into what it is doing. Another series that is pulling it off well is the Yakuza series, well Ace Combat is kinda like that. It even has the potential to hit even harder depending on what you prefer.

Honestly Ace Combat should be way more popular if you're into this. I recommend Ace Combat 7 as a first game, it's a great revival of the series released on PS4/XB1/PC.

I just want to say that I can't wait for next-gen ACE COMBAT with no-compromises PSVR and PCVR support.

AC is shonen as fuck but also very dramatic and can be lowkey poetic.

In mission narration is over the top but the in between is usually much slower paced and character driven. It has also always a an amazing art direction and even if the symbolism are a tad bit IN YOUR FACE, it never fails to work, from the music, urgency, giant mechanical structures (bases or giant carrier sub / carrier plane / flying fortresses) to simple, radio shatter in a beautiful sky.

I also love how each game tried it own narration style :

AC4 stills about the boy seeing war and occupation.
AC5 with its CGI movies directly following the crew and plot.
AC0 with the live action footage, interviews of formers pilots who met us (player) in the skies and how they are now back into civilian life years later

its honestly VERY good. Sure can be cheesy but it made great impressions.

As a fan of Shounen anime, absurd and insane BS, and crazy action movie junk. I played all the notable Ace Combat games and feel like I was sorely misled in how ridiculous they are. There's some anime-like stuff in there and they aren't realistic for sure, but ultimately it was still relatively samey jet dogfight scenarios.

The games are good, but I feel like to really get the hype you have to already be predisposed to the idea of thinking that jets and dogfighting as a concept are already interesting, which frankly I'm not. So I guess I was hoping it would sell me beyond that initial idea. I felt I was sold by some people that AC was Zone of the Enders with Jets, but instead just got slightly more anime Top Gun.

The music and this video and memes about Pixy from a Discord server I am are all I know about AC Zero

And I really want to play it lol

Sadly AC7 has really bad regional pricing so I'm waiting for a good sale.

I actually think Zero was a low point in the series after 4 and 5. Except for that final mission, of course, which might as well be the highest high in the entire series.

But 5 was probably the most anime of all, and that's my favorite so I will give you a point there. I missed having your team and people giving you orders being actual characters, as anime as they were. Made for a much crazier story than what's possible with everyone being anonymous and professional. Fortunately 7 somewhat returned to that, though still not as much as I'd like.

I have recently gotten into Ace Combat with 7. I haven't beaten it yet, but I intend to.

I really, really wish that the devs remaster every past game in the series. I want AC7 to be the Yakuza 0 of the franchise, in that it introduces the series to such a big base of new players that the publisher rereleases all the previous ones.

I've only ever played 4 and was surprised that it had a story. A good one at that.

I honestly think 4 was the best story in the franchise. AC always seems to have a "few steps forward, few steps back" approach--every game does some things much better than their predecessor, but other things not so great. AC5 had a lot more planes and mission variety, but a weaker plot--and the planes themselves sort of ended up replacing the ability to select an SP Weapon. 6 had a massive increase in the scale of battle, and the allied assault mechanic was awesome, but the story felt weaker, and no mission really stood out that much. 7 had great variety and a fun plot, but missed allied/wingman commands.

Wasn't it always pretty much anime? Didn't Ace Combat 3 have you flying in Outerspace or at least low orbit? The US didn't get that one so I can understand not realising how rediculous everything is.

Ace Combat has always had that manga/anime vibe running through it for most of its games, which just adds to the love I've had for this series. Then the music just cements it for me as a complete package.

Still more, its always been about flying some badass jets into combat!

If anything it needs to be more anime. If you're not getting a zenkai boost after narrowly avoiding death don't talk to me.

Anime top gun with giant rail guns to shoot down asteroids, ramjet accelerator ramp to put a laser module in orbit to attach it to a giant white bird shaped orbital plane, giant laser towers, giant air fortress and or flying carriers, icbm launcher / carrier hybrid mega submarines, super advanced stealth prototype fighters, orbital station used as kinetic projectile, overlong tunnels to flying through. Space elevator. Energy shield...

Ace combat is this close to gundam lol

Ace Combat is COOL. It's pure epicness. The series deserves so much to be more mainstream.

Ace Combat 5's story was so incredible.

Can't wait for Ace Combat 8 now that they nailed the formula with the DLC missions in AC7.

Ace Combat is basically Metal Gear but with planes. Half Anime, Half realistic military stuff, all awesome. I hope this series lives on forever.

See, lay it out in text and it sounds awesome but while playing it, it was presented in a way that made it feel kind of normal? It's hard to explain, I just didn't feel the hype it was trying to lay out for me, something about it was really missing the mark.

AC 3: Electrosphere definitely released worldwide because I remember playing it. I actually liked that one and I'm fond of it's presentation in particular. Kind of reminds me of the early Wipeout menu art style somewhat. I remember that space mission, although it was just a short one of thing (I think) and the final boss was cool too. My memory is foggy on this but I want to say that 3 is as close as they got to jumping the shark with all the futuristic stuff. I feel 7 is a lot more grounded in comparison.

You might know this but I want to say it for others who don't. We got the US release, but they did something very puzzling.

They took out the entire story out of the game.
They took the non-linear story routes too.

Electrosphere is a sci-fi story about multinational companies that are more powerful than countries duking it out. It has a Ghost in the Shell-esque vibe and presentation with anime characters and stuff. It's super good. They took that out entirely. You just play maps instead.

A fanpatch was released where they translated the original Japanese game and I heavily recommend it. The atmosphere and story is soooooooooo good.

Yeah, Ace Combat 3 was actually the first game in the series that had a rich storyline with a strong cast of characters. They just scrubbed that out entirely for the western release in order to save costs and fit the game on one CD.

For the next Ace Combat game I hope they bring back the squadron interaction like they had in 5. In 7 you really didn't interact much with anyone else and kind of forget they're there. Also give me more Nagase.

Shounen I guess is accurate. Usually I just say "Top Gun + Star Wars", because it's a mix of "I love planes" and "crazy stuff that we don't/can't do with planes". I mean to quote a few,
  • ACE5 has taking out a rogue satellite that will nuke a city AND dogfighting a space shuttle equipped with a tactical laser AND fighting two subs that repeatedly launch low atmosphere ballistic missiles.
  • ACE7 has you duking it out with basically Protoss Carriers from Starcraft. (Shields, drones, the works)
  • ACE0 basically makes you a matador against a post F-35 class aircraft with a tactical laser.
  • ACE3: space, nuff said

Agreed. I know folks love Mobius One, but Blaze and the Demons of Razgriz will always be my top tier for the chatter. You get to know the whole team.

But that's one of the other great things about these games; how your squadron always goes from losers to basically so feared that opposing squadrons want to bail out. And it works, because it feeds into what would normally be dissonance in other games: you HAVE personally downing the equivalent to the entire USAF. The only planes bad enough to face you have to bring a gun to a knife fight just to make it *fair*.
And then you bring the FALKEN which is basically bringing an X-Wing to a gun fight.

Part of the charm IMO, along with kick ass music.

Fav is still Electrosphere, which I don't think will ever be remade.

Those of you here still have a 3DS or a PSP laying around, don't disregard the portable AC games, especially the 3DS one.

Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy for the 3DS is basically an Ace Combat 2 Remake plot-wise with AC Zero squadron fight section style and AC6 modern controls. It's as close as you can get to a proper Ace Combat game back in the day. It's still pretty darn fun to play and if you're itching for some Ace Combat game while waiting for the next, get the 3DS one. It's poor naming since it's 100% not the same as Assault Horizon on the consoles.

I remember reading how they butchered the western release of AC3. Seeing all the content we missed out on...it was such a disappointment what we ended up getting. I remember AC2 being well received so I wondered they went cutting cost route for 3rd game?

Some of the Ace Combat games -- I think 4, 5, and 7 (and maybe 0, I don't remember), were written by a literal anime director. It was the guy who directed the Black Lagoon anime.

I remember playing a bootleg of the JPN version back when it came out. Of course I didn't understand it but it was crazy good. I loved it so much I picked up both soundtracks for it at the time. I still listen to "The Crew" regularly. I was so ready for the US release when it got cut back I was gutted. Ended up watching a long lets play years later. Did not disappoint.

I can't believe I bought a thrustmaster and never used it. Just bought Ace Combat 7 yesterday for $15 new. I agree with the original poster because I played he's come at 5 and it was one of the best flight simulations I played. Time for me to put my thrustmaster to good use.

From the arcade games to the power fantasy campaigns, it's just that good the way it strikes balance. Compare it to HAWX... which was super cheesy and not in a good way.

Funny story, my brother interest dropped at 3 and that was where mine picked up. Still haven't played 7 tho :C

I've been playing this series since Air Combat back in the day and I'm very pleasantly surprised by where this story has gone over the years.
