2023 was one of the best years for video games as we played a lot of greatest titles and new franchises that exceeded all expectations and we also saw one of the most devastating years for the gaming industry that was hit by a large wave of layoffs, losing more of a thousand employees during the entire 12 months.

And here we are, another year of bold predictions for video games, for 2024, this thread needs to be goal posting a single or multiple predictions about video game news and announcements even optional for gaming related entertainment (film & TV) to be expected with some examples like: bad news announcements "Xbox Series S has been discontinued" or "a massive leak hits Electronic Arts", games will be good like: "S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 will be GOTY" or an video game would be worse: "Suicide Squad loses one million players on the first week", dream game reveals like: "Banjo Threeie announced for Xbox and PC" or "Metroid Prime 4 has been re-revealed", etc, etc.

That's all for me, i'll posting my predictions immediately after being placed this thread to the public, and remember, Fortune favors the bold!

Don't forget to visiting our last year thread and previous years.

Microsoft releases their mobile App Store and has mobile native versions of MCC, Pentiment, Ori, Battletoads, Minecraft dungeons, etc in it on day one (in addition to existing games like Minecraft and Diablo Immortal and Candy Crush).

They have a partnership with Epic and Riot to put Wild Rift / TFT and Fortnite on there as well.

If they could pull that off I actually think it could end up being pretty huge.

Redfall makes a comeback by introducing one new region, a new quest type and two new characters: Buffy (yes, that's right, it's crossover time) and a character that uses the GLOO gun from Prey. More QoL improvements and Arkane Austin survives 2024 without any lay-offs pls i beg make it out alive

A new Banjo Kazooie game gets announced and it's 2D. Very Rayman Legends looking and it features all the characters you know and love. At least one car shown in the reveal trailer.

Hellblade 2 kicks ass thanks to great acting performance and a stellar soundtrack (Heilung 💘 )

Josh Sawyer announces that a new Pillars game is in the works. They gave him the big bucks.

Contraband's development gets halted.

Certain Affinity works on a Phantom Dust remake / reboot / sequel / all three.

Panzer Dragoon Saga remake.

- GTA 6 will be used as the main selling point for PS5 PRO, will have a special trailer for it.
- FF7 Rebirth actually delivers. Narrowly wins GOTY. Includes all the fan favorite moments and somehow nails the ending too without pissing people off. First mainline SP FF to hit 90 on metacritic since FF12.
- Kingdom Hearts 4 will have a big trailer with releaes year (2025) and platforms. KH3 will receive a PS5/ Series update and the entire collection will receive a Steam release with a new SKU to circumvent any sort of EGS deals.
- Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth will have over 30k concurrent players on Steam. Massive mainstream success eclipsing anything RGG studio done so far.
- A new Judgment game is announced, to be set in hawaii, with no Yagami however. But some characters from the first 2 games will return.
- FH6 comes out at the end of the year. Japan setting, Series/PC only. More focus on city enviroments.
- AC: Red will be bigger than either Odyssey or Valhalla. And it will also be an incredibly good game.
- Suicide Squad will flop massively, despite the game being better than anticipated
- Red Dead Redemption 1 will release on PC. Basic port, but does the job.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5/Series versions will be released. $20 upgrade for those who have the PS4/X1 version. 60 fps, 1440p base resolution using FSR to upscale to 4k, a couple of settings higher than the prev gen versions.

- PS5 Pro is a massive upgrade thanks to dedicated AI upscaling tech
- Hellblade is the best and most critically important Xbox exclusive.
- Microsoft has nothing else to show, claims "2025 is gonna be the year". Matt Booty gets the axe, replaced by Shannon Studstill
- Phil leaves, Sarah Bond takes over.
- Suicide Squad comes out and is actually good

Nintendo:

-Switch Neo is announced and released. Contains some new control method for the company (haptics?). Contains BC with digital and physical Switch games at $400 CDN. Launch titles are 3D Mario, new IP and Prime 4.

Sony:

-PS5 Pro announced and released. Price cut for base models. VR2 is mostly ignored. Main first party titles are a GoW remaster, a few new IPs and a Twisted Metal reboot.

Microsoft:

-Lots of titles get announced, but releases are relying more on third parties. A BIG western 3rd party starts to be corted for aquisition. No new hardware.

Not sure if these are bold predictions, but here we go:

- There will be no PS5 Pro in 2024. Speculation that Sony delayed its release internally to 2025.

- Sony announces sometime in 2024 that PS Portal sold 2 million units.

- Bluepoint and Team Asobi's next games are announced for 2025 release.

- Rumored PlayStation remakes/remasters are true. Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War Trilogy come to PS5 in 2024.

- Helldivers 2 and Concord release with modest success. Fairgame$ is canceled.

- No new single player PlayStation Studio games in 2024. Sony fills the calendar with SIE published third party games, third party exclusives, remakes and remasters.

- New SIE CEO says they are still investing in live service but refining their approach. Horizon live service game is formally announced.

- Nintendo announces and releases their new console in 2024. It is not called Switch 2, Switch Pro and Super Switch.

- 3D Mario game and Fire Emblem game announced as launch titles.

- Elden Ring is a launch window title for Nintendo's next console.

- Metroid Prime 2 & 3, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are released in 2024.

- Metroid Prime 4 reannounced for 2025 as a cross-gen title.

- Xbox sales continue to decline. A major European retailer stops selling Xbox. More rumours of a next gen Xbox circulate.

- Microsoft phases out Xbox Series S without a formal announcement. Xbox Series X gets a permanent $100 USD discount.

- Hellblade 2 announced for Fall 2024 release and then gets delayed to 2025.

- A key Xbox Studios game that was announced previously game gets cancelled.

- A stat comes out that more people bought Call of Duty 2024 on PS5 than played it on Game Pass.

- Persona 3 Reload and Silent Hill 2 scores less than 80 on Metacritic.

- Dragons Dogma 2 scores over 90 on Metacritic.

- FF7 Rebirth sells less than FF16 in the same time frame.

- No Persona 6 announcement in 2024. Reports of development issues.

- A major new mode is announced for EA FC 25.

- Grand Theft Auto 6 release date announced for June 2025.

- Valve announces new configurations for Steam Deck OLED. But no announcement of Steam Deck 2.

A game that has not yet been formally announced will be consensus GotY.

Sony will not have a major "Playstation Showcase". States of Play yes, Showcase no. PS5 Pro will be neither announced, nor released.

Nintendo will announce, but not release, their next console.

Sony and Microsoft will both close/"reorganise" multiple first-party studios. Big ones. Ones you have heard of. Ones that have made games you like.

- Sony and Microsoft each have at least two unannounced games for 2024 (no comment on the size, AAA status etc)

- PS5 Pro will launch at £500

- Silent Hill 2 remake will be bad

- COD will not launch day one on Game Pass

- Perfect Dark will either be cancelled or leaks regarding the development hell it has gone through will come out

- Series X price drop will become permanent in the new year, PS5 won't get an official price drop before March

- There will be no big (billion dollar) acquisitions from any of the platform holders

- FIFA will continue to fail to find a studio to partner with

- As cross-gen continues to be less of a thing, Series S will struggle even more

- Hellblade 2 will get a high 80s MC/OC

- PS5 will again outsell Xbox Series 3:1

- XCloud streaming will finally get an upgrade

- Switch 2 and PS5 Pro will be sold out more than 6 months after release, scalping will be off the charts

- Valve will announce something big regarding Steam OS

- Embracer will close down more studios and shop off others to potential suitors

- Take 2 will announce a marketing deal with PlayStation for GTA6

I'd honestly be surprised if the Switch 2 doesn't drop next year. Even now, most of what we know about the Switch 1's 2024 are either spin-offs, remasters, or remakes. The Switch 1 doesn't have a guaranteed 10+ million seller left besides probably Pokémon, & the one they could feasibly release next year (3D Mario) is likely being saved for the Switch 2's launch.

Could Nintendo wait until Early 2025, sure. But they'd risk losing too much momentum by not having a major tentpole title for most of 2024, & that was one of their big mistakes going into the Wii U.

It may not exactly be what people think of when saying "bold prediction" but I think that Dreadwolf will be a return to form for Bioware, won't be GOTY but still it will be good and have good interesting companions and a fun storyline which is what people want from Bioware and may turn around the conversations that you see on gaming forums about the studio.

Maybe I'm sniffing copium but they had a while to cook for this game and It's not trying to do anything weird for BW like being a GAAS co-op focused looter shooter like Anthem or doing a No Man's Sky like Andromeda (procedurally generated planets is whay ate up a lot of development time before they cut it). I know it was supposed to have GAAS elements at one point but that was a while ago and It was reboteed into full SP several years ago.

Again I don't know how "bold" it really is but with all the dooming about BW that there has been, some justified other not, on reddit, twitter, by clickbait youtubers and even major publications maybe it is actually bold.

-Outcast 2 will review better than Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

-Black Myth Wukong will make its release date and won't be a technical mess on launch.

-EA will announce a remaster of Dante's inferno.

-Ubisoft will actually release Skull and Bones, it'll get its low 70s meta and fade into obscurity. Ubi will also at some point show a new CGI piece for Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Darksiders IV will get leaked.

Silksong will announce another delay at TGAs

Microsoft will release South of Midnight and Avowed, but not Hellblade 2.

GreedFall 2 will be an 82 OC game.

NightDive will announce both The Darkness and Soul Reaver remasters.

Wonder Woman will become most anticipated game after Star Wars outlaws releases. (GTA will slip to 2026)

2K will show BioShock next and Judas in the same month, in a baffling marketing strategy that everyone will talk about for about 3 months.

Bamco will acquire Bloober team

S. T. A. L. K. E. R. 2 will be playable on launch.

Squeenix will bring back Vagrant story and/or Drakensang. It won't go well.

Stormgate will have a better story than StarCraft 2.

Microsoft will make deals with Hasbro and Disney to bring the Activision licensed games back from legal limbo. New Prototype will get announced. Raven will announce a new IP.

Embracer will continue laying off a bunch of people, but Alone in the Dark, Outast 2 and games by Saber will sell well, allowing them to stabilize a bit.

Plaion will re-reveal Echoes of the End, as well as finally announcing Kingdom Come 2

A new Borderlands will get teased.

Konami will release some more remaster collections

Sony will announce some more multiplayer focused acquisitions and there will be much Era moaning.

Epic will show off GenDesign's new IP

Age of Empires 2 will get a playable civilization from SE Africa.

Switch Successor officially announced, Fall 24 release, launch title is Metroid Prime 4
Nintendo
-Mario Warriors announced
-Metroid Prime 4 launches alongside Switch successor in October 2024
-TOTK gets a free update adding Master Mode (or Nintendo lies and adds full DLC)
- The Switch 2 gets announced before the Super Bowl and launches by September. The big launch title is Metroid Prime 4. A 3D Mario game is announced, but it doesn't come out until the holidays or 2025.
Now that's a bold prediction, as having Metroid Prime 4 as your main launch title would be the equivalent of Nintendo telling Japan (one of the biggest markets for the Switch 1) to go fuck themselves considering how irrelevant Metroid is over there. And it's not like the series sells a whole lot better elsewhere to make up for that. I'm not saying Metroid sells bad (outside of Japan), but it's not a guaranteed 10+ million seller.

Long story short, a guaranteed 10+ million selling heavy-hitter with global appeal is what the Switch 2 needs on Day 1. And of the franchises that have been missing for a while, 3D Mario is Nintendo's best (realistic) bet. Launching with MP4 (especially with no 3D Mario or Mario Kart 10 backing it up) would be the equivalent of putting all their chips on ARMS 2 or Xenoblade 4. Metroid just isn't big enough to be the main event & would risk alienating Japanese fans from the system off the bat.

Realistically, Nintendo needs a franchise with wider global appeal as their marquee launch title. And of the franchises that have been missing for a while, 3D Mario is their best (realistic) bet.
I should say I'm not a Nintendo guy myself but I would assume launch will have multiple titles, the other one being maybe new Animal Crossing?

Given EPD 5's schedule, Animal Crossing probably won't be ready until 2025. While the division did expand on staff after New Horizons launched, I'd imagine that development would've picked up more momentum after Splatoon 3's release.

- Microsoft buys one big independent studio (Larian would be my nightmare)
- Naughty Dog simultaneously announces two games, one new IP and Last of Us 3. One comes out in 2025, the other who knows.
- Switch 2 comes out but lacks a big system seller. Prime 4 does come out to critical acclaim but ain't no Mario/Zelda in sales.
- FF7 Rebirth gets good reviews but its plots general direction remains decisive.
- A big historic game designer passes away and this will become way more common.

Well, here's my shot.

Microsoft:

- A Developer Direct returns this January, however it is not an Xbox Bethesda one. It is an Xbox Blizzard one. Bethesda will be taking a break until E3. Focus will be on Hellblade 2, Towerborne, WoW, ESO, the Blizzard catalogue of games hitting GP and a shadowdrop from Double Fine.

- In the wake of the Starfield SEO fiasco, Microsoft will be a bit more aggressive with their relationships with the press, with more interviews, exclusive looks, etc. taken in-house to Xbox Wire.

- Indiana Jones will officially be announced as Xbox exclusive and dated for early 2025. Blade will be alluded to being exclusive "We take things on a case by case basis and see the benefits to the ecosystem for an exclusive Marvel character."

- FTC drops their appeal in March.

- Perfect Dark and Everwild will receive gameplay, both rebooted from original vision. The former is now a third-person/first-person hybrid in the vein of PD Zero and the recent Deus Ex titles, the latter is a survival game with non-violent Monster Hunter and Rune Factory elements (you are fighting the corruption to save the creatures and befriend them).

- Starfield: Shattered Space is delayed(?) into Holiday 2024, serving as a soft relaunch.

- Hellblade 2 is May, Avowed is October.

- Phil Spencer will address the sales of consoles acknowledging an internal focus on a "sustainable entry point and vertical of the Xbox ecosystem" and will allude to a "shortened console generation cycle." Xbox's third party offerings to other ecosystems will be restricted to ongoing titles, future CoD and Minecraft games and "games for which we decide to unilaterally disband the publishing contract" (Lucky's Tale, As Dusk Falls). Another Microsoft Exec will contradict this leading to more muddled messaging. But the buck stops with Phil.

- Retaining this from last year: Halo Tatanka will be a seperate launcher, release crossplatform with 343 leading creative, Certain Affinity developing the Xbox and PC version and TiMi the mobile Sku which will launch concurrently.

- Microsoft will begin development on a mobile launcher and will have considerable debate over the best course of action going forward on whether to delist their apps from Apple and Google Play or keep them. Ultimately, they will announce 3 years of support for all apps barring Teams and Outlook on Apple and Google but will test run delisting them in smaller markets.

- The Fallout show will be the moment that makes Xbox consider Transmedia more than a pet project. Xbox Film Studios will be launched as a label to coincide with the release of the Minecraft film, consolidating ABK and Xbox's existing (small) transmedia teams.

- Towards the end of 2024, it will be announced that Battle.net and the Xbox App will merge into a separate launcher, retaining the Battle.net name, in 2025.

- Bethesda.net accounts will be shuttered. In the wake of the Blade controvery, Xbox and Bethesda branding will be alligned. All ongoing and future titles from Bethesda will be updated to have an Xbox Games Studio and Bethesda splashscreen.

Sony:

- Sony will hire a new CEO for SIE from outside the company. It will not be Bobby Kotick. It could be Andrew Wilson.

- Wolverine will be re-revealed at the TGAs. The leaks will be acknowledged in the reveal in a meta-way (think a newspaper headline reading "Leaks of Mutant Activity Scares POTUS")

- MLB The Show will launch day and date on Game Pass and PS+ Extra.

- Concord will be an unexpected hit, generating solid ROI for SIE and positive word of mouth.

- Jim Ryan will be semi-outspoken on the media circuit, calling out "unsustainable internal focuses he tried to control" and "the decline of civility between platform holders". The irony will be lost on him.

- PSVR2 will be discontinued with Sony porting non-PS IP (more Firewall, less Horizon) titles from VR1 and 2 to the Meta Quest.

- PS Portal will support cloud streaming and the PS Portal Deluxe will be sold in Holiday 2024 alongside the PS5 Pro. It will sell well.

- Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Tsushima 2 are set to be the Christmas games. The former is delayed, the latter is released. Like Spider-Man 2 and Ragnarok, it is built on the same map as Ghost 1. However, unlike those two, there is a 7 year timeskip (between the two invasions) and the map has changed drastically. Controversially, the game launches concurrent with Legends 2. Tsushima 2 costs $60, Legends 2 costs $30 or you can buy them together for $70.

- The Final Shape will be a modest hit. Enough to retain Bungie's independence but not a gamechanging moment.

- Sony will sign a game from an "offshoot" of an MS owned studio (think Maverick Games or WolfEye)

- Contrary to belief, Sony will not shut down a studio. They will however spin off Media Molecule into an independent entity and will retain a minority, non-voting stake (think MS and Bungie).

- Rise of the Ronin will lead to Sony acquiring Team Ninja and Omega Force (along with associated IP) from Koei Tecmo.

Nintendo:

- Switch 2 will suffer out of the gate from muddled messaging and a bad name. "Nintendo SwIItch" or something similarly stupid. However, a killer launch lineup (including a crossgen Metroid Prime 4 and exclusive 3D Mario), competitive pricing and power and retention of the hybrid model will more than make up for this and the thing will be hard to find. Christmas release.

- Switch 2 will have a longer crossgen period than we're used to from Nintendo.

- Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776 are being remade. Thracia an interquel in the game. Controversial changes are made to tone and difficulty but game is well received.

- Switch 2 will be backwards compatible, but certain titles will still be ported and "remastered".

- Nintendo will announce a brand new studio based in North America that they are building from the ground up.

- Princess Peach Showtime will be the second-best Mario or Mario-adjacent title of the year.

- Third Party will go above and beyond for Switch 2 launch.

- After the rights to Zelda and Pokemon went to Sony and Legendary respectively, Universal will not make the same game again, signing a right of first refusal deal with Nintendo for any future films.

Third Party:

- Dragon Age 4 will be the Starfield of 2024. A well received, enjoyable game that ends up dunked on due to BG3 and the studio's prior pedigree. It is similarly reviewed in the mid 80s and similarly not GOTY nominated at TGAs.

- GTA VI will have independent marketing rights not tied to PlayStation or Xbox, and a quick reveal will be shown at Summer Games Fest like Elden Ring had. Dated Spring 2025.

- Disney will not acquire EA or any publisher. But they will start rebuilding their games division through strategic acquisitions like DLaLa.

- Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League will receive solid reviews but will sell poorly.

- KOTOR Remake will be cancelled by Embracer, rights picked up off the waiver wire, ironically enough, by EA and will relaunch as a fully multiplatform initiative. Announce at TGAs, release in 2028.

- 2K's "Overwatch-style game" will finally be revealed at Gamescom ONL

- KOTOR Remake will switch developers again.

Misc:

- The ESA will put the rights to the E3 branding, trademarks and iconography up for auction. Tencent, NetEase, Geoff Keighley and Microsoft will be named as interested parties but the price per value prop will be too high and nobody will end up buying.

- All three platforms will have in-person showcases this year.

- Acquisitions will be slowed substantially this year.

- Riot Games and Blizzard will have an unexpected crossover encompassing in-game events, concerts, ads, Game Pass perks and more.

- Epic will acquire Remedy.
