I don't like Persona Q, Devil Survivor and Soul Hacker, all for gameplay reasons.

They are great games but not all at once. Thats like 500+ hours of JRPG right there lol.

That said, SMT4 first. Its great.

The reason I bought all of them at once, and why I'm hoarding 3DS games in general is that I assume have had somewhat limited print runs and I want to get them while I still can. I'd rather get it now and sit on it than miss them and never get a chance to play them as a physical release. I find I'm much more likely to play physical copies of games.

There are countless numbers of games from bygone eras that I wanted to play and thought, well... I'll buy it eventually. Except now those games go for a lot of money now.

You only bought good games, don't worry. I also advise against going through them in succession and possibly alternate the gameplays (e.g. IV - > DeSu - > PQ - > IV:A and so on)

Either they will forever stay in your backlog. Or you will never need to buy another game.

SMTIV is a great introduction to the series, both through the mechanics opening up slowly through its opening dungeon, and through the plot and setting being revealed to the characters.

Apparently I'm the only one who loved PQ? The character were one dimensional but everithing else? Gameplay awesome, music addictive, the chibi style cute not annoying, the dungeon were diverseted and fun. Bought EO4 very fast afterwards.
But yeah, the game is for P3 and P4 fans mainly.
OP you from eu? Those games already cost a fortune. Especially Overclocked.

Start with SMT4 and do the sequel then play Soul Hackers. Then Devil Survivor and Strange Journey.

Start with Soul Hackers. I've purchased most of those as well, and it's the only one I've ever finished. I found it to have an awesome balance between difficulty and pacing the others lacked. They all rule though!

I had a friend who went out and bought every single Resident Evil game that was on the wii after loving RE4 thinking they all had the same gameplay. Like why would you do that.

Don't be ashamed to play SMTIV with a map or a guide !

It's a great game, but the ingame map is insanely bad, and there're no objectives markers.

Other then soul hackers and persona q all those are great games. The devil survivor games are my favorites on that list.

I would say start with 4 and end with 4 Apocalypse. They mostly share the same characters and locations so it might be best to space them appart. Strange Journey was my favorite game on DS and the Devil Survivor games were amazing too. I did not get too far into Soul Hackers, all I can say is it's the most dated one of the bunch. All in all, you did not make a mistake, have fun!

That's:

Persona Q
Shin Megami Tensai 4
Shin Megami Tensai 4 Apocalypse
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2
Shin Megami Tensei Summoner: Soul Hackers

Why did I do this? Fuck if I know. Did I make a huge mistake? You tell me. What do I do?

I've never played a single game in this series.

  1. Devil Survivor first, great intro to the series. Much easier than the rest of the titles
  2. Then Strange Journey
  3. Then do 4
  4. swing back to Devil Survivor 2
  5. then do 4 Apocalypse
Order is built on difficulty curve and to combat mechanic repetition/boredom.

Canceled Soul Hackers and Persona Q orders since those seem to be the weakest. Gonna start with SMT4

List adjusted accordingly. 4 is a pretty tough start, that first wall is a bitch. Best of luck.

The Devil Survivor games are the coolest things ever. The first one is super dark and the second one is a more cheerful take on the universe ending and everything dying a horrible death.

Then again I'm a sucker for SRPGs so maybe they just pushed all the right buttons for me.

You bought some of the best RPGs ever made. I bought a 3DS just for those games. SMT (including its spin-offs) is the best RPG franchise in existence, have fun.

Edit: You cancelled Soul Hackers? Are you fucking serious? WTF?

You impulse bought a pile of long RPG's. That's probably not wise lol.

Noooo don't cancel Soul Hackers

All of those games are incredible OP, though PQ is a little weak as either an EO game or an SMT game. I say start with SMT4 and go from there. Strange Journey in particular is a masterpiece, IMO.

Just FYI. I also bought Fire Emblem Fates Conquest and Birthright because I'm sick in the head. Oh yeah, and Mario Kart 7, Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga Remake, Smash 3DS, and Monster Hunter Stories.

My goal is to own the best the 3DS has to offer. I have about 30 or so games now.

What is it people like about the SMT series? How does it differ from the Persona series? How do the spin offs differ? Like, what's the difference between Summoner Survivor and Digital Devil Saga and such?

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

I've never played a single game in this series.

Persona Q is like a crossover between Persona and Etrian Odyssey. If you've ever enjoyed one of those then I bet you enjoy PQ too.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is, well, the fourth numbered SMT game. It's one of two games (the other being SMT4A) in this list to have the series' renowned Press Turn combat system. It has a diabolically brutal first dungeon and then actually gets pretty easy after that. It's a good starting point IF you're willing to bash your head against exactly one wall, early on.

Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse is a quasi-sequel to SMT4. I'd play it afterwards. It has some nice gameplay improvements and far better game balance, but deviates from the original in story/tone. I think the trade-off is more than worth it.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux is a 3DS re-release of SMT: Strange Journey on the DS. It's not numbered, but its still considered part of the "mainline" SMT series. The original is renowned for being brutally difficult, but the re-release adds some difficulty options (and thus, an easy mode). Aside from PQ, it's the most dungeon-crawler-y of the bunch and has a novel setting/premise compared to the other games.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked is also a re-release of a DS game. The Devil Survivor games are Tactics RPGs with a SMT twist. If you love Tactics RPGs, maybe these will be a good starting point, but I remember this game also being quite challenging. So, that might affect your decision.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 might refer to SMT: DS2 Record Breaker, which is, once more, a 3DS re-release of a DS game. Either way, it's the second Devil Survivor game, but isn't a direct sequel. You can play them in whatever order. I didn't play much of this one, because the story didn't grab me and I don't love the mechanics of the Devil Survivor games in general. Maybe one day. I can't really comment on this one, but I think its supposed to be the easier of the two games?

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers is a 3DS rerelease of a DS ga-- just kidding! It's a 3DS rerelease of a Sega Saturn game. You can definitely still tell it was originally a Sega Saturn game. If you want some Actual Honest-To-God Old-School Video Gaming, this is easily your best bet. I like it a fair amount, but I'd never recommend it to anyone unless I was sure they were the sort of person who would be interested in a Sega Saturn JRPG.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is honestly the best experience I've had with a JRPG in the last 15 years or so

I understand where you're coming from but Nintendo is utterly untrustworthy when it comes to digital distribution. Plus, I like having a physical collection I can display and sell.
