Pichu isn't the face of the series anymore (if he ever truly was). Pikachu is, was and probably always will be. If anything Pichu's the one with the high peak in a particular time frame, but it's just another Pokemon now, maybe more well known than the other non-gen 1 mons.

Meanwhile the Minecraft guy has been around 9 years, and remains at the forefront of marketing of the second highest selling game of all time. He's not exactly a flash in the pan.

Famous =/= popular

We're talking about the most widely acknowledged character worldwide since 2000, Pichu has been far too prevelant across far too many forms of media for it to not take the crown, again not to mention it's ties with Pikachu.

We're clearly coming at this from two different angles.

So to sidestep the impasse, can you honestly say the same applies for Lugia and Isabel?

Do people know the Minecraft guy is called Steve. I can't remember if they tell you when you play.

Lol at people saying Master Chief or Kratos. Steve from Minecraft or the Creeper are infinitely more well known. Angry Birds as well. Overwatch is also bigger than Halo and GoW.

Obviously, everyone responding is going to have a lot of bias from their own personal experiences that may not reflect the rest of the gaming world. That said, I don't even know some of the characters people are mentioning.

I think Commander Shepard, while not the very most famous, would be pretty high on that list. More so than things some people are mentioning at least. Again, admitting my considerations will be biased on my own experiences.

Overall, Master Chief and Steve do seem like the most iconic and well known characters.

I think the thread needs to be clear on the definition.

If someone looks at the character and goes "Oh yea thats from X franchise" Then yea characters like Steve,Master Chief,Pichu ( Heck almost any pokemon )..etc are probably the most iconic. Heck anyone from Asassins creed with the hoodie most people would instantly recognize.

But if the criteria is "Oh yea thats X character" and actually names it that changes things quite a bit. I dont think as many people actually know the name of the minecraft dude. Or recognize him as a character.

I never realized there was a Minecraft guy, thought it was always just some random generic block person.

Master Chief wins.

Master Chief aka "Halo Guy," or Steve aka "Minecraft guy." I'd lean towards Master chief because he's an actual character that is recognizable, not like an accidental recognition. 'Steve' is barely a character to anybody who recognizes him, but the art style is so recognizable in Minecraft that most people would be like "Oh... that's minecraft."

I think you could even change the art style of Halo guy / Masterchief and people would recognize it. Where, if you changed the art style of Minecraft guy he wouldn't be recognizable as anything other than just a generic sprite.

In the West?

1. Pichu
2. Lugia
3. Isabel (AC)
4. Steve
5. Master Chief

In the West... I've never heard of those top 3. I only know Steve because people say he's Steve.

If you showed me photos of Pichu I'd say "Oh ... pikachu? That's older than 2000..."

Other than the last two, this is the list of trying to hard to be contrarian

This thread just goes to show how extreme the forum bubble is. People are literally saying Kratos from God of wr when we all know after Ascension the entire franchise was on life support. Just like gears with judgement. The two GOW series mirrors each other up to that point I would say with gears barely edging out GoW in popularity.

I mean the question asked about famous video game characters from 2000 and people are referring to a game that has only been out 3 months.

You don't have to be a Microsoft Stan to see its either Minecraft Steve or if you want an actual character instead of an avatar Master chief.

Minecraft is literally the 3rd best selling game of all time.

Again, most famous =/= most popular, it means most well known. Steve simply hasn't been around long enough to take that accolade.

To be honest, taking the arguments here I to account, I'd say Pichu and Master Chief are good contenders.
Bro being famous directly correlates with popularity, stop trying to claim Pichu is relevant. Literally nobody in here agrees with you lol.

The green phallic creature from Minecraft is more well known than any of the pokemon or big burly AAA dudes mentioned in this thread.

It's not about just currently, it's about anything post-2000.

Leading up to September 2007, the same hype you see for a game like Fortnite was the hype level for Halo 3.

Im kinda shocked at how many of you are either too young to remember or just are flat out not willing to admit what it was like.

You could walk out of class and hear your peers talking about it, your teachers talking about it, your janitors were talking about it. Even if you didn't game at all, you knew about Halo 3.

And who was front and center of all that marketing?

On the face of Dorito bags and Mountain Dew bottles across the country, before this was a normal thing?

Master Chief.

Even if you don't know the name, you saw the suit and the helmet and you knew the game.

Master Chief or Minecraft Steve.

Halo was king in the early 2000s. Halo 2's release was a huge gaming event. Even if not many know Steve by his name, they know him as the minecraft guy.

All of the usual picks have been done, so I'll say a new one:

Bowser Jr. I'm pretty sure is known by most casuals. He debuted in Super Mario Sunshine (2002)

Waluigi too in Mario Tennis. That was early 2000s I think.

I mean it's not like those two are carrying a franchise like Steve or MC, but I'm sure they're just as well known due to NSMB and Mario Sports games

Sounds like recency bias to me. What, you think all of the kids and parents growing up and getting involved in the Pokemon franchise — the largest in the world — just forgot who Picchu was? You think Pokemon Go — the most played game in the world — hasn't taught anyone his name?

Yeah seriously though its Master Chief. Even as a kid when Halo 2 first came out everyone knew who he was even if they never had an Xbox. Some could say Minecraft guy or "Steve" but many kids I knew never played Minecraft. But they all knew Master Chief.

Looking past Master Chief or Minecraft guy (because those seem like slam dunks, and I'd say MC ahead of Minecraft guy only because Minecraft guy is kind of accidentally recognizable and isn't really a character), trying to think of another legitimately recognizable character, it could be Trevor from GTAV. The game sold like 80million copies and is the 3rd highest selling game ever (right?), he's in GTA Online which is insanely still popular, and he's also become a recognizable character actor over the last 5 years since GTAV, appearing in Westworld, Better Call Saul, broad city, The Walking Dead, etc.

That could be recency bias though, but trying to think of any other games over the last 18 years, GTAV is one of the most popular, he's got a very noticable unmissable personality (not just a forgettable sprite), and he was probably the most recognizable character from that game, as Michael and Franklin were both pretty boring.

Red from Angry Birds. Master Chief is pretty famous, but not even in the same league as Red.

Pichu is just such a bad pull among the hundreds of Pokemon we've had since the year 2000. I'd argue Lucario is more relevant and famous. Togepi is probably up there as well.

Honestly, at this exact point in history, Waluigi is probably the most famous Nintendo character introduced since 2000. But he's still not even close to Minecraft or Angry Birds characters.

Master Chief. Red/Steve/Clash of Clans Barbarian are probably the most recognizable, but I wouldn't classify them as the most famous since most probably don't know them beyond that guy on the cover/promo art for Minecraft/Angry Birds/Clash of Clans.

According to Wiki GTAV has shipped 95 million copies and is largely still being sold at retail price. GTAV is as well known as Minecraft, if not more.

If we throw in all the 3D GTA game, as they came after 2000, it could arguably be any of the protagonists (mainly Claude, CJ or Trevor).

I'm gonna say Trevor again. He needs to cross over into Mario Kart or Smash for maximum lols

Edit: I completely forgot about Miis. Thougb since they are stand-ins for the player they potentially have infinite utility. WiiSports sold tens of millions of Wiis. It's almost not fair. :P

Minecraft broke 100 million 2 years ago, is available on ten million devices, and has loads of licensed toys.

Minecraft is insanely popular with kids. Of course GTAV is very popular too, but Minecraft has it's one and only mascot to focus on (Steve).

I think you're grossly overestimating CJ's popularity. CJ isn't even Master Chief tier these days. You can ask 50 random people (not just core gamers, but casuals and non gamers too) and I'll bet there are a lot more people who recognize Angry Birds and "that character from Minecraft".

Master Chief is the only answer. Has to be.

Ok I realized even if ppl don't know what his name is Steve from Minecraft would get recognized instantly. Same for Master Chief.

Between those 2.

Halo has a relatively narrow demographic (primarily US, primarily 16-35 males) and has been rapidly dropping in relevancy. Maybe at the height of its popularity, but there's no way it's beating out something like the Minecraft Creeper or an Angry Bird for non-gamer recognition these days.

As far as indie games go, I'd guess Freddie from FNAF would be the most famous with maybe Shovel Knight in 2nd place. Although I swear that for 6-12 months after the game came out, Undertale characters (especially Papyrus) were everywhere online.
