Sleigh Bells. Treats. I can't convince any of my friends that this is worth listening to, maybe I can get someone on Era converted. Once your ears get used to the clipping, because, "noise pop", it's really nuanced. The distortion is toned down on their newer albums which are also all very good, but their first attempt is my favorite. Feels truest to their initial vision. Even listening at half volume feels abusive to your eardrums. Careful with track 8, Crown on the Ground.

His profile has raised in the years since I think but still, I've yet to meet someone IRL who's heard of him so I'm using that to reference the topic.

Also, Sun,Cloud by Luke Howard

No one heard of as in our current generation?

I would say Marvin Gaye's What's Going On album.

Don't sleep on this album folks. She recorded all of the instruments herself and mixed everything. Really talented woman, and I'm sad I missed her when she was in my area.
Yeah, I feel like she's going places; This is an utterly accessible pop-rock record full of catchy riffs and memorable hooks. But she hasn't really broken yet so she's still just playing bar gigs.

Bonobo's music gets a lot of use on NPR as transitional music or music during promo spots, so lots of people would probably recognize his music even if they don't recognize the name.

Interesting! UK here and occasionally heard it as bg music to things. Whole album is great, wish those who hear it as that could hear the whole thing.

I do indeed love the album and the artist. I was actually listening to Animal Magic this morning. It makes excellent background music for work.

One of my favorite semi-obscure artists is Micachu, a classically trained composer-turned hip hop producer-turned art-pop iconoclast. In recent years she's been composing film scores and got an Oscar nod for her work on Jackie.

Her first album still sounds like nothing I've ever heard:

My favorite post-rock album by a band so obscure they only have two tracks uploaded on YouTube and one on Spotify. I wouldn't be able to listen to them if I hadn't already ripped the two CDs they put out. Their brand of post-rock is less quiet and swells; instead it's more more straight up mathy instrumentals, like a more sensitive Don Caballero. Love this record.

Any Strange Music fans on Era?

I really like 13 by CES Cru. Solid production, solid bars, high replay value.

And why does no one talk about Overly Dedicated when discussing Kendrick Lamar's discography? It's better than Section.80 imo.

Cool idea for a thread. Here is my contribution:

John Frusciante - Shadows Collide with People(You can tell how much influence he had on RHCP as far as melodies and hooks go in their By the Way era) Can't recommend this album enough. It's one of my favorites of all time

Vikesh Kapoor's album "The Ballad of Willy Robbins" and well, Vikesh Kapoor in general. He only released one album 2014, and there's some older songs and stuff from before that and he released a single last year that was a proper recording of a song he's done on live shows. He is straight up one of my alltime favourite artists. Perfect vocals, great lyrics and themes. He very plays acustic folk music with political texts in some songs and more personal introspective songs. So Bob Dylan influences are quiet clear (and something he is open with).

Here's a live performance of some songs with great quality.

And here's a playlist with all the songs on the album on his youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOYBZEn7_SuBJQ_WYlo9RwBytSPAcc8Gk

just hands down one of my alltime favourites. I wish he would do more music again, but i believe he is focused on photography nowadays.

"Down by the river there she was
pinning the line and drying her clothes
from the hill I watched as my love stood alone
Fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well"

Never heard of Tricot before a week or two ago, but they've been around for over five years. Likely has to do with them being (1) based in Japan and (b) taking on math-rock influences. Such a good album. They also have an episode from Audiotree that'll probably be out in a few weeks and it's really good.

Yeah, I have a few I can think of off the top of my head:

TEPR - Cote Ouest

vi8AwUF.jpg

Very cool electro. Just about every song ends up completely differently than how it starts which makes it a fun listen. Somehow manages to be very dancey while also sounding a bit like an old school video game soundtrack.

PVT - Homosapien

YOJgJfV.jpg

Kind of trippy electronic post-rock. Very diverse exploration of genres on this album while still being very cohesive. I've never heard anyone ever mention this band let alone the album which is a shame. The album prior to this one Church with No Magic feels like the Part 1 of this one and it's just as good as well.

Femme Fatale - From the Abundance of the Heart, the Mouth Speaks

bdHmn3o.jpg

Aggressive post-hardcore. If you're familiar with Death From Above 1979, that project was originally the side project of this. More of an EP, but worth bringing up imo since I've never heard anyone mention it outside of DFA1979's forums. I'm not really that in to hardcore, but this works for me for some reason. Probably the subtle mix of synths and tightness of each song (most of which are under 2 minutes).

I really love this short lived band called Fair to Midland and these two albums have been in regular rotation on my pmps for years:

Fables from a Mayfly - What I tell you three times is true

I feel like The Decemberists are more well known for their post-Hazards of Love albums, but this to me is their seminal album

This is the greatest post-rock album of all time. It's only 4 tracks long. The band have never done anything remotely of the same quality since.

Yndi Halda - Enjoy Eternal Bliss

Saltillo - Ganglion; this album got me into Trip-hop, can listen to it fully and not want to skip a single song.

Atha - Escape Velocity; I found this album on cd baby many years ago, I've always liked ambient music that you can just sit back close your eyes and drift away to and this is one of the best imo, has a great sci-fi/space vibe to it.

These probably have recognition, but:

Fear My Thoughts - Hell Sweet Hell (some really good melodeath. "My Delight" is worth the price of admission alone)
Uneven Structure - Februus (if you like Textures, then this is right up your alley. Definitely in my top 5 of all time)

John Frusciante, Josh Klinghoffer (past and current RHCP guitarists), and Joe Lally (Fugazi drummer) made two albums together under the name Ataxia over the course of a few weeks and then disbanded. I like the first album better but they're both pretty great.

It's a damn perfect album, it really is made for summers and cold drinks.
The only place I ever hear their stuff is as incidental music in The Inbetweeners.

Wishing Like A Mountain And Thinking Like The Sea by Poi Dog Pondering is one of my all time favorites and I've never met anyone else in real life that knows the band at all. Great acoustic folksy rock music with great naturalistic point of view of life. The opening track, "Bury Me Deep" is such a pleasant song and it's about not fearing death and becoming one with the Earth again when it happens.
