Blegh personality, Blegh design. Such a basic princess, feels like a soulless other-peach but with a star and in blue. Daisy and Pauline exude so much more style and differing attitudes and are good compliments to Peach.

thats funny considering shes the only one with an actual backstory... and its a pretty good /sad one at that

Wasn't her backstory unintentional? I remember it wasn't planned to be in the game.

In any case, I kinda have to agree that she doesn't have much of a personality, being more of a passive overseer.

Oh yeah, I forgot about him. Galaxy and Partners in Time were his chances and he missed them
Yeah. I don't expect any Mario Land stuff to ever be referenced in the mainline platformers these days (as cool as it would be) but it'd be nice to see them pop up in the RPGs or the sports games (aside from Daisy, anyway).

At least Mario Maker had the Sky Pop.

The Mario RPG's have a lot of great enemies they could use again, but they never appear in the main series.

The whole game was kind of a failure in retrospect. Zero challenge, way too much repetition, some very ugly worlds (that forest world, yikes) and very bad boss fights. Controversial opinion, I know, but the game feels very over-rated to me. Control-wise it is the greatest 3D platformer however. Put that control scheme in a linear Mario game please.

I don't think anybody was arguing that the game isn't successful from a sales and popularity standpoint. Hot take guy seems to feel that the game was unsuccessful in living up to the hype and that review scores and sales are a bad indicator of how good a game is and don't account for the myriad of factors that effect what people like in a game.

What is a good indicator then? Unless you're trying to say that the only good indicator is ourselves, but then that defeats the whole purpose of indication in the first place.

The forest world with the robots was one of the best. Not counting the obvious brief worlds (cloud, the ruined kingdom, the later moons), the weakest is probably just the first lake kingdom or the snow kingdom if only because they're small

They're great heels with a neat special theme that fits in with the rest of the game. The mech fight alone elevates them beyond most of the series' generic henchmen. Much stronger thematically and mechanically than Boom Boom and Pom Pom

They weren't bad, just.. kinda dull and forgettable. They prolly won't appear in any new games because they've served their purpose and aren't really needed anymore.

Would rather have the Koopalings tho.

Which actually minorly contributes to why I dont like her as well. I like Mario characters as colorful and cartoony personalities, not fan fiction esque characters with "deep lore". Rosalina is too subtle of a personality to mesh well with the other Mario characters for me. Mario and Peach will always be the standard for the "Vanilla" characters but somehow Rosalina is so much more plain to me.

I wonder why no one ever says Mario has a great backstory considering all the shit he went through as a baby.

Never mind that the whole point of a Metacritic score is to have a consensus of opinion.

Plus, the bolded seems a bit harsh on reviewers. The whole point of Metacritic scores is to have a consensus of opinions. And most reviews do go in-depth about what they like in the game.
The poster said that the game was a misfire and then people responded with "but it's popular" and "but it's rated highly" which aren't good arguments. Not that the poster made a good argument themselves. The concept of scores in general has been heavily criticized because they are very arbitrary and subjective. Different reviewers have different standards and their standards change from game to game and are influenced by lots of extraneous variables. Reviews are fine in themselves because you can read what the reviewer's experience was and what they felt and then determine for yourself how you feel about their review. Better reviews will have a lot of detail about the content of the games and issues experienced and keep subjectivity to minimum to leave it to the consumer to decide.

All these hate against the Broodals like:

giphy.gif

Nintendo seized the chance to use rabbits in top hats for a wedding themed game that has it showdown on the moon. When it's time for a new setting we're likely to expect some new villains.

Ya they weren't all that were they? I feel like bowser doesn't need minions. The bosses could have been better in the game for the most part. Shame really cause Galaxy had tremendous bosses.

What? No. No no no.

The Broodals are great. They're an evil wedding planning firm. They have the old-timey deep south elite look to them. They're rabbits because of the Japanese myth about rabbits on the moon. Also, they wear hats, so they're like the rabbits that magicians pull out of their hats.

Great punny names. Great battles. Great leitmotif that plays when their airship arrives.

I love everything about them. I hope they're playable in the next Mario Kart.

No. They cute minions. Fits the "moon" theme with the Japanese legend.
Bowser wants to marry Peach -> honeymoon -> moon -> rabbits.
It was fun. I don't think they created those minibosses in order to make them come back again (maybe in Odyssey 2, but not in Super Mario 2D or Super Mario Sunshine 2 or whatever). So they are good characters because they fits well their role.

It's hard to say anything bad about the Broodals after Nintendo's recent freeze on new characters in Mario games. Going through the NSMB series, two Paper Marios, and 3D Land was brutal on that front.

(At least 3D World had those Sprixie things.)

More original Mario characters, please!

Nabbit and Boom Boom's sister were new characters.

I thought they were pretty boring and forgettable. Really wish the Koopalings were used instead, but everyone hates them now, so I dunno?? Maybe new villains was the right call. Just poor execution, imo.

I mean, the Mario games are hardly story heavy weights and most of the characters only really become cemented with repeated use.

Didn't really care for them. I've said this before, but I think they have to get rid of the three hit boss thing. Once you feel like it's picking up, it's over.

Outside of Bowser, most Mario villains come across as rather annoying or bland to me. I'd completely forgotten these lot were a thing until I saw this thread

They were pretty cool, I guess. It's really lame how you keep fighting them, and how some of them take zero effort to defeat every time, like the one that throws goop around.
To be fair the Koopalings have never been in a 3D Mario game. Always wanted to see them appear in a 3D game for once.
I'm guessing the koopalings didn't appear because their fight designs are so intrinsic to their character.

They would have been fine if they were a one thing thing, not the same fights all over again and the main focus.

I thought they were fine for the fodder mid-boss like enemies. I don't think they do need to come back because they filled their role as the "evil wedding planners" for Bowser's wedding.

The broodals were awful, they didn't have interesting designs or personalities.

Probably the most horribly designed villains in any Nintendo game. The boss fights themselves were just garbage too. They are one of the few blemishes on an otherwise great game.

Their music, battles and designs are all awful.

At least Boom Boom, Pom Pom and the Galaxy bosses had good music.

I remember the St. Patrick's Day bunny just cause of how weird that is but none of the others. Just use the Koopalings.

They are very "3D World" characters. I didn't care one bit.

Dunno what their japanese names were either. "Broodals" is really lame though.
