So I 100%ed every Kingdom with only the final challenge left. I want to farm coins to buy the remaining costumes before I get the final moon.
Is there a reward for maxing out the moons by continuing to buy them from shops? If there is, what is it?
I think I'll be done with this by the end of the week. What a ride! I'm a little sad it's over. I think I'll spend some time with a few Indie games before I move on to something bigger.
Still haven't played Steamworld Dig 2 or Golf Story.

Super Mario Odyssey is now the first 3D Mario game I've 100%'d (outside of buying some costumes).

Finally beat Darker Side. I was trying to do the flight skip but I couldn't stay high enough so I did the rest normally. I was at first really intimidated by the bird section but it's actually pretty easy. I got by the spiny section with 5 health left so I just zerg'd the 2D section since I knew I was getting health back. The Bowser section I ended up taking a lot of damage from because I wasn't used to his controls but I still got by it first try. The Moon music at the end felt really out of place. I'm at the end of the hardest level in the game and that felt weak compared to the rest of the levels music.

Also tried the harder Bowser fight afterwards. I heard people say they can't tell any differences from the normal one. There's a few differences but they're extremely small. He does extra tail swipes after every hit and I think the hats he throws go in a bit different directions but that's about it. I noticed 0 differences at all in the Bowser part.

I put pride in at most using the Talkatoo name hints to find moons, but I've come to the point where some of them are becoming a bit too obscure for me. Like when there's moons hanging around some random cliff edge that you have to ground pound or something, then I start looking up the exact quadrant it's in. I'm at 812 moons right now.

I'm in clean-up mode and the best is behind me, but the game truly is fantastic. GOTY, no contest.

Just beat. An absolute masterpiece. Only one massive omission
where the fuck is boo and/or a haunted kingdom
That probably stuck out the most, and the missed attempt at controlling a Koopa shell

My favorite is the Uproot (the stretchy onion dudes from Wooded Kingdom). So satisfying to bonk stuff with your onion head and do that little flip jump at the height of your stretch. It feels like a mechanic from some obscure Treasure platformer during the PlayStation and N64 era.

Now I want Capitan Todd with a capture mechanic...would make the puzzle levels sooo good...!

Just like Galaxy 2 was much better.. and Galaxy is better than Odyssey

Been in every mainline Mario. For a game that pretty much celebrates its history in many different ways, it was such a glaring omission that I'm sort of irrationally mad.

This, I believe, is why many are thinking it's due DLC. There are quite a few glaring omissions, including Shy Guys and pretty much anything from Sunshine!

Do you think cappy or at least the hat mecanics minus the capture will continue to exist after Odyssey ? I love the possibilities the hat mecanic add to mario moveset and i will be sad to see them gone in a next installment.

Hope they do something different like with every other Mario game
But I do hope we get an Odyssey 2

New worst moon contender for me.

It was previously the "Item floating in sky" thing. But this Wooded Kingdom art is now the new champion. I took a photo. Went straight to that red Sombrero Koopa. Even did the compass alignment. Nothing. Then I looked it up online and this fucking bush is all across the fucking map?

I know, right? I can't believe I didn't remember make this post myself. The artwork made it seem like you're supposed to find it at the walking mini-game area but it turns out that the distance between the koopa and the actual location was completely arbitrary.

EDIT: It doesn't help that most of the paintings usually give you information that can be observed in a single screen, but there's no real way to view the koopa and the moon's destination at the same time due to the distance and the dunes layout.

speaking of the art moons, quick question about the one in seaside kingdom

what are those three other hints supposed to mean? i just found the moon because i recognised the two pillars and they were very close to where you land. there was some pictures of the parrot and the telescope, but i never bothered to figure it out.

Some people said that Cap Kingdom was supposed to be this, and while they're kinda cute and spooky they are no replacement for them.

Glad to have been able to help! Have you found the one from the Moon Kingdom yet? I've just found it myself... working out which kingdom it's from it's really just about recognising the distinctive scenery of this area of the kingdom in question. Once you've established that, the scarecrow is key.
Remember that there are two types of situation where you'll find a scarecrow. The most common is the timed challenges, but there are also a few just designed to have you face a challenge without your cap - this is the latter.

Edit: I've just found the...
music list - the ability to choose which track plays as you're actively playing the game (rather than just while in a menu) is fantastic!

Presumably tracks just unlock when you first encounter them? I seem to be missing seven.

Oh my vague hint may have been too vague or I was totally on the wrong track.

when I said "moon" I was actually referring to the art that is a big circle and looks like it goes through the cycles of a moon. Ive been assuming it was cap kingdom but it's possible I've been on the wrong track. I've been assuming the C4 one is Sand kingdom also but maybe I'll start checking the other kingdoms for a C4 section

Edit: I found both in 5 minutes when I realized I was making the wrong assumptions about the kingdoms.

I haven't played a 3d console Mario game since 64. I guess I just didn't feel like I connected with platformers as much as I used to. Picked up Odyssey and I haven't put it down. Nintendo have really been killing it this year. I just finished getting all of the Moons from the Sand Kingdom that have named hints (Not using the 50 coins, but using the names since I don't have as much gaming time as I used to).

What a game. I'm disapointed in the motion control stuff, but it hasn't been that big of a problem. I'm probably going to grab a pro controller this weekend because with this Nintendo have fully sold me on the switch + HD TV. I was doing mostly handheld gaming with it before, but Odyssey is so beautiful.

Also first post, figured I'd make it about what is, surprisingly beating out a bunch of games for my favorite of the year in only a few hours.

Kind of agree with this, especially the end of the game which was awful and felt like i was playing sonic adventure but i think the main feeling that the game was rushed is due to the poor nature of how the player progresses.
They want you to rush through the kingdoms because post game a lot of extra and good moons get added to each kingdom but the problem is that players looking for a challenge would have already been looking hard for tougher challenges and therefore been all over each kingdom already.
They really should have just kept the harder moons in each kingdom to start with but made them completely optional so players that want a challenge before seeing all the kingdoms already have that option.

Super Mario Sunshine is a game that was rushed. And boy does it show. Wind Waker another one. Nintendo didn't need to tell us that content was cut to get the games out ASAP because from the drastically reduced number of worlds/dungeons with no adequate replacements other than the embarrassing blue coins in SMS it was all too evident. Albeit they did later admit it but that's beside the point.

I'd be flabbergasted if Nintendo do reveal that Super Mario Odyssey was rushed, and your argument that it was because you didn't like the final area(s) and felt that the pacing would've been better if some of the difficult moons were not locked until post-game doesn't scream to me 'rushed to release'.

Sorry i should more clearly state that i don't think the entire game was rushed just the very last few sections on the moon and with bowser.
But i do feel that the overall game might give the false impression that it was rushed due to the nature of the game pushing you quickly to reach the end.
There is clearly plenty of content in this game, it's just i feel that it's distribution was a little miss managed.
Still a better game than almost anything out this year and a improvement over 3Dworld but not reaching galaxy levels.

Man, all of the art moons in the
Moon Kingdom
are kind of a drag? Seems like busy work to visit each kingdom just to ground pound in a random spot. Still absolutely loving the game, but that's a little annoying.

That's funny - these were actually some of my favorite moons!

I think my favorite repeating missions were the "I Saw a _____" where you have to get an enemy to a character.

i use talkatoo and (if i can't intuitively determine the location using just that) uncle amiibo/toad but yeah, some of the moons are tricky

game is definitely incredible though. i want to say it's my GOTY as well, but breath of the wild gives it a run for its money

I like the idea. I feel like now that I have done all the moons but the final challenge (and coin grinding), I have a good idea as to what the optimal way to go about the game is.

To each their own, of course, but I'm glad I went straight for the ending and saved exploration for the post game. Where I screwed up was not doing the first part of the 250 moon challenge the moment it unlocked. I instead waited until I was 800+ in, so I was a little annoyed with myself.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did too. I'm about 650 moons in or so. Grabbing all of the art and being able to check those off as I was going back through the kingdoms would've been much less of a hassle.

Finished the game last night.... and I think the one part that brought the biggest smile to my face was when:

You took control of Bowser and when you diving down into his mind/conscience, you saw every version of Bowser dating back to the original Super Mario Bros.

Loving this game so far! Completed my first visit to the beach level last night and I'm gonna tackle the snow one tonight.

Question: without spoiling anything, can anyone tell me if there's a certain number of moons that I should collect before beating the game and, if so, what number should I be shooting for? Thanks!

There is no required number of moons and no number you should aim for just yet.
And if i were you i would just do the minimal main quests, head straight towards bowser and only collect moons if you happen to run into them, you will be coming back to finish up later on.

The moon level did feel a bit short. Something felt off there.

Spent 45+ hours on this game. Haven't touched it for three days after finishing it and I miss it very much.

Hope Nintendo announces new Kingdom DLC soon. I need more.

Cool, thanks!

And there's so damn many that I doubt I'll ever be able to find them all. I don't care about 100%ing stuff. I just care about having fun and playing games at my own pace. The game has been a joy to explore and I already got an unsolicited hint that more stuff "unlocks" after beating the final boss. So I'll probably continue to just do what I've been doing and then revisit each level post-credits to see what else I can find.

Credits rolled tonight. Great game with some very special worlds/moments. Has some problems, like missing challenge and reused bosses, but I love Cappy and hope this ain't the end of him.

I'm no completionist/fan of collectathons so this'll be it for me.

Around 650 moons now, I think. Game is at its best when you're just running around discovering stuff organically... when you take the completionist/checklist approach, it becomes a slog. Similar to BOTW in that respect, actually. Still having a great time with it, but I know there will be some things I come back to that will annoy the crap out of me. LOL

I have neglected Wooden Kingdom for most of my playthrough, but I am having such a blast there right now. The verticality is comparable to New Donk.
